Title: (21) Precious Voice From Heaven
Post by: jbaent on August 02, 2022, 12:09:04 PM
Recorded during the DTRW sessions, mixed on 2022 for the bonus tracks on second MK studio albums boxset.

It's one of these song titles that may be a masterpiece, but may be yet another blues track just as well. Considering it wasn't even a bonus track, I have doubts, but we'll see...

One thing we know already about this one is that it's not an autobiographical song.   ;D

Maybe it is, in the sense of Pale Imitation it is biographical, in a way  :lol

Bonus tracks or unreleased tracks are not bad tracks per se, just because they are not in the record. Usually songs that are left out of a record and used, or not, as bonus tracks, are left out because in a way, the artist feel dont fit with the rest of selected songs, not because they are not good songs.

Remembrance Day was left out from KTGC, not because it was bad, but because it didn't fit with the general sound of that record, for example. Luckily it fit on GL, but if MK had decided it didn't fit either by whatever reason, it would had been left out too.

I remember a conversation with Chuck Ainlay long ago by mail, in which he told me that some great songs from MK are left out of records because of that, saved for maybe another record, but then it didn't fit with the next, and not to the next again, and as MK has many new songs, he forget about them.

Yes, and don't forget Walk of Life only just made the album!! Also, Two Skinny Kids is the one I want to have released the most, from the rough sounding live version available, it is/could be a masterpiece.

So, the title sounds cheesy as hell, but fortunately MK usually has a low cheese count so it should be ok :)

Yes, the cheesiness of it exactly is telling me that this might be a humorous song or something.

Interesting topic, what is the cheesiest song MK has released?

I really struggle to listen to In the Sky. Such a cheesy song and then the sax comes in to drop another huge dollop of fromage on it.

If we discuss collaborations then Voices That Care is by far the cheesiest. That might be the cheesiest record ever released.

The aforementioned In The Sky is cheesy.

Secondary Waltz is pretty cheesy, although I do like it.

I have the advantage of being a non-native English speaker, so "In The Sky" works for me as I can ignore the words, and it's not that cheesy to me.

Dream Of The Drowned Submariner is a bit cheesy thanks to this trash delay effect on vocals taken straight from some pop singer next door.

"It's the end of the thirties, no time for arties" CHEEEEESSSSSE!

Ah, beat me to it!

I'll raise you:

All That Matters
Whoop De Doo
This Is Us
True Love Will Never Fade
Monteleone
Wherever I Go

and probably some from Privateering I can't recall.

As a father I don't find All That Matters cheesy, quite the opposite.

As someone who has been dumped lots of times I don't find Whoop De Doo cheesy either. It might just be my favourite MK solo song.

Don't Crash the Ambulance is pretty cheesy, and makes no sense.

I would argue about most of these! All That Matters is an old-time waltz and almost like a lullaby (I once got a request to teach this song to a man who wanted to sing it for his newborn daughter), so it's cheesy by definition, and not by choice. The same story with Wherever I Go, I think.

Whoop De Doo is a sarcastic song with contrasting laidback music and sad melancholic lyrics. Personally, I'm so into the character that I don't think about the cheesiness of it at all.

True Love Will Never Fade on the surface is the cheesiest song on Earth, I mean, look at the title! But upon closer inspection, you realize how this tattoo might symbolize something like Mark's affection for guitars or music that will never fade, something among those lines. And again, with stellar guitar work on this song, you almost stop thinking about cheesiness.

Monteleone, I already discussed that one. Without knowing the story, about Monteleone, and how guitars are built, the song doesn't make sense.

Anyway, many of Mark's songs ask for a serious suspension of disbelief to accept or rethink the cheesiness of it. It might be not what you think it is is what I'm saying.

Sorry but I just need to hear some of the lines he uses in most of these songs and I'm reaching for the sick bucket!

Maybe I preferred his writing when he was a miserable sod like me!  ;D

Another advantage of being non native English speaker, that expression has no meaning for me.

