And so onto the 8th and final round to find out the AMITers favourite MK solo album....

Shock result on the cards?

Shock result on the cards?
Maybe, just maybe Dusty...

Nah, STP is going to win. For sure.

By the way, for me the best MK solo records are already gone, so I'm not gonna feel identified by any of these two, even I think that ShangriLa is better than STP, none of them are better for me than my favorites, that are gone.

Same for me. Get Lucky, Golden Heart and KTGC are my top 3. Shangri-La is OK to my ears but I prefer Sailing to Philadelphia so…

Oh I agree with you jbaent. I know my faves are already gone but at least Shangri-la has a chance perhaps...

I absolutely love Shangri-La and think it's his masterpiece. I'd go one step further and place it atop the list of ANY of his albums, DS included. It starts with his greatest musical accomplishment (5:15 AM) and features one stunning example of songcraft after another. His writing, playing, and even singing are in peak form on this album. Even the songs that feel like throwaways aren't. (I know some will definitely disagree, but that's the fun of this). And as an added bonus, his attempts at the blues work on this album. That's normally the one genre (I think) that eludes him (especially on later albums), but Sonny Liston (the perfect Knopflerian anti-hero) and Back to Tupelo are such great songs.
I so thoroughly enjoyed reading y'all's feedback on these polls. It's been a great diversion.
Cheers

Hello brother! I totally agree. On top of all that, Shangri-La is a perfectly recorded album as well and perfectly named after the studio. Everything's amazing about it, even the cover, even the promotional photoshoot was perfect. And promotional interview, too. Everything! And it's especially cool for me personally because I got to know Mark right in the heart of this album's release and Shangri-La tour. So if Shangri-La wins in any poll, I'm not surprised at all. This album is a masterpiece!

I'm pleased to see the love for Shangri La here. It's my favourite but doesn't get talked about much so I didn't think it was as highly regarded as it appears to be here.
STP might still come out on top but it's nice to see it's not the landslide jbaent was predicting!

I agree and even if STP wins, Shangri-La will always be the winner for me! :)

I do guitar lessons on Mark's songs and naturally, I never planned this, but I almost covered every single Shangri-La song. I can't do Donegan's Gone yet becasue I don't have a spare guitar for slide playing, so apart from a couple of songs I covered it all. It just shows to me the incredible strength of all the songs on the album, even the "quiet" ones are amazing songs. And loud ones are so great you can listen to them on repeat. Music is subjective of course, but at least I have this funny additional metric to judge things.

Two points to make on this fascinating post.
Firstly, I wonder how different the album would have been had MK not had the accident. I know he always takes his time but it feels like this one possibly “marinaded” a bit more.
Secondly-could you do a lesson on the rhythm part on Donegan’s Gone?
Richard’s part and the way he plays it looks quite involved (to me anyway.)

Shangri-La is the winner! :clap :clap

Shangri-La is a great album - one of my favourites! :) Some of my other favourites went out early eg Kill to Get Crimson and Tracker, but I am very pleased that Shangri-La won. It is a much better album than STP and a well deserved winner.
-
Well deserved! :clap
-
Good ol' Shangri-la.... :clap
-
I am a great STP fan but good to see every fan has a different taste
There is no best MK album-there is no worst MK album
They are all superb at their own
-
Glad my favourite album won! Love every track!
-
Is round 8 still happening?
It's not needed, we already know the winner.
??? :think
;D :P

Indeed they are all masterpieces in their own right...
And so the next poll is - MK Soundtracks??

Nah, STP is going to win. For sure.
Ahem??!!

Bit of an upset :clap

For me, the only one that is perfect from start to end is Get Lucky, I even love the blues one despite is so out of context, the rest are all very good, specially Ragpickers and Crimson, but all they have one or two songs that I don't like.
Same goes for Shangrila, is a record that is perfect for me until Sonny Liston, after that song until the last one, all songs are good but weak in my opinion, which makes that record not perfect, but close to. And, also for me, far superior than STP, is more really a true MK solo record than Sailing.

A friend of mine talked me, long ago, a kind of joke interpretations of the MK solo records, that I more or less remember, so I'm gonna share with you just for a laugh
GH - I'm so in love, that I'm gonna make a record with Straits sounding songs, celtic, country and all kind of weird styles, because, love is so amazing!
STP - I can't believe I'm still trapped with the DS sticker on my cd's, I should do something to run away!
RPD - Hey, now, listen, this is me going solo in the end!
SL - Hope you like this because, this is how is going to be me! Hey, I'm back!
KTGC - I have a wonderful studio so, excuse me for experiment!
GL - Now, I know how my studio works, listen to this!
Privateering - How you dare saying that my blues song on GL wasn't good? I can play the blues! Take a double shot!
Tracker - Should I learn to play slide, or am I good with it? Are these songs long enough, or should I repeat again and again these verses?
DTRW - I had so many gaps working on my musical that I had fun doing this or that, it's not bad at all!

Brilliant post! Bang on summary of all the albums. With Tracker I might add “I can play in the key of C major but can’t remember the chords for any other key. Guy remembers, cuz he never forgets anything but he won’t tell me.”
-
GH - I bought an expensive Les Paul so I'm going to play it on every song to justify the expense.

And “I hired the best musicians in Ireland so I’d better get my money’s worth.”

Shangri-La also containts arguably the hardest MK riff there is which is Song For Sonny Liston. The thing is so hard to play and emulate that I still can't do it. Also, Donegan's Gone riff is pretty tricky to play properly, not just to mess around it. And Bob Dylan actually called Sonny Liston his favourite MK song, which says a lot.
