Post by: Dutchessy on September 01, 2009, 05:49:54 PM
PRE-ORDER GET LUCKY
MarkKnopfler.com is pleased to offer Mark's new album to pre-order, starting today. Visit the Store to get your copy. Get Lucky comes out on September 14 in Europe and September 15 in North America.

As a special bonus to all CD buyers (outside of the US), we'll be launching a special section of MarkKnopfler.com in September just for you. So pre-order your copy today, and stay tuned for further details on the new section.

What should it be?? Special section... Maybe you can download there bonus songs like 'early bird'

I was thinking about placing my order, too.
But:
I am from Germany. it says Shipping 3 to 5 weeks. When does Shipping start? I mean do I have to wait on to five weeks from Sept. 14th??? Or are
they busy trying to hit that release date? I want my DVD not in November....

Has anybody some experience with ordering CD

I am not going to order my copy from MK.com. Why should I? Oh wait... Maybe you get access to a super-secret ticket presale site with options to get seats in row one for a concert of your choice... Or it's just a silly dice you'll get ;D And then the site will crash down and everyone will be able to see your credit card number before the bug is fixed and then... Okay, I'll stop now.

Well, I made my decision,: After having cancelled the Deluxe Box at amazon a few days ago I ordered the CD/DVD-Edition at MK.com. Now I got mail that on release day,
Sept. 14th, I will get another mail:     *

Purchase of the CD gives you access to a special bonus section of MarkKnopfler.com. An access code to this section will be emailed to you on September 14, 2009.

Alone my curiosity is responsible for this decision. Also the price: I ordered the CD/DVD-Edition for 12,49

On the old site, they had a VIP section that you had to register to get into, and I swore they told you something very similar...such as:

When I put the CD in the drive and want to validate my GL copy, it says that it's not valid!
No bonus section on mk.com
No Early Bird on french Itunes
No Time in The Sun on french amazon
All this gets on my nerves.
They could have kept the casino chips for themselves at the record company and put the 2 songs on the bonus CD!
Very disppointed by the marketing strategy! Universal music is only here to make money....

Here's another gullible fan who pre-ordered and got that mail about the bonus section. And since that, nothing.

So as a little heads up I'm bringing the contact info for the guys behind markknopfler.com since the "store" refuses to reply  ;D
Time for a phone call then?

Hi! welcome!  They did reply to my email, quite quickly even:

The bonus section is available to all buyers of the CD (outside of the US). There was a delay in getting the site up yesterday, and I'll be sending out the access codes today.

I said I wanted a refund because it was misleading and I got another quick answer:
I'm sorry if that's the impression you got, but what we said in the newsletter was "As a special bonus to all CD buyers (outside of the US), we'll be launching a special section of MarkKnopfler.com in September just for you." It's slightly different on the site, but does say "As a special bonus to UK and MarkKnopfler.com CD buyers".

Unfortunately, the CDs have already shipped.

Hi all,

What's behind the special bonus site ? Well that site is strange, it says that Opera and Chrome web browsers are not supported.
Bad impression as a beginning...
So I have tried with Internet Explorer (I hate that one), wow this time I've got tons of log/debug popups. Great progress !  :-\
Is this site still under construction ? Or is it such a very special section that needs lots of controls to access the graal ?  :o
Finally I have the page : all that for a small plugin that controls the CD inserted in the drive and it returns to a simple page on the mk.com website : http://www.markknopfler.com/bonus/default.aspx (http://www.markknopfler.com/bonus/default.aspx)

Guess what, I have then copied the page link to my other browsers then and it appears with no problem (I was logged in). I guess the plugin in IE has written in the database that my CD has been approved so now no need of the plugin anymore.

So you have to use IE or Firefox first, but if you prefer another browser (Opera, Chrome or Safari) you can use them back after the identification of your CD copy.

A chance to win the Deluxe box ? I already have it. D'Addario strings, woow... no thanks.
Meet'n'greet, sounds much better for me as I have not seen one yet  :P
A signed Fender, hmmm why not but I would prefer a signed National  ;D

Regards
David

Is it just me ( ;D ) who thinks that the plugin might result in a serious security issue? Maybe I'm old-fashioned but I become leery when it comes to installing plugins (or rootkits....) made by the music industry. Did you check your firewall afterwards?

On September 17th I sent this e-mail to mk.com, not really surprised I had no answer till now  >:(

Dear all,

I am a little disappointed by the bonussite.
I ordered a copy of Get Lucky at your site as well. After also ordering the boxset and digipack at my local shop, also buyed the normal CD at a dutch website and decided to buy another normal CD at your website because of the bonussite. Yes I know have 4 CD's, a couple of DVD's and some other content from the boxset.

Your bonussite says I automatically entered a contest to win guitarstrings, I don't have a guitar. So not a bonus to me.

And later:

I will be able to visit Guy's diary, I already read it for years! So also not a bonus to me.

