I guess this isn't the only showcase during the promo tour. In 2007 I won tickets for the amsterdam showcase therefore I did not subscribe for the London showcase on amazon. Now it's time for those fans who did not win tickets two years ago! Good luck everyone!!! :D

I hope some of these are broadcast. I know we moan about the lack of soundboard recordings from the KTGC, but on the other hand we really "got lucky" with all the great recordings of the promo tour. I was listening to Berlin the other day and it's fantastic.

Good point - but for me if i was to go to London then i would drive up - my car does a stupid amount of MPG - and i definately wouldnt stay afterwards - id drive home again....minimal cost - i could never justify

Bol.com in The Netherlands is also offering tickets to the promo gig in the Bush Hall London. If you win, hotel and flight to the gig are paid.
So I think this will be the only promo Mark is giving this year. Other years by this time you could win tickets for promo gigs all around Europe.

Thanks LE it is indeed a great Interview. Amazing also, in the fact that the interviewer used almost the same words I used to a small group of family and friends just yesterday. ie. "smart, literate grownups who can read without moving their lips", no matter what age group they come from. I also added that from my experience that a big percentage of his fans are people with higher than average levels of compasion and empathy for others, and that his music seems to find its way into the souls of these people. :)

This special concert should be for fans only, I doubt if there will be someone from this forum at that concert.

Well, that depends on what you (and MK) mean by "all". ;) My guess is that Jack Sonni, Hal Lindes, Pick Withers, David Knopfler, Mel Collins, Terry Williams, Mike Marnieri, Chris Whitten, Jeff Porcaro (RIP), Tommy Mandel, Randy Brecker, Mike Brecker (RIP) were not there. My guess is that he means Alan Clark, GF and maybe Chris White.

Hello,
Mark was in France today for Get Lucky promo. He was at the tv musical program "Taratata". A lot of French fans were waiting for him to be invited in this program where usually, artists are encouraged to express their creativity, make duets, covers etc. Mark has played a beautiful version of "Get Lucky" (John McCusker was excellent :D) and given an interview to Nagui (the presenter).
That's all about the French Promo :( the fans who attended were a bit deceived about just having one song. So bad Nagui didn't manage to make a good interview too, usually he's good at making feel the artist at ease but it seems Mark wasn't really in it.
Just seems Mark dislikes very much making promos, particularly in France... :'(

The recording of the tv show was yesterday evening but it will normally be broadcast within some weeks (I don't know exactly). David and I had one invitation that we could have used (only one). The problem is that David blocked his back two days ago with a lumbago and I didn't have the heart to leave him alone with our two little monsters jumping everywhere and breaking everything... lol
We will sure tape the show when it is broadcast ;)
That's it. But some of our spies attended the show and made us a review immediately ;) ;D

Nice interview, although you can tell MK isn't really comfortable doiung these things.
One thing though - even though it's just a year since I met him backstage at Newcastle, for the first time today I thought he looked old. :-\

Yes, I thought he looked a bit older, but he probably had been up very early and I agree, he isn't comfortable with these interviews. He was a wee bit political too, criticising the government on it's treatment of war veterans and rightly so imo! ;)

Yes, that was interesting. In years past he would never have been political, but he was political in that German guitar interview last year too.

An interesting bit is where he mentioned why he created the sound for the opening of 'Down To The Waterline' from the 1st DS album.
He wanted to try and re-create the sound of the horns from the boats that he used to hear in the morning from his house.
I'm sure i've never heard this comment before, although i'm sure someone here will correct me. ;)
A very brief interview as well i thought, with only a very small clip of music.
And if you watch up until the very last minute, he was very eager to leave the studio, getting up as soon as the interview was over.
Always GREAT to see him live on the box though. :)

I've heard the foghorn remark before - can't remember where or when, perhaps someone can jog my memory. The reason I remember it is because I grew up in a similar place (close to the river) in Liverpool and I used to listen to the foghorns on dark foggy mornings too! I remember when I first heard Mark mention the foghorns, that I had something in common with him! :)

Just played it back on my computer and he looked much younger! Must be my television! LOL Personally, I don't think these interviewers know anything much about MK. It sounded like he was ONLY appearing at the RAH and didn't mention anywhere else. They could have mentioned that he had just last week played the Princes Trust concert for charity for example - but no, typical BBC! :-\

You can see why Mark hates doing these sort of things. You almost cringe when you hear the presenter asking the same stupid questions, although i suppose they are only doing their job.

I think it was a very nice interview. The story behind Remembrance Day was touching when he says that everywhere in Europe you see those "name roles"
and that hardly a family was not touched by wars. And the cricket team thing is also very interesting. A great song.

