Title: Great Gig in The Sky
Post by: qjamesfloyd on January 14, 2024, 02:03:10 PM
I was just watching Great Gig in The Sky from the Pulse concert, and all 3 ladies give a subtly different but equally stunning performance, but I was wondering who else do you think could give a great vocal performance of this? I was thinking Adele, I think she has the power, range, and soul for it.

Ola Bieńkowska and Amy Smith did a great job on that one

Merry Clayton who famously did the backing vocal on Gimme Shelter. Or Chaka Khan. Basically what I'm saying is that a strong black gospel singer would do a great job on this.

Me neither. Pottel isn't a real music fan, he's the type of person who goes for a pee during Romeo & Juliet ;)

For me, Dark side is one complete piece, from start to finish, and so should be listened in sequence, some albums are just like that, and I believe were designed like that, just like Tubular Bells 2 and The Songs of Distant Earth by Mike Oldfield.

For me it depends if I want to listen the record or just a few songs.

If I want to listen the record it has to be from start to finish, even "On the run" that is just noises for me, I prefer the instrumental demos with real instruments they did live before they went to the recording studio.

I didn't listen to the album. Yet.
But who knows, maybe I'm late to do so already?
You just can't catch up with everything with your days numbered.
When I think of the song title, Nimrod is the first name that comes to mind.

Lol. yes, that's a good one.
To be honest, I did listen to the song "Time" but that's all. Great peace.
The whole album is scheduled in the not to distant Sunday evening when I'm at home.

In my opinion The Great Gig In The Sky is a timeless masterpiece, it never fails to move me with Rick Wright's beautiful piano and Clare Torry's unforgettable vocals. Time has always been my favourite song from Dark Side of the Moon, I have Great Gig vying for second place with Us And Them and Brain Damage/Eclipse (I prefer not to separate these last two). I totally agree that Dark Side is best experienced as a complete album, although I do sometimes listen to one or two selected tracks on their own or as part of a Pink Floyd playlist.

I must say I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the Australian Pink Floyd Show do their rendition of this track when I saw them last autumn, particularly as their vocalists include Lorelei McBroom, who toured with Pink Floyd on the Momentary Lapse and Division Bell tours.