I will be able to win the boxset, I already bought one. So not a bonus.

I will be able to win a MK Stratocaster. Ok, nice if I win, I don't play but nice collectorsitem, but not much chance to win that.

I will be able to win a meet&greet. That's a bonus, but not much chance I think.

Till now no bonus on your site, I really expected something immediately, like a nice download or something.

From a disappointed fan in the Netherlands, who is a fan from 1978. I went to all the gigs, starting in 1985 (because of age not allowed by my parents to go in earlier years). I am doing more than one concert every tour, 2008 was 14 times, I already ordered 7 gigs this time, but Switzerland, France and Germany are not announced yet, so it will be around the same amount as 2008.

I hope it will be a real bonussite in short time.

Best regards,
Ingrid van de Maat, Netherlands

And also look at this :

By signing up to the MarkKnopfler.com Bonus Site, you have automatically been entered to win one of #TBD sets of D'Addario guitar strings. Winners will be announced on date TBD, so check back to see if you "got lucky".

So winners will be announced, but when?? And they have .... sets to give away??

The question said:
"What kind of animal was named after Mark in 2001?"
The key word here is "animal" so I would think the correct answer is dinosaur.  They didn't ask what kind of dinosaur, did they?  I agree the question isn't very well thought out.

This was my answer to that question  :

"The Masiakasaurus knopfleri (a species of dinosaur)"

I can't be more complete I think.

Mark's OBE was 1999 I believe and offcourse The 96ers as backing band.

A multiple choice type set of questions would probably been better.  Can you imagine the final one:

What is the nickname of Mark's current band:
a) the '95ers
b) the '96ers
c) the '97ers

I know sometimes they can be quite patronising for the hard core fans such as ourselves but we should be understanding that not everyone would know this.

they should be called the 08ers ( Matt & Danny are in the band since 2005 and John since 2008... btw I love them)

I miss Chad (when you listen to the boots with him on drums, in comparation, Chad was a far better drummer), but Matt Rollings is a very good keyboard player (even better than Jim that was a genius, and obviously far far far better that Geraint "Uncle Fester Adams" Watkins) and the addition of John McCusker is absolutly great.

I think this is the best band MK ever had, althought the 96ers could be applied as Richard, Glenn, Matt, Guy and Danny were involved in the GH record from 1996  ;D

Very interesting stuff you say here because personally I didn't like Chad at all and as for Jim Cox, well I did have great admiration for him but he really was a jazz pianist and his style didn't suit the music of MK in my opinion, especially his extented solo on sultans.  John McCusker is perhaps being overused these days, "just shove a cittern on this song so you're not doing nothing," and I hate the sound of that damned cittern.  Also, how come John Illsley was the only one who can play bass on sultans properly?  Glenn Worf goes on and plays his own wee tune towards the end.  Makes it just too complex by far.  Excluding these minor gripes, I'm pretty happy the way things are right now with the band! :)
Title: Re: Bonus section MK.com now available!

Well, John does play other instruments beside the cittern (which btw I love), like fiddle, Scottish flute and whistle, so there's not much chance of him standing around twiddling his thumbs, is there!  Actually, I think the cittern, on tour, elevated "TLWNF" from being just a very nice song to something wonderful and it was one of my favourites.   I think the band is pretty OK at the moment, probably the best solo line-up.   :)

Fair enough if you like it's sound but I just think it's got a horrid sharp tone that sounds the same all the time on every tune and quickly becomes tiresome.  I think it ruined TR on the last tour - there was simply no place for it there and it took away one of MK's solo's. :(

The only thing that will elevate TLWNF for me is the mute button - a very average song to be polite! ;)

You are probably the only one (or one of the few) thinking that but hey, we're all different! (and that's a good thing!).

Oh no, don't get me wrong I think JMcC is an integral part of the band but not on almost every song.  There is a place for his great musicianship in certain songs, I just think he is being overused.  It's like they're deciding "oh we'll just shove a cittern on this tune so you have something to do!"  The damn thing's popping up everywhere - I'm going to start having nightmares about it! ;D

Actually yeah I think it is true,You can have an example at "What It Is" on the WDR Radio gig a few days ago,You can hardly hear the MK solos in that one because the fiddle is playing the lead parts.John McCusker surely is a great musician and it is a must for the MK's band line up but not necessarily in some songs as it is actually ruining the feel of it.

No, I am not saying he is being overused,I always liked him and he really gives a good sound to the songs especially during the 2008 tour but I don't like the way MK's guitar parts are being somehow replaced with other instruments these last few gigs.I mean we are all here for MK and his guitar, the band plays a very important role in the songs but it is not a good idea to change the way some songs are played as it really means a lot to some people, maybe Mark himself wants to rest from playing guitar that much and letting some more room for other instruments but in my opinion it is a bad idea.I hope "what it is" won't ever be played like that again.