Mark would often joke about it during the Hillbillies shows before Your Own Sweet Way calling the Strat the "cheese machine" or such like.  I assumed he was referring to his copious use of the whammy bar.

I love The Urban Dictionary for definitions like this, but people disagree so I think they're stumped here.  My definition would be something that uses a lot of clichés and/or is overly sentimental.

That's a good way to put it. By the way, speaking of overly sentimental, why has nobody mentioned Your Latest Trick yet? Sax is like THE king of cheese instruments. This song sounds like an answer to Careless Whisper, which is the king of cheesy songs.

Can't wait to hear the whole song. It sounds a bit like the Shangri-La period (5:15, Trawlerman's, etc). If he would just make one more record, I hope he comes up with more songs like this. I can't explain it precisely. But it's probably my favorite post-TRD type of song.

Just from the snippet, I can understand how this song had to compete against Trapper Man and Dancefloor. It should have at least been on the bonus disc.

After listening to the snippet a few times, it touches me, unexpectedly. It takes me back to the excitement of the KTGC and Privateering snippets and what's more to come. Last years were strange, and it doesn't help that the touring is over, something I always looked forward to. Feels like a new era, for me personally as well. It also seems fitting. Though I have no clue what the song is about, it doesn't really matter what he releases; I always love it :)

How do you feel about these lyrics for now?

You could sing the phonebook
If there was still a phonebook
You could sing the phonebook
It would sound beautiful to me

Is this the chorus? The bridge? Or one of the verses? Anybody have a clue?

The melody sounds great in this snippet and I wonder how it sounds as a whole.

Anybody also know the full length of it maybe? How long is it?

"Not your typical bonus track"

What do you mean?

For many of the bonus tracks, you kind of can take a good guess why they were thrown away. Like, "Heart of Oak" is too short, just 1.5 minutes, and "Terminal of Tribute To" is obviously too harsh to be put on the main album. But this feels like the main album song. I'll need to take another listen to guess why it was cut.

I have the feeling that it wasnt cut...

Guy said that it was recorded during the DTRW sessions but was mixed recently for the box, so I guess they had so much material that decided lo leave some tracks for the future, unmixed, maybe to be used on other records, maybe to be shelved forever. Think that "Get Lucky" and "Remembrance Day" were recorded during the KTGC sessions but ended on "Get Lucky" record. Maybe they were unmixed and saved for the future, or maybe they were not fully recorded.

The bonus tracks were all mixed for the album, but ended like bonus tracks, others are not even mixed, like this one, and I'm sure there are some other that are recorded, but only the main instruments and they didn't finished the arrangements, this might be a kind of question for Guy, that I'm sure that he would be very happy to explain, if he's in the correct mood.

When I first read the lyrics of back in the day, I think it was 2018. I was expecting something magical, and when I heard the song I was disappointed with the style, it sounded so corny.

Precious Voice From Heaven was a complete mystery. And it turned out to be a great song. Enough with the saxophone and trumpet. This is my MK :clap :clap :clap :clap

One of the greatest melodic pop songs MK has written in recent years. Lovely guitar licks that I deeply felt. Love the doubling of electric and acoustic guitar on the guitar solo just before the bridge and the sound of the guitar reminds me of what I love about "Money That Matters." Also reminds me of "My Claim to Fame" somewhat, very Golden Heart-type of songwriting IMO. What a gem. And damn, the mixing and panning in the outro is gorgeous.

I like it on first listen.

Some different stuff going on.

The playout is cool.

Seems to be about the gentrification of a music town making it too expensive for the musos to live there? But where? London? Nashville? Portland?

I’m also curious. I think it’s a classic MK mix of a character story with some auto-biographical influences and some history/place/fantasy. I have it on repeat since yesterday, magical song it is! I still can’t believe this was shelved until now.

Guy’s outro sounds remind me a bit of 5:15 from the 2013 tour.

And that guitar… Pensa + Reinhart? Or the Kemper again? I love that the intro guitar sound has not been overloaded with delays and reverb.

