Title: The Jimmy Iovine sound
Post by: hunter on November 23, 2022, 12:10:27 PM
I was playing Making Movies yesterday, and during Expresso Love there's a certain chord that rings out that reminded me of something from the Tom Petty song Here Comes My Girl, which is from the album Damn The Torpedoes. Producer? Jimmy Iovine. And indeed that album has a sound and feel reminiscent of Making Movies. Another well-known Iovine-produced album from that era is Springsteen's The River. I created a playlist with these three albums and play them just now on shuffle, and it's remarkable how similar they are in terms sound, feel and musical ideas: Big drums, big space, the piano sound, lots of drive. Here's a quote by Iovine: “I was trying to do something,” Iovine says now, “that I’d never heard before: singer-songwriters with a power sound.” That's exactly what those albums sound like :)

If you watch the Tom Petty documentary (and I really recommend you do), they speak about taking a loooooong time to get the drum sound on Damn the Torpedos, I guess he knew what he was doing by the time of Making Movies :)

Which documentary is that, dusty? Or, where do I find it? There are several on YouTube for instance.

Running Down a Dream, directed by Peter Bogdanovich. Tied with Sparks Brothers as my favourite music documentary.

Thank you. I found it here: https://watch.plex.tv/movie/tom-petty-and-the-heartbreakers-runnin-down-a-dream

I only started listening to Tom Petty this year! Love his music. And his guitar player, Mike Campbell, is amazing. Much more rhythm oriented and riff based than, say, Mark, and very minimalist, but SO tasteful.

OK, the link I provided includes a lot of ads. I will have to find a paid streaming service.

Edit: I found the part where they talked about the drums. Very interesting. It's indeed a huge drum sound they developed, and it's the same sound they used on Making Movies. Sounds great for those big, cinematic songs Mark wrote for that album.

Mike Campbell is a cool guy, and he says in interviews that he is a fan of MK.

Not just Mike Campbell.

The whole band was fantastic.

My biggest regret is when the european tour aborted in the mid 2000's following the bombing.

I love this quote by Iovine:

Quote
The right people were in the room together. It really was making a record in the pure sense of the term. The whole thing sounds like one song. But you what that is? That's the writing, the guy who wrote it. He wrote the album like that; he wanted to make the album like that.

Always wondered how a second DS album with Iovine would have been.

It would sound like a studio version of Alchemy  :)  Thank God he didn't work on Communique. It's perfect, almost sacred to me.

Edit: Missing word.

Yeah, I agree. Communique to me is the best sounding record; thick, organic, warm sounding. Those clean guitar and drumsounds are some of the best ever recorded, I'd say!

Ha, that is, if you will, a rockumentary.

Spinal Tap is in the same zone as The Rutles imho, not really a "documentary", or indeed a fake documentary
BTW spinal Tap and The Rutles are my two fav movies in the music territory
