Title: Best Memories & Moments With MK/DS/NHB Tours & Shows
Post by: regaran on May 09, 2019, 06:13:08 PM
As I started to be fade up with setlist discussion, I prefer to create a new topic with more positive feelings.
As this is the last tour of MK, It could be good to share our best moments or memories with all tours (DS, NHB, MK) and shows we have been.

Let's start with me. It was in 1992, at this time, I was living in Nantes, France. i was 16 years old, and i learned in newspaper that an additional date for on 'every street tour' has been Added in Nantes.
At this time, no mobile, so i was obliged to wait in the evenig to get authorization from my parents to go to the show. I got it, and was obliged to wait next day, and as internet was not existing, i had to go to music shops to buy a ticket. After school, i ran into music shops, but no tickets remaining, and finally at the last one, the guy from the shop said 'yes, i have 5 tickets remaining !'. 'I take one'. I went out of the shop, and it was one of my greatest joy to have this ticket in hand ! I was so happy !!! My only Dire Straits concert !!! On May 24th 1992, Dire Straits was in Nantes for the show and I still have the ticket as one of my biggest treasure !!!

Best moments of DS show (Glasgow 13.09.91):

PONO was the immediate highlight post-show.
In retrospect, getting to hear I Think I Love You Too Much and TOL is also special.

NHB (Glasgow '97):

Best version of Wild Theme and overall great gig with Mark in a very good mood.  Never heard him so relaxed or joke as much.

Knopfler solo:

Glasgow 2001:

Great show overall and met some lovely people at the venue back doors afterward, some still friends.  Oh, and we all got to meet Mark and some band members too!  Think they were a little tipsy!

Lucca 2010:

Special place, special venue (my only open-air concert) and special atmosphere.  Some memories of those few days I'll never forget like the old man on the train carrying a bottle of wine whom I saw hours later that same day on a bench seemingly awaiting the show starting!  Also the huge TV screens erected throughout the town because the World Cup was on at the time and the rather enthusiastic Dutch were in town turning Lucca orange!

Glasgow 2015:

Winning the competition to the meet and greet, although it didn't really live up to expectations if I'm being honest; only Ruth Moody performed backstage.  Now, now lads!  Show itself was a bit meh.

Special mention to the charity gig at Shepherd's Bush Empire, 23.07.02.  Great show, atmosphere, met some familiar faces and met John Illsley.

Special special mention to all those friendly AMITers I've met over the years at shows who have made the experience all the more enjoyable.

One of my best moments was similar to regaran's.   It was 1993 and I was shopping in Leeds city centre and as I was passing through the Merrion Centre (very close to the First Direct Arena, which wasn't built then) I saw someone pinning a poster on a wall advertising a charity gig at the Town and Country.   I ran over to the venue and was lucky enough to get two tickets.  I think I may have been one of the first.

It was an NHB concert, just prior to the Swan Hunter concert in Newcastle and I can't believe I heard two songs that had never been heard live before or since - Ticket to Heaven and How Long!

My next favourite memory was in 1996, also in Leeds and, again, at the Town and Country for the Golden Heart concert, which was one of the longest with an amazing set list.   Lots of other wonderful shows followed over the years, too many to mention.  I feel a very fortunate person to be a fan of such a great artist as MK.   :)

Another unforgettable moment was meeting MK in 2008 in Pilgrim Street, Newcastle!    :o

Certainly the whole concert from Basel  28.06.1992. The broadcast of this concert was something beautiful. First concert MK in Poland 10.06. 2001, but the list is longer

For me it has to be DS at Woburn Abbey in 92 as it was my first outdoor gig and one which is etched in my
mind forever. I’m so lucky I got to see them before they folded especially as I was only 16 at the time. The other is NHB in 97 at The Shepherds Bush Empire. MK was in his finest form and very chatty back then. Not like the moody guy I thought he was from his DS days.
Outside of gigs I’ll always kick myself for not saying hello when I ran into him at John Illsleys pub. Just didn’t want to be that crazy star struck fan he probably feels awkward with.

Unfortunately not. I sat in front of the TV on a beautiful Sunday evening.

I remember watching the version broadcast over here on Channel 4.  They cut CE to about 4 minutes long and never broadcast others at all like TR for example.  It wasn't until many years later I found the full concert.