I actually thought it might've been about Dylan, just for the "I'm 42 years old" lyric. Dylan was 42 when Infidels was released.
As much as "Lights Of Taormina" and "Silver Eagle" can be about Dylan, so can this song be, in some way.
And the mention of folk rock in the lyric and similar stuff, make me believe that more and more.

First seconds of the song I thought it was a rewriting of Two skinny kids, but later I also thought about Dylan and also about him when he started his solo career, but there are big parts of the song I don't understand yet.

So I meant more that the person in the song is a third party singing about Dylan... a musician struggling to get by as times change. But he could listen to Dylan sing the phonebook.

(If there was still a phonebook).

It may be wrong, but for me the ageing unsuccessful singer would have quit by now "I'd be long gone ... if not for you, girl".
And the girl urges him not to stop and quit "Ah, but you have a precious voice from heaven".

So for me the beautiful heartwarming melody reflects a beautiful story:
He and his music is not important to the people (anymore) but it still means the world to her.
For her it's still "a once in a blue moon ecstasy" and even if he would just be singing the phone book it would still sound beautiful to her.

Is that not beautiful?

Since the overall theme of the song is the difficult fate of an (ageing unsuccessful) musician
it makes sense that the song ends with yet another perspective (apart from that of the singer and of his girl), that of an onlooker or storyteller with a more general thought-provoking call to do something for the musicians/artists in your local community (the cool kids who make your town), because they'll leave for other/bigger places if the venues are closing down.
And thus we as listeners of the song's story are drawn into it as well at the end.

It speaks earlier in the town about being priced out of the area, the coda is warning that if property prices get too expensive the cool people who made the town famous will have to move out.

Maybe the song is about Austin, Texas.

Remember your skinny young folkster
With his guitar and his greasy cap
Do you still want your ageing hipster
With his records and his trilby hat?

Angel heart, it's time to let go
It's so much harder to live in this town
Fact of it is I'm forty-two years old
And the venues are closing down
Folk rock's just beat up old names
I've been holding out as long as I can
It's a new tech crowd, it's a property game
And I'd need to be a richer man

Ah, but you have a precious voice from heaven
A once in a blue moon ecstasy
You could sing the phone book
If there was still a phone book
You could sing the phone book
It would sound beautiful to me

Nowadays when I get up and sing
They'll be talking like I'm not even there
Now it appears I'm maybe not their thing
That's okay though it's not that I don't care
With all the rest of the semi-fixed abodes
With their colours and their songs and their soul
I'd be long gone down the road
If not for you, girl rent and control

Ah, but you have a precious voice from heaven
A once in a blue moon ecstasy
You could sing the phone book
If there was still a phone book
You could sing the phone book
It would sound beautiful to me

The cool kids who make your town
Gotta help them stick around
You wanna keep your city hip
Or all the kids will desert the ship

It needed a few listens, but now I can honestly say that I love it and it is going around in my head all day - a real earworm!   I really don't understand why it wasn't on the album, because it would definitely have been one of my favourites and is certainly better than some that were chosen.

Thanks, Robson, for the lyrics.   :)

There are so many great songs that didn't make the main album, but especially after STP, I always could think of a good reason. Small Potatoes on TRP has too much of an STP feel, Summer of Love wouldn't have added too much to SL, and Follow The Ribbon would have messed with the flow of Privateering. Other later bonus tracks wouldn't have fit with the other songs on the album (Early Bird, Terminal) or would have been too similar to existing songs.

But this song is different. I still can't believe how this was shelved. I'd dare to say it's the best song we've heard in years! Classic MK band, that signature post-DS guitar sound, the doubled acoustic guitars, Guy's sounds, a story you can relate to, different sections, catchy melody. Man, I really love this song.

Mainly because of the obvious relationship and because the protagonist seems to think as a producer but also sings. And because if someone has a voice from heaven, it surely is Emmylou. Both of them have a close relationship with MK also. Not 100% sure about the 42 years though as that would have been in 1990, as Kennerly was born in 1948.