Some news about the french TV show Taratata where MK has played "Get Lucky" + a short interview.
The whole show will be broadcasted 07/10 at 20h35 (Paris time) on channel France 4.
Of course I will record it (sat) ;)

Mistake here? I thought it was Ndr2, and I know the show "radiokonzert". They used to send complete shows in the last years (Hamburg 2001, or with

Mark Knopfler (smiles): conceivable bad. I did not need the money. I've had enough.
STEREO: And musically would not irritate you that?
MK: Yes. I want that size anymore. I do not know much about rock stars or pop music in general. You can believe me that it was never my goal to permanently run on MTV. I myself am also not dealing with pop music, I look better on television sports and news. I'm afraid I'm just too old for this world.
STEREO: Is it hard to please you, in the 80s with songs like "Money for Nothing" or "Walk Of Life" are so much in the center and Star to be?
MK: You have to get used to it eventually. I mean, it's great to be successful, and I had great fun with the band. But I did it all before too large a number, what happened to us. I had to get myself and my world once more under control. That I succeeded, and now I have again the degree of encouragement, when I feel well myself. I write songs, they always take and sell enough cards to play in lovely big warehouses to be. What do I want? I feel the wonderful process of controlling this little ship. It's fun, with the frigate on the road. The big cruiser, I have to drive anymore.
STEREO: You were pioneers, as far as music videos. And you also have a big contribution to make CDs with your popularize the 1985 album "Money for Nothing". Now, CDs and videos are disappearing. Makes you sad?
MK: No, not at all. Should they disappear after all. Then just enter something new in their place. And besides, I'm not one of these audio freaks. Clearly, in the studio, I hear the whole sound picture in perfect style. But I'm not worried if the plate is now one of many on the computer. If the people do that yet. And if they have a good investment, then "Get Lucky will" also be happy to hear there. I feel the same. I have always used my music heard on a cheap cassette player and was happy.
STEREO: Funny, when you consider that many people buy expensive audio equipment for your music.
MK: Could be. If your passion is fun, then let them do so. But the others did not miss much. Ultimately, it's the same with movies. You need not see in the movies. But it is better.
STEREO: What was your approach to this
Album?
MK: The approach, which as you call it, is always the same: I compose songs and I see that I will include them. And I always hope that a good album comes of it. What is not so simple. Sometimes I manage only one or the other song, but for a good record is not always enough. Nevertheless, I continue to try to brave ...
STEREO: So are you not satisfied with all of your albums?
MK: I can not answer at all. Because I do not look back. What is done, it is ready. When I finish an album, then I listen to the songs for so long no more, until it is time some of them rehearsing for the tour.
STEREO: That sounds almost as if you'd be indifferent to your own songs?
MK: No, that's harsh, I do not see it. For me, those songs are like children. When I recorded them, and almost raised, they leave the house. Just as children. You then have a private life. And I know it very much appreciate that they seem a lot of people mean very much.
STEREO: Surprised you that?
MK: Yes, very. Although I find it very nice that cause my songs to people well-being. Apparently, they help many hard working people live and rest. Or they use them to celebrate. To sound for weddings, funerals, parties or cozy dinner.
STEREO: Do you want to "Get Lucky" status, that people feel when listening to?
MK: I am currently in negotiations with the British Ministry of Health, the panel may wish to prescribe prescription (laughs). But seriously: I would like anyone claiming to how he should deal with my music. I can only say that it has been lovingly recorded phonetically. I feel fortunate that I have my own studio and me there after my pace and can devote my taste in music. I know that most musicians do not have that luxury. And before I knew it another way, when after a few weeks to be thrown out. Long recording periods are my greatest pleasure.
STEREO: You Pushed and work under one roof?
MK: Yes. From the house to the studio, I'm going for a quarter of a motorcycle.
STEREO: You're just turned 60, you are glad you?
MK: Yeah. I feel healthy and fairly young. But I also fit in that I stay in shape. That means I'm more and more sports and more and more sports to keep the shape. I run, play tennis, do weight training, I'm fit.

However, Jeroen where did you find the EPK? Any chance to have a dvd copy with the higher quality as possible? I like to collect the EPKS, the only one I have with bad quality is the Golden Heart one, cause as far as I know, there is only a copy from a tv broadcast with subtitles :(

We have managed to save this clip in .flv format. You need to play the clip completely and then search for *.flv files. the one you want is "GetLuckyEPK.flv" You need to search hidden files or Windows will not find it. Then move it somewhere safe!

For what I know this only works on windows XP and not anymore on VISTA. When you play a file that particular file is located in the Temporary Files at your pc. You can find it in the IE options.

it is easy to install free Grab Pro plugin for FireFox. Also I can recommend WM Recorder (price for about $30) it works fine with IE, but does not work with FireFox.

My RealPlayer has a great new option to get easily videos from different locations - youtube...etc.
It appears a little button for downloading just above the right corner of the video window.

I have the same. it contains a h.263 Sorenson codec video with bitrate 1015 Kbps and Mp3 96 Kbps sound. Not too bad , better than VHS :-)

Ustas - The Cleaning my gun video made it onto the DVD, but it's hard to believe they left the EPK off. There is plenty of room for it on the DVD, which is only 1.59 gig.
Mark is a perfectionist and he deserves better than the ramshackle way the record companies have dealt with this release. ???