It was a wonderful day and concert. I was recording on VHS tape :) I noticed that there is no concert on the internet

me three days after that, Werchter 1992.05.27, a holy day in my book. show itself was not particular, if i look at it now, but back then, i was smacked gobless.
then 1996, Rotterdam, i taped the "Mark for president" show at Ahoy, a fabulous show with one of my all time favourite songs, long highway, then 1999, Ronnie scotts, july 19th and 20th, standing in line outside this mini venue, with, amongst others, Marijn Schoo, also a member here, seeing a guy in a motorcycling suit and helmet walk past, go inside and only then realising it was mark. got a hand shake and a signature after the show. great shows! then the 2002 Beaulie show, too amazing for words, 2009, Hurlingham charity event, sitting next to none other but Pete Townsend, then, the many times in front row @Royal albert hall, and then and then and then...
THANK YOU MARK

Looks like April is my go-to MK month. Memories? Too many to write it all down...

2005 Tour — April 28 in Saint Petersburg, Russia
2008 Tour — April 26 in Saint Petersburg, Russia
2019 Tour — April 30 in Lisbon, Portugal

From 15 up to 29 half of my life is MK and his music. The best moment is probably when I first saw Mark on stage waving and playing Why Aye Man. It's the first time I saw him and what a perfect situation to get to know the artist. For half of the show I thought "I know all the songs, it's just I didn't know who wrote them all".

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

Nice topic - one that MK and Co may be happy to read - happy to contribute.

There are so many memories. Hard to choose only few of them but I'll make it brief to keep it interesting.

1) London 2002 : a fantastic gig, hope it'll happen again. Nice to see the soul of Dire Straits on stage again, and for me a revelation : Danny Cummings on the drums! I think I had never seen a drummer before… and I have never seen one since  8)

2) Lyon 96 (both nights) : my first MK shows so yes, very special for this reason, thus unforgettable. Great tour, great setlist (before the internet) and nice venue for an evening of July.

3) Barcelona 2008 : waited for a long time at the venue and had the chance to see the whole band. Danny is such a classy person that he took time for a chit-chat, for some pics and he offered me a present that I still cherish : one of his drum head, signed by him.

I'm gonna miss all of this tremendously -- as you all I guess -- so I'm trying to enjoy Mark and Co's last run as much as I can.

My overall favourite memory was the intimate charity show at Bridport, Dorset on the 27th September 2013 where we also took Ingridswing too....
What a fabulous little personal show culminating in meeting the man himself after the show and also gaining personally signed Fender MK Stratocaster labels for both of my Strats...I think shaking the Masters hand and him wishing me 'all the best' was the highlight of the 35+ years following him!!! Of course the signed items mean the world to me too...

Front row centre seats in front of MK for the second night at the RAH on the 28th May 2013 has to be seriously up there especially during 'The Bull Run' we just stepped forward right in front as he then striked up a fantastic rendition of BIA....
The intimate shows at Hay-on-Wye and Chalke Valley history festival are also breathtaking events I've enjoyed too...

Being at Forum in Copenhagen '96 and singing along to that epic "Ole ole ole" with the whole crowd. First concert ever and oh what a memory.

Meeting MK in Malmö, twice.

London, 2002, Save the baby-gig. "Almost" DS :)

Being backstage as a guest of Mr Sonny L's at St Julien 2015 and watching one legend's concert from the back of the stage alongside another legend.

Too many to mention for me, although not seeing him until Vancouver later this year. When that last song is played, whichever one it is, it will mean something special for me and there will be a tear in my eye! But the tears will be warm and will fall in a positive way. Seeing him around Europe both as the lead of DS and as the leader of his own crew over the year holds many memories. NHB at Ronnie Scotts in the 90's and being so close to the stage meant seeing his fingers dance and glide over the guitars just brought home what a special talent this man has and that he has been willing to share over the years is something special. But any concert, regardless of the setlist, when he walks out and takes that guitar in his hand you know you are going to witness something that means something to YOU personally and that is what I will miss. But ever so grateful for having witnessed what I have. Sigh! But as long as more music keeps coming, great!

