1997

- January, recordings for Wag the dog in Nashville
- February, 14th: Marriage with Kitty Aldridge in Barbados
- April: recordings in Nashville, between 10 and 12 songs recorded, temtative release date April 1998
- May: Notting Hillbillies tour in the UK
- June: Chet Atkings Musicians Days, where he plays "The next time I'm in town" with Chet Atkins
- July: recording sessions in Nashville
- September 15th, Music for Montserrat concert in London, Royal Albert Hall

During the recording sessions they work both in the STP songs and also the Wag the Dog soundtrack

1998

-January 17th, Isabella Knopfler is born
- January / February: Recordings for Metroland soundtrack in London, Sarm West Studios (AKA Basing Street Studios)
- June: Recording sessions in Ocean Way Studios, Nashville
            24th June - Chet Atkins Musicians Days II concert in Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, MK plays the whole gig in the house band and play his               
                               songs, playing "Two Skinny Kids" for the first time, and "When it comes to you" with John Anderson.
            25th June - Master Session at Blair School, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, MK plays again "Two Skinny Kids" and for the first and only
                                time, a new song titled "It's been a while"
- July: Concerts with the NHB at the Ronnie Scotts in Birmingham and London
- November: Recording sessions at The Tracking Room in Nashville,  with Emmylou Harris during Thanksgiving Day

During this year, MK refused to write the score for a David Puttnam film titled "World of Moss", that would change its name to "My life so far"

1999

- April: Recordings in Nashville
- June: John llsley's Marriage, he plays with John, Alan, Guy and Ed:  'Walk Of Life', 'Sultans Of Swing', 'Money For Nothing', 'Nadine', 'Wild Theme'
- July: Ronnie Scotts gigs with the NHB
- November: Recording at The Tracking Room in Nashville, with James Taylor recording three songs, "Sailing to Phildelphia", "Pretty Boyd Floyd" and 
                          "Diamond Joe", the last two for a new James Taylor record. Those Taylor's songs remained unreleased until 2015.
- December: Recordings for the "A shot at glory" soundtrack in Edinburgh.

During this year MK refuses to write the soundtrack for the film "The Legend of Bagger Vance", also he writes the music for the cartoon "Robbie the rednose reindeer: Hooves of fire"

2000

- January: Recordings for the "A shot at glory" soundtrack in Edinburgh
- March:  MK gets his OBE. Titled for the new record announced as "Sailing to Philadelphia", with a selection of 25 songs of 29 in total recorded, to
                     choose 15. Temtative date of release in May, but later delayed to September. Also recordings for the Sun Records Tribute.
- August: What it is single is released, and Ed Bicknell published a note about leaving MK's management
- September: STP is released.

I wish we could get this kind of detail for his whole career. Interestingly, the film My Life so Far was directed by Hugh Hudson, who directed Altamira, music by Mark Knopfler!! I wonder just how many films Mark has turned down the chance to write music for? I have just noticed Hugh Hudson died 10th February this year.
