Heidi Talbot':
"Empty Promise Land is a duet with Dirk Powell, written by him many years ago and featuring Mark Knopfler whose guitar sings like a dobro. It dramatises the end of a relationship, male and female voices reaching a shared place of resignation: "This woman whose life is boiling underneath her skin/This lonely man who's longing for his dreams again".
-
Sounds very promising!
Powell is such a great musician.
-
I saw Dirk playing with Joan Baez a couple of years ago.
I thought he was fantastic, although I didn’t really enjoy Joan.
-
Sounds great. I remember seeing Heidi and John years ago before they really made it big in a theatre in Basingstoke UK. She has a beautiful voice, one of my favourite live female singers, although ironically imho this doesn't come across as well in her recorded material.
Looking forward to hearing it...

Two songs from "Angels Without Wings" (2013) album with MK are very nice.
-
The album will be released on March 11th.
-
Nice enough song, lyrically some interesting moments. The melody is pretty generic, what I was expecting really, and Marks contribution is negligible, just acting as a strummer really. Could have done with a little distorted LP or Pensa Swells in there to really bring it to life. Its pleasant but nothing more....

Why use Mark for that, I wonder.
-
Thank you baloney:)
Pretty. It's a pity Mark didn't sing.
-
This song did nothing for me at all. I couldn't hear MK's guitar and I don't like Heidi Talbot's voice on this song.
-
The song is ok, nothing more, I like Heidi's voice but Dirk sounds like any other singer, as for Mark, well if it wasn't stated he was playing on it, I would not have have guessed it :(
-
The guitar-playing is clearly Mark's and he's not actually strumming but rather fingerpicking. I'm not an expert but it sounds like his National or some resonator guitar on an open tuning.
That said the song is average, a waste of a good opportunity.
The strumming part might be Dirk's.

I am a bit shocked with the comments regarding this song. I find it so beautiful! I must be biased as I do enjoy Dirk Powell however I find Heidi’s voice beautiful to listen to! Musically I adore it! Mark is in there somewhere so let’s be happy! For those who enjoyed Mark’s British Grove Broadcast - This would have been something he would have added to the playlist. Very chilled and I adore it!
-
Looks like there is a couple more songs with Mark, according to Qobuz: https://www.qobuz.com/fr-fr/album/sing-it-for-a-lifetime-heidi-talbot/pftm3th96ejub (https://www.qobuz.com/fr-fr/album/sing-it-for-a-lifetime-heidi-talbot/pftm3th96ejub)

Great! Thank you regmka:)
-
Thank you regmka! I have just listened to all of the clips and although the individual songs, on first listening, sound very pretty, they are all quite similar, but, of course, they are only snippets. I still find Heidi's voice too high and squeaky for my taste, but others will love it I'm sure.
One of the other songs, "There You Are", sounds more promising with some obvious MK guitar work.

Agreed. Her singing voice sounds 'weird' to me.
Nice to hear some little licks by MK though!

I think I tend to expect a lot from any MK related novelties. Yes the song is easy-listening and I like the voice but it never seems to get anywhere unlike most MK songs which evolve and get to some point of sort. This is pretty but it's not something I will listen to intently more than a few times, after that it will be good background music to work or to cook with.

As I said earlier in this thread I saw her and John in a small theatre probably 15 or so years ago. Heidi's voice absolutely blew me away that night. She had that rare ability to absolutely hold a room in the palm of her hand (Kate rusby is another English folk singer who does this as well). I just think for whatever reason her records have never captured the real essence of her voice ....
It's all very subjective though....

Heidi Talbot, John's wife and Kate Rusby his ex-wife. The voice of Kate Rusby is much more to my taste. I find her songs and her voice really beautiful, as you say, it's all very subjective. :)

I’ve been so tempted to start a separate Kate rusby thread before. I LOVE her voice. So pure and beautiful.

Totally agree. Absolutely bewitching voice.
Kate Walsh was another one, discovered her music through her RAH support slot for our mark. Fantastic voice, such a shame she stopped making music....

So, there are Mk contributions to three songs, the one we already know "Empty promise land", "there you are" and "Bring me home".
I hope the other two songs have more presence from MK, because the song we already heard, and the two songs in the other Talbot's record, makes you think why in heaven she needed MK to play with her, when what he did can be done by anyone...

It's OK, can't say I'm in a rush to hear it ever again though.

I will add on my Spotify MK colaboratios playlist, and listen to all of them, randomly as usual, so I would only listen to them that way!