I didn't get to see Dire Straits unfortunately, but I first got to see Mark in Bournemouth, 17th May 1996, but we got there late, and had to stand at the back, however we were directly in the middle of the stage, and the sound was great from where I was standing. I don't remember the set list but I remember being so nervous that I was finally going to see Mark live.

I had a great time seeing Mark on the Sailing to Philadelphia tour at The Royal Albert hall, it also my first visit there.

Another memory is being at the Brighton concert on the Get Lucky tour, that was the same gig that was used for the A Life in Songs documentary, I have tried looking for myself in the crowd, but can't see me, even though the camera is pointing my direction. If I remember correctly, that was the concert where Mark bought and presented Guy with a red Fender Strat, and accidently hit Danny on the head with it.

My other memory is from 2006, when I went to Newcastle for the first time, and it was to attend to Variety Club tribute lunch to Mark, and present him with the Silver Heart. Which was also my birthday, 19th October, so that was the best present ever, not many people can say they had lunch with Mark Knopfler on their birthday.  Also there were John Illsley, Jimmy Nail, Tim Healey, Alan Shearer, Peter Beardsley, although he had to leave early. But when I went to the bar for a drink, who was there too?only Mr Bruce Welch from The Shadows, I was star struck, but said hello to him, he shook my hand, and then heard some music starting, and hurried off saying "Is Mark about to play" I also remember Mark's mum being presented with a huge bouquet of flowers. I was sat at the table with other fans who bought tickets through MKNews, I don't know who they were, but they could be on this forum, if it was you, please let me know.

In my case, Badalona 2001. First time ever seeing the master, first row of course. Tears falling through my face at multiple times, no other artist has been even close to that.

Some shows later, I would pick Madrid 2019. Beautiful set, feeling kind of dizzy knowing that there probably won't be more opportunities to repeat this. Knopfler has always had a big place in my life,  with diverse grades of intensity, but he's been always there, from the first time listening Alchemy OUATW in my dad's car to this last beautiful show.

God bless you Mark.

Best memories are Billy Connely introducing at Wembley at Nelson Mandela Tribute. For me that is to date their best performance (and it's missing TR!)). Also my first DS show in Feyenoord Stadium in '92.

And that first time I got to officialy shoot him (no as an official concertphotographer, it's not what you think) in Amsterdam in 2010.

So many memories.....and then is my first RAH still to come

You guys have some amazing experiences!

Being on the other side of the world I have far less experiences,

However I did first see MK in 2005, it was a good show and i'll never forget hearing that guitar in person for the first time, surreal!

My highlight though was seeing MK in 2010 in Milan, I had been into other music for a few years and to be honest hadn't listened to MK a great deal for some time. I was travelling through and the show happened to be on as I was going through Italy, I thought why not and purchased some tickets. It was the best thing I ever did, It completely rekindled my love of MK and since I hadn't been following the tours (I still bought the albums) It was amazing to hear things like HFB and the arrangement of MT. The BR opening was absolutely excellent also. The weather was perfect, the venue was beautiful. never forget it! Hoping to catch another show this tour and say goodbye. Great thread!

Hamburg June 1996 Stadtpark Open Airs were both nights very special to me. The first one on Saturday in heavy rain throughout the show but a totally unexpected set with so many Dire Straits versions and 16 min Sultans. The second night in a warm summer Sunday night seemed to be second try but this time better. That was the first time I realized the set list thing, playing the same songs in the same order with even the same jokes. Never was much of a concert goer in general and had never thought about touring and setlist things. But we got A Night in Summer Long Ago which was cut the night before. Heard Long Highway the second time. I was literally on a high for weeks after those two shows. Also the sound on these shows was unbelievable good. At the second night last row seeing the soundboard guy reliving every note was something. I don't know how I got home after that,  totally in a trance.

First concert ever for me was Dire Straits Bremen 1991. When the curtain went away and Mark was really there I totally was in the tunnel. Different to many pictures he smiled more or less all the time  during the first four songs and he seemed to be such a small guy,  especially when he stood next to John. In my imagination he had to be bigger. He moved so much on stage which I also had not expected. I went to Munich during school holidays without a ticket only because of the chance to see him again and got lucky in buying one for Munich Olympiahalle 1991 after the show started outside the venue, although I missed Calling Elvis when I finally got into the hall. I got You and your friend and Tunnel of Love.