I cannot, it was possible to record it with my previous nootbook with XP, I had one way with BBC iPlayer only - to catch and record audio stream from soundcard by Windows Encoder 9.0 (it is free software and available at MS website) It looked like classic tape record. But now Windows encoder does not see soundcard on my new nootebook with Vista...

I've tried and failed recording iPlayer before. Only way I could do it would be to hook up my MD, which isn't working. :-\

Anyway, why wasn't anyone from the 'official' homepages able to announce the interview MK will be doing at wdr2 today? Don't know much about it, because I couldn't hear it - but the interview was broadcasted about an hour ago as a friend told me. So I don't know if it was aired live or recorded before. Sadly, there is no podcast or something like that available at wdr2.

For sure i recorded it. With phonestar 128 kbit. Could be better. But not bad...
Hmmm... I am not quite sure now but i think it was some kind of disappointing for me...
The first part was awesome. McCusker! F.e. both slower parts in WAM and WII. And i still like that "new beginning" in TLWNF.
Another nice positive things were the background vocals and the good sound.
The second part was not what i would write on my wishlist. Don't get me wrong. I like Why worry and Monteleone but i prefer other songs.
Song for Sonny is not my favorite, too. I assume If this is goodbye was good :) For the last two songs: There are other versions of the songs i like more.

Thanks for uploading! I'm listening right now after a long day. Everything sounds great but John McCusker... He's simply THE MAN. He takes all those songs to another dimension. He became a very important player in Mark's line up, I would say he has the same significance now as Chris White or Paul Franklin used to have in DS days. Great musician.

Pity the WDR2 gig was announced at such a short notice. Also, I can't just sit in front of my satellite receiver and listen to the radio all day long :-\ Would have loved to go there. But AMIT was represented, that's the important thing :)

I had no chance of meeting Mk or the band before or after the concert. I asked some of the WDR people if there is any chance that MK signs my pickguard. But they told me that MK even did not sign all the stuff they wanted to give away in a new competition. Maybe next year.

Redbeard: I was going to ask you about your thoughts of Michael Jackson and his career and his passing. Because you and I had talked at length about how you observed Elvis Presley, not only as a kid, but then as a professional musician.
Mark Knopfler: Well, it's just, they're just beautiful young people that get involved in the music business as well as they are getting involved in music. Ya know when you're getting involved in music, that's all very well, but you have to get involved in the music business too and they're two separate things. As Elvis found out. And of course with Elvis as well there was the movie business, and the movies that he loved. And the music, movie business which I'm sure he was kept at arms length from. And so when you get a beautiful young person who can sing and dance at the same time, which is a clever trick if you can do it, it's going to cause a little bit of a fuss, and especially when they're so young as Michael Jackson was. But then ya know when kids are de ified, and when kids are worshiped, it's not a healthy thing and it leaves its mark on any kid that's been worshiped, mass worshipped that way. Not worshipped by parents, ya know, which of course all children should be, but kids that have been involved in all this mess, ya know they're either movie stars, child stars, child singers, or child actors . there's always a price.

I am SOOOO happy MK is not doing Regis! Regis wouldn't know what to ask ("uh, so, you're still playing?"), and Kelly is a teribble flirt and her very voice gives me indigestion. And of course with Letterman in such a deep @#$%, that's out as well. Too bad for the tri-state area. Sorry to say, GL got no promotion here, none at all!! And still the CD was flying off the shelf!

Jay Leno has this fun little race track silliness going on. I wish that his people and Mark's people would get together and plan something for when MK is in LA next spring. It would be memorable to see MK sitting in the guest spot there, not just playing--then hitting that race track.

It was made for Newsweek Poland by a Polish reporter Robert Ziebinski. Some of Mark's sophisticated language might have got lost in the translation both ways, but nevertheless - you get the idea.

Dusty, yes, there were several cameramen filming, according to some aud cam videos I watched. But who knows if they filmed the whole performance of the song and if the one who did the edit work was willing to put the song complete and broadcast it. :-[

That was a nice little report. Very refreshing NOT to see the usual "I used this guitar for that..." / "I didn't have the nerve to ask my dad for an amplifier" kind of thing. Yes the Straits references were a little annoying but I guess it's mandatory for any programme about MK.

Hehe... It has nothing to do with English skills, I think it's because they don't think it's necessary to add English subtitles to a programme that's only on German TV (or French TV). How are they supposed to know there are quite a few hardcore fans from all over the world eager to watch every MK interview :)
BTW I was indeed a little annoyed by the Parisians' lacking English skills. I do understand some French but they can't expect us silly tourists to speak French fluently :'( Do I have to take this personally or is it just a cultural thing? I felt a little retarded.

I think what Nelly meant is that she would have liked German subtitles instead of the voice over, so we could have heard Mark's voice.
And you shouldn't take it personnally, French people can be very arrogant (and lazy) when it comes to languages. (of course there are exceptions, Nelly, me and, eeeeerrr, that's it! ;D)
