Title: happy 84th birthday to our hero (nudge nudge)
Post by: Pottel on August 12, 2022, 10:57:42 AM
i know it is not 84. still, as mentioned by someone else on another "channel", who shall remain anonymous, he sure behaves like an 84 year old, lol.

Anyways, what i actually want to say is that i am surprised NO one else has posted a happy birthday to our guru yet???

After 70, better not wish birthdays any more.  Just a reminder of how old he is :)

As we say in France, the candles are more expensive than the cake...

Not my guru, but to some extend, ok for idol.

As I am not among his close circle I usually do not post HB messages.

Still I wish him love and a good health.

The year was 1994. I was a fresh faced 16 year old and despite my tender years I was something of an old head on young shoulders. As such it was with some excitement when I saw that Hank was coming to play locally, at the much missed Capitol Theatre here in Aberdeen.

I secured tickets for me, and my mum, the only person who wanted to come with me, and counted down the days before I could enjoy a performance by the guitar twangin’, rhyme slangin’ maestro.

I went to  note the date on my calendar – this was a freebie given away by Q Magazine and included various bits of “on this day” trivia throughout the year. I was amazed to notice that the date of the gig – 28th October – was Hank’s birthday – surely a good omen for a fantastic show.

The show itself was a great affair but I was surprised when no one in Hank’s band made reference to the occasion – who wouldn’t want 2,000 Aberdonians giving them a chorus of Happy Birthday To You? But I resolved to make sure the occasion didn’t go unmarked. You see, I had brought along my copy of The Shadows 20 Golden Greats with a view to catching Hank at the stage door for an autograph, and this was a great chance to wish him many happy returns.

I dutifully lined up with a small band of fellow autograph hunters and was amazed when someone actually came to the door and let us back IN to the venue to meet the great man. Inside they had lined up trestle tables and there sat the man himself, cheerfully signing everything put in front of him with his famous toothy smile in full force.

I got to the front and as he was signing I took my opportunity. “Happy Birthday Hank” I said with youthful enthusiasm. Hank looked at me. Actually it was more of a stare. The smile had disappeared. Time seemed to stand still. He thrust the signed album back at me. “Thanks” he replied, completely deadpan.

I walked out, tail somewhat between my legs, wondering how I could have possibly upset him. After all, I had remembered his birthday – no one in his own band had for god’s sake!

It was only years later I learned that Hank is in fact a devout Jehova’s Witness.

Now, I respect any person’s personal faith, but couldn’t he have forced a smile and some appreciation for a sincere gesture from a young kid?

Don’t talk to me about Hank B Marvin.

...

via the legendary watchtower?
I met two missionaries, a couple in their late 40's from US and I studied with them in Croatian! What amazed me about them is that they learned Croatian for the purpose of their ministry. And the study was all for free.
We remained in contact, albeit they are now in US. They connected me with their fellow Croatians when they left.
As I remember they lived in Croatia as a missionaries more then 10 years.
As for the watchtower magazine, yes, we used it sometimes in our studies.
I remember the book we studied was called What Does The Bible Really Teach.

Wow, that's weird behavior by Marvin. You'd think he'd be more generous to someone who clearly isn't familiar with the rules of his religion.

About Hank Marvin, whatever imaginary celestial creatures or whatever you choose to believe, to be kind is the correct thing to do. If religion makes you being an ass, then it says it all.

I'm sorry for you, Dusty, what a disappointment.

Dunno... This story Dusty shared has this... duality about it. On the one hand, to expect a young kid to know what "Jehova’s Witness" is, let alone that they don't celebrate birthdays, AND to know that Hank Marvin is a devout Jehovah's Witness is obviously too much for any human being and he could behave a lot better in this situation.

However, two opposing facts to me are: having a gig on a birthday is a giant red flag. Don't know about others, but I tend to have a day off on my birthday because I don't want to spend it working, you know. You need to be a very special kind of a guy to work on a birthday, and I'm not one of them.

And the second thing I thought about... Man, this situation really shows how much he really cares about his faith, if nothing can't stop him. I think it deserves some respect, whether you consider his religion wrong or don't like it. The man is devoted and doesn't attack your religion and seldom promotes his own, so it's really something. Gotta respect the guy.

Exactly.
I did my read while before I met them, but had many questions in store.
They really provided the answers I was looking for. It turned out the book essentially is a Bible manual for dummies. I checked this book another day again, it is really what it is in essence - just a manual for dummies.
I had me my second read of the Bible during our study  course and after and it was just a different book from one I read first time.

all religions are weird cults, just some are bigger than others.  I had no idea he was a Jehova Witness. They are proper weirdos. They hounded me at my home. They kept turning up at my door and knew my name. It was actually quite scary. They kept sending me watchtower magazines. All because I told them I don’t believe in any God.

To me it’s all about faith - but that’s ok if you don’t have it, that doesn’t affect mine. I respect every religion as well as the absence of any. If there’s one thing the Bible has taught me is to be non-judgemental about other people’s beliefs.

Then can I suggest you JUST take one of the biographical accounts of the life of Jesus and read them. Check out what it tells you about his life. Either Matthew, Mark, Luke or John (though I suggest Mark.)

Then can I suggest you JUST take one of the biographical accounts of the life of Jesus and read them. Check out what it tells you about his life. Either Matthew, Mark, Luke or John (though I suggest Mark.)

What for?

Someone that died to save us... And what his death save us from? I don't think life is any better than it was before his death. That book has a lot of holes. You really need faith, a lot.

Actually all religions have lot of holes and need lot of faith to work, and surprisingly, they work. Mankind has not solution.

The paraphrase of Psalm 23 in Baloney Again is beautiful:)

The Lord is my sheperd
He leadeth me in pastures green
He gave us this day
Our daily bread and margarine

Prefer butter myself.  ;D

The health effects of butter largely depend on the diet of the cows it came from

Could you continue the discussion of religious matters via PMs? It doesn't belong here.

I totally agree!