Bremen 1992 Open Air was a very huge impact. Together with that big stage and with around 10 friends (not fans, just friends who took the opportunity) and the lovely warm summer night it was an unforgettable experience.

All my shows from 2001 to 2010 were just ok compared to that in seeing back. I was searching for and wanting back the sensational feelings of the shows before but never got there again, although the fan and forum thing started, the albums were great and of course it was great to see him again every single time. It got also more of a habit to go to his shows. Generally, when the seated thing started, much of the magic was gone for me and it got more and more some sort of nostalgic thing. We knew we would never get what we really want and had arranged with his strange decisions in doing live touring programmes. Like disciples we never dared to leave him for that.

There is a big exception in the solo concerts however.
First and second  Night London 2013 was the best thing I ever experienced with MK, it was surreal and almost a outer body experience for me. Although having been in the RAH in 2010 before,  the magic of the building and Mark's presence totally made an outstanding momento for me which is not repeatable. It is also not recreatable with the recording which doesn't do it no justice at all. I never listen to the recording of my best MK concert. That made me learn and realize what it's all about. It's an experience. One experience. I do not any longer try to recreate that with repeated going to multiple shows. In 2015 Dublin, Hamburg and Munich were all disappointments.

One of the biggest impacts in my life with MK was not a live show but the first listening of the Sailing To Philadelphia album. I was at home from work for three weeks to recover from a pretty long medical surgery and was tired and somehow still under the influence of the narcotics all the time. Sounds funny but it had been my first time being anesthetized. I was not allowed to do very much so I listened to the album literally the whole day. I had been surprised by the release as I had not expected to hear from him anymore after the time gap since 1996. Internet only started in August 2000 for me when the first search I did was Mark Knopfler and the surprising info about the STP release turned up. When the album played for the first time it seemed every note and word went directly into my DNA and my brain and body forever. It was not about analyzing it track by track being critical about it being good or not. It was just a totally magic (again) and literally mind blowing experience, the complete 60 minutes of it. Never had that again. Often wondered if I would have loved the album the same when the medical thing had not happened before. One of the biggest MK moments for me, only comparable to May 1985, when with Brothers in Arms it all began when the vinyl suddenly turned up in our living room..

The first and Second nights at the RAH in 2013 were absolutely amazing and I agree with you wholeheartedly that these two evenings were most probably the best two concerts I also have witnessed LIVE......Mind you we had amazing seats for both evenings!! :wave

Just a thought - should this thread be moved to a more general position? It’s not especially about the current tour.

That was my first MK show too!!! 17th May 1996....

That's great that I wasn't the only one there that night. Look at that ticket price too ;) Brilliant value for money.

Still remember someone having the best moment in life when hacking the in ear monitor system in Cologne during the KTGC tour. That person must have been very happy with a non-usable recording. Best part is probably the fact that this person ruined my meet & greet with MK and band in Cologne which was cancelled just because of this hacking issue. :wave

Anyway, I received a signed tour book instead! :clap

My first experience was in 1992. I just had my exams from high school and the shows in Rotterdam were already sold out. But as a surprise my uncle had already tickets arranged without my knowing so the surpise was even bigger when he took me to Rotterdam and i could see the DS at De Kuip (Feyenoordstadium) in Rotterdam. I was blown away by the performance and the atmosphere. I was also happy that some of it ended up the official live cd.
After that tour i had the chance to see him on almost every solo tour. And every show had something special  for me. I am looking really forward to see him next month in Amsterdam although it will be my last one i will enjoy every single minute of the concert!!

Back stage meet'n'greet in city hall Newcastle 2008 for the Kill to get crimson tour with Dusty Valentino, Best Brown Baggies + his dad & Ubhal  :thumbsup :thumbsup

I'd love to have that experience all over again, MK playing guitar over Guys shoulder, 2 feet away from me was epic.

Think I met Super Val & Mr super Val in a Holiday Inn after the show as well - certainly met her in Dublin at some stage.

RIP Bradley Downes, a lovely brave young lad.

Yes, Waterline Man, we were part of a group for a pre-show drink and chat at the Travelodge!   That was a special time for me too - MK stopping the limo on Pilgrim Street to say hello and me being lost for words - unusual for me!  :smack   Mr Val managed a few words though!   ;D
