Title: AMIT - members meet up in 2023 thoughts
Post by: Knopflerfan on June 26, 2021, 01:27:14 AM
As we ease out of the Covid Pandemic (slowly) and thoughts/discussions of late have focused on the fact that MK may never tour again. I am wondering what the general consensus would be on holding an AMIT meet-up/convention somewhere?

My thoughts would be to hold them at a central location where 'everyone' has a chance of attending. How great it would be to get a date in the diary and have a focus where we all may meet up again.

Perhaps the venue could be more of a function room(s) as opposed to a boozer! that way we could hold an 'AMIT Convention' where we have DS/MK music being played, refreshments laid on, exchange/sell MK items, have MK memorabilia on show etc
I'm probably getting carried away but I would just like to float the idea and to get chatting amongst ourselves..... :wave :wave

Sounds excellent!    How about inviting Mark and Guy (Mr Val's idea)?    Wouldn't it be wonderful and we could just talk and chat - they don't even have to play anything!    ;D

Yes, indeed - especially as it is only a stones throw away from where I live,  although I should think it will be very pricey to hire!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D

During the last tour, I talked with my usual gang that, once the MK touring is really over, we should do one trip per year around something MK related... we have ideas for places like the Spanish City in Whitley Bay, Robin Hood Bay and attend a Steve Phillips gig, going to Pennan and do some Local Hero related trips... lots of ideas.

We did one travel some years to the New Forest and visiting John's pub (and sleeping there) and that was so great that looked a good idea to keep doing that travels in the future.

Whitely Bay would be lovely to visit.  The weather was so miserable when I was there before I didn't even get out of the car!

A gang of people walking around a place like Pennan might get a few weird looks!

Evening all, I've just had an amazing conversation with ingridswing after a few years and that has coincided with us both chatting about looking to sort a possible AMIT meet up next year (2023)

We are both sure and subsequently resigned to the fact that MK will sadly not be touring next year and so we both are looking for meetup's at a venue in possibly London or Newcastle maybe even Edinburgh (to be decided) in May/June 2023....

Proposed dates: Friday 16th - Sunday 18th June or Friday 14th - Saturday 16th July 2023

Location/date Poll is here:

https://www.amarkintime.org/forum/index.php?topic=8245.0

I'd like to throw comments open to the rest of the AMIT community with ideas for places to meet etc

I am in! Such a good idea from Knopflerfan.
I think London is easy to reach, and pretty cheap planetickets, but hotels are so expensive.

Newcastle has a lot of memories, we can do a MK-walk through the city, I believe we have a writer who can organize that ;-)
Hotels are cheaper and so are drinks and meals.

Can you please respond to this? I hope there are a lot people who like it as well.
Please share (un)possible dates, ideas etc.'Then Knopflerfan and I are going to sort it out.

I hope to meet a lot of fans! Please share this with your friends who are not on AMIT or who dont respond because there is no real news around and they don't login

I agree about London prices and Newcastle has so many good locations maybe that could be the place to go???

Hi all, if you want to join, please go to the poll. There you can vote for location and 3 weekends.
You can vote maximum 2 days, in case you have the possibility to be able to attend on 2 weekends.

Thank you all for this lovely idea.
Would it be a good idea to wait with a decision on the date for maybe another month?
By then maybe the idea of bringing the Local Hero musical to other places in 2023 could have been released (after the Chichester production is over).
Maybe some of us would love to combine a trip to the UK in 2023 with an evening of MK's LH music.

That's a great idea, and in fact is the reason why I didn't join this yet, because I hope that next year could be the LHM year in London, and save the trip for that!

No, we are not, but it is on their plans.

Well what I suggest is to anyone who may want to attend LHM in London to provisionally fill in the 'Back in the day' meet up date poll for now and IF the dates are released we can reassess the meet up dates to fit in with whatever LHM dates are released...

That way we get a rough idea of numbers who wish to attend the meet up...

You may be joking but it is not impossible (or was). My current boss once told me he was in England with his family and besides doing things together they also decided to make things happend for themselves. He had signed up for "VIP music value coupons" as he recalls, and British Grove Studios was one of them. He went there but he had no idea who the owner was. He went there because of it being a cool studio, and actually saw Mr. Knopfler but only briefly. Then they had a tour of the place.
He was told that they stopped these tours later on.

Many hotels have business suites for hire these days for presentations, meetings etc.  We could perhaps hire one of these and have a swap meet for bootlegs and other memorabilia.  It would be nice to meet in a room setting like that too instead of our usual pub setting when we usually congregate around tables and miss out on seeing others.  Could have some music on and lay on some sandwiches, drinks, sausage rolls even! 😋

Through the day we can visit places of Knopfler historical interest and/or visit the Spanish City (which has already been mentioned).

I think that Daniel Evans kind of suggest during this pretalk show that something might happen... He is leaving Chichester to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, and they host not only Shakespeare plays in their various theaters in London but also other musicals and shows!

If Newcastle is the winner and we go to Spanish City, there is an excellent fish and chip restaurant there called Trenchers.  We have been to the one at Whitby many times and both have won awards for the best fish and chip restaurant in the UK.   Just a thought for the trip to Spanish City.

They also serve dishes other than fish and chips, as can be seen from the menu.

Just checked Newcastle flights from the airports close to me, Valencia, not any flights to Newcastle, Alicante, expensive flights to Newcastle, around 200 euros.

However when there is a closed date confirmed, would check if there is any chance.

I guess Newcastle would be more difficult for anyone outside the UK, but it is cooler for MK fans. I rather go to Newcastle as I've never been in the Whitley Bay area, but with those prices for flights, I probably won't go, specially since 2013 could be (Hope so) the year of Local Hero in London, and that's a must!

If you manage to get a cheap flight to Edinburgh it's not a long train journey (one and a half hours).  Of course you'd have to factor in the cost of the train but it might be worth checking out.

Going to Edinburgh is worth always, but is also expensive from Alicante. Only cheap destination from here are London and Glasgow.
