And so, onto week 2 of the Dire Straits Album Elimination Poll.
Last week the following albums received the following votes for least favourite album:
Dire Straits: 3
Communique: 12
Making Movies: 8
Love Over Gold: 7
Brothers In Arms: 18
'On Every Street' received 26 votes out of 74 and was the first to go.
which one will be next?......

That's tougher. I vote Making Movies because of the atrocious cover picture, the fact that it was named after a song that was never finished, the fact that it only has 7 songs and it's not Love Over Gold level songs except for Tunnel Of Love. So not so tough after all :lol

Making Movies is my favourite.... no doubt.
It's time to push out the overcelebrated Brothers in Arms...
Tremendous poll... :D

It's not the fault of the album that it sold well. Maybe it's just damned good! Don't be afraid to like something popular. :)

As much as I love TOL Making Movies is the one I vote for.
-
"Don't be afraid to like something popular:
:thumbsup :)

For me the Brothers in arms album had to go first, so I hope it's the next one to go.
I'm not afraid of saying this about something popular. ;D
-
I knew a girl who said she hated The Beatles because they are too popular. And I was like — are they popular because they're good or because they're (or at least were) hip? And I think they are popular because they are good.

They were very good before they were popular! ;)

I had already voted for Making Movies in the previous round.
Thank you for Tunnel of Love and Romeo & Juliet but time to say goodbye.

The Beatles are the best band that there has ever been. Anyone who argues is an idiot.
They are not however my favourite band.

I would agree with you on that, Dusty.
-
I love The Beatles but they are also not my favorite band. Favourite band? Comes from Deptford from 1977 :)
-
Me too, but you would be crazy to argue that Dire Straits were a better band than The Beatles. They weren’t even a band.
-
Of course, that's just my opinion and nothing will change that. Dire Straits gave me more than The Beatles, so it's more important to me.
I think they were a band.
-
Technically they were a band but really they were a vehicle for MK. And that worked out well.
-
Yes. Here I can agree :)
-
I don't know a single song from the Beatles. It's not a joke, I literally don't.
We're poles apart just at the mention of them.
I don't know why, but it must be a kind of self protective reflex?!
I don't go there.

Quite agree with you....
-
This is like asking who's your favourite child....
Communique has to go for me, underrated and often overlooked, but less developed than everything else on the list, and certainly a less evolved soundscape. Its interesting to think about what that album could have become given slightly less pressure to deliver and a little more time....

I saw The Beatles lots of times at The Cavern with my friends and they were a great little band, but even though we loved them we were amazed when Love Me Do went into the charts and I went on to buy lots of their albums. However, I have hardly listened to them over the years. I am much more a fan of DS/MK than I ever was of the Beatles and can't imagine that I would sit down and listen to their music like I do DS/MK. I do appreciate that they were a fantastic band and great songwriters and I'm glad that I had the chance to see them so many times.

Nice. Might have been quite something to see the early Beatles at the Cavern!

I wouldn't want to spoil anyone here ;D but at this point already, it's not difficult to guess the title of the two finalists, if not the winner itself. But let's wait and see as "there can be only one"!

It's most definitely interesting! We shall just have to see how the other rounds go....

We'll see, as people's choices get knocked out their votes may go elsewhere...

No, I can't do it, I had a least favourite album, but it seems I don't have a next least favourite ! (Withdraws undecided).
I missed the Beatles - just - My father took my brother and I to a nearby town to see the Shadows & when we came out there was a long queue for tickets for the Beatles who were on the following week. He wouldn't stand in the queue with a load of teenage girls & said we wouldn't have been able to hear them anyway. That's probably my biggest musical regret. I did see Macca & Wings in 1972 - that was great !

I saw the Beatles again at the Royal Court in Liverpool when they had become famous and your father was correct, I didn't hear a thing because of all the screaming! It was far better to see them before.

I listened today to the 2 contenders for this week's choice. And i enjoyed the other one more... So my vote goes to Brothers in Arms.

I've finally got around to voting and this time around I went for Brothers In Arms to go next. I do like the album but of the five remaining it scores least highly for favourite individual tracks. The title track is a firm favourite of mine and would definitely be in my top ten DS songs with a strong case for a top five spot, but of the other eight songs I think only Money For Nothing and The Man's Too Strong would have a good chance of making my top 20. The other four albums have at least two songs each which would make my overall top ten, putting them ahead in this regard. I also feel it's probably the least cohesive of the remaining albums, as side one (the most radio friendly music in their catalogue) has a very different feel from side two, which feels more like a progression of the Love Over Gold style for the most part. I personally favour the latter, but the two sides appeal to me in different moods making me less likely to listen to the complete album in one go. Each of the first four records has a different mood, but I think the mood of each one feels broadly consistent across the whole album in a way that Brothers In Arms doesn't.

I simply love such discussions. Although not present at the discussion, to know if she means the Beatles or their songs, either way I think that I get her point. Every major popular artist and his art, tends to occupy so much space in the public sphere that it drowns other artists, commercially (and eventually artistically) that many times are more interesting and more valuable (an early manifestation of the ever conquering global market and companies, that prefer to sell multiple copies of one product, for more profit and less marketing expenses). Nick Drake anybody? (Although he has become very popular as well) Alas even if these artists are discovered further down the history line, the saturation of the public with the prevailing artist is so great and influential, that is almost impossible to understand the value of other artists and the way the world would have taken if their art had prevailed. So the dislike is a logical repulsion of popular, because of the loss of the other unlucky artists, a desperate cry for justice for the ignored art, a sad cry for all lost possibilities.
Or maybe music can not save our immortal soul and merely serves as a distraction from more serious issues, that actually shape the world.
Oh well, after all, for the last 50 years people are baptized in a Beatles world, even if he/she doesn't like them. The point of reference will always be them. All he/she can claim is that s-he is really into ... the Rolling stones. Still I prefer the Kinks.

;-) I think so too.
The sad truth is that lately I get the feeling that most people do not believe in the existence of a soul. (Unless it is Otis or Don.)
And a soulless world is an inhumane world.
-
Exactly! I want to talk about it and write about it more often. Thank you vgonis.

I guess it will be time for round 3 soon...... ;)