Hmm, I still miss Jim's piano part during sultans of swing. Without this beautiful part, the whole song could be skipped in my opinion. :-\ Back on topic (? :P ) John is a great musician. He can make the folk sound in the band come alive. Especially WII, STP, SAN, Marbletown, TR sounded better during the last tour (compared to previous tours in my opinion). Nothing beats a real instrument, even an expensive synth can't do the job. :P

No, no, no!! :o  Cannot disagree with you more!  Jim took a great liberty with his piano solo on Sultans and sent most of the audience to sleep.  It's okay to do solo's like that in a small jazz club but when you have about 10,000 fans patiently awaiting the final solo it's just not appropriate.
John is a great musician.  Fact.  One cannot argue a fact.
TR on the last tour must surely have been the worst versions by some distance and not just because of John's cittern but Mark never broke sweat on his solo's either (those he decided not to omit that is).
Sorry mate, it would be a funny world if we all liked the same things!

I like the individual touches that different band members add to the songs.   That's one of the reasons I collect--to listen to all those obvious or subtle or somewhere inbetween bits of newness and variety.
It does seem to me that MK is giving JMcM a lot of play time.    But I love it.   He gives the music a whole new sound, which is great, imo.   That doesn't mean that what went before is not enough.   Damn, I hate double negatives.     What went before is all part of the MK sound--so is what's being played now.   It's all wonderful.  I still have my likes and 'not so likes' of the tracks, but the combinations of musicians work for me very well.     Take Marbletown.  For me, it was just a track on the RPD cd, but played in concert with that tremendous string trio, it becomes unforgettable.    :)

I really loved TR on the last tour, especially from Red Rocks and Charlotte (I still listen to it a lot), but it was just another example of how Mark can adapt a song to fit in with other members of the band.   Of, course I still adore the previous version too!    Marbletown, WII, Speedway and STP, all benefited greatly from John's musicianship on the last tour imo.

You're quite right though, dmg, it would be strange and dull if we all liked the same thing!    ;)

Interesting that you should mention Red Rocks, SuperVal, as that was one of the shows which John McCusker missed due to problems with his visa.

I too enjoy John's contributions to Mark's music, both on record and live. His style really fits with the direction Mark has chosen the past few years. He also provides a bit of welcome animation on stage. As wonderful as the rest of the band are, they are not the most demonstrative of performers, so John's bobbing around as he plays provides a little bit of extra entertainment.

Fenderbender - Yes, even though John is not on the Red Rocks concert, it is one of my favourites of the 2008 tour. The Charlotte gig was with John's cittern and I liked it equally as much.  Both TR's (Red Rocks and Charlotte) have the same basic arrangement, and both work well, for me anyway!   :)

The problem on TR in 2008 is that Mark switched to electric too far in the song. If you listen to the studio version you can hear that both the National and the electric are played all along. But as there is only one Mark on stage, the part featuring the National is only the  intro excepted in 1991/1992 where Chris and Paul plays some Mark's part with great result. But in 2008 the National part was even longer and Richard also took some part usually devoted to Mark. Although an excellent guitar player, he sounded was way too weak on that - and generally speaking I found Richard buried in the mix (SAN for example). He plays too low, if you remember 2005 he plays very nice early line on The Mist Covered Mountains but to hear them properly you had to be standing just in front of his amp.

The National on the album version does make it sound nice but the cittern sure doesn't sound like MK's National.  The best TR has sounded live was when MK changed to electric after the intro just before the lyrics start without any doubt in my opinion like during the GH, STP and SL tours.

For me the GH tour come first. STP version was not memorable with Geraint and on the SL tour I biased myself with  the "why he keep that one and do not play TOL instead" syndroma. The final solo on the Pensa is still blistering but this is the first 10 minutes that bores me.

Yes, if MK feels that he has to mess around with the arrangement of TR to avoid getting bored with it to such an extent then it annoys me too that he doesn't play TOL especially when he knows it will please so many of the fans but I guess it's something we just have to accept now.  I always find it interesting to note that it's never been played since Alan Clark left the band and his piano was stunning on that song but surely Matt could do it.  This has all been discussed many times though and at the end of the day we don't know why it's not played any more and it probably won't be again sadly. :'(

Although I have not big hope about it, I have no clue if it will or not be played again. After all who had bet that HFB would make the 2008 tour or that Mark would have a try with "The Man'sToo Strong". What event in his life can make him change his mind and think "TOL is fun to play again and the public will love it"  ;D

I have no doubt that Matt could take the seat with great result as he already do it on R&J and TR. Or next time, Mark should take Roy Bittan and Benmont Tench in the band.

On John, I agree he's a good and worthy addition to the band, but he is a bit redundant on some songs. The cittern really added to True Love Will Never Fade, but was pretty pointless on Telegraph Road, So Far Away, Shangri La and Going Home. At least when Chris White was there they accepted that he didn't have to play his main instrument on EVERY song, would be better if JM took a leaf out of his book and did some percussion or went and had a fag or something.
