Title: Going Home vs Wild Theme
Post by: Dwf2008 on September 23, 2020, 10:13:26 AM
This may be a dumb question but could someone tell me the story behind the naming of these two tunes? I know they are from the movie Local Hero which I enjoyed but how is it there are two names for what seems to be the same song?

It is related to the movie, to the scene of the movie where you can listen the song. Usually the music score songs titles are related to the film, and to the scenes.

Yes, and the difference usually being "Wild Theme" is a stripped-down version of the melody, maybe acoustic, with a piano, and Going Home is the epic 80s style in your face rocker with the saxophone, usually with a long "quiet before the storm" type of introduction.

So, I’m not going crazy? They ARE just different versions of the same song?

Many of the tracks from Local Hero are variations on the same basic theme including the 2 you referenced.

Its also there in  The Ceildihd and the northern lights, Whistle theme (Obviously), and parts of Smooching.

Its actually a really good example of the use of themes in musical works, I use it quite a bit with students in the classroom.

The Rocks And The Thunder It is twice the same version :)

I don't know of any other album that has the same track twice :)

Yes, but as a piece of music, encore of OTN and the original Going Home on the offical CD is the same song, but with a different arrangement. So, from that point of view you could state WT “has never been played live”, only GH. BUT: GH was played in various arrangements, with arrangements that closely match WT and the original one. ;)

yes but to be accurate, the live version of wild theme include the intro of going home, while the studio version of wild theme doesn't have it

Let's discuss why it's called Wild anyway. Whistle Theme is quite obvious, so Wild should be equally obvious? What so wild was happening in the movie that this is the "Wild" theme? As I recall it was playing while the main character was drifting away from Penn on a helicopter. Also I remember it ends very abruptly.

Basically all clips above are GH, but some of them with an arrangement that very closely matches WT. I never understood why it was called Local Hero/Wild theme on SOS the very best of as it’s the same intro and melody of GH. Something that is slightly different in wild theme which is floatig around the melody more or less. :think

But hey, it’s a beautiful song anyway! No matter if it’s wild or not. ;D

in the studio version, wild theme starts immediately on the melody
in live versions, wild theme starts with the GH intro

wilf theme is played several times while seing beautiful landscapes : the "wild nature"  I guess this is why it's called wild theme
