My love for Waters
« on: December 13, 2013, 04:41:31 PM »
Ok, I confess, there is a bit of (friendly) provocation towards Pottel in the creation of this topic ;)

I want to state first that I *really do* love Gilmour as well. The "Live in Gdansk" live album is a serious competitor  to MK on my Iphone... I deeply regret that I did not attend the 2006 tour. I feel that Gilmour's music was better than ever, more sobre than in the last "PF'" tour (1994). Especially Echoes, last appearance with Rick... Sad.

This being duly ackwnoledged, back to my own topic, I really do love Waters, and I feel that these two men should not be opposed one to each other. To me, they are like MK split into two persons: Roger is the master song writer; Dave is the master guitarist. Together, they could overcome their philosophical and musical differences, and that led to one of the most legendary group in history; when they split, none of them achieved a success that even came close to that...

What fascinates me with Waters (the man) is, like Mark, is complexity. He has been described as "the biggest asshole in Rock'n Roll"... well... he is temperental, no doubt, but what did he really do to deserve such a harsh statement ? spit on a disrespectful fan ?? com'on ! this was 36 years ago, and this is not worse than the finger of death ! Fire Rick during the Wall sessions ? but Rick, in his own words, was good at nothing at this particular time... leave the band ? sue the remaining members for calling themselves "Pink Floyd" ? Well this was very clumsy from a legal standpoint... but even Dave ackwnoledged that he had not written a song in 5 years at the time...

Now, we see a wiser Roger, who was able to say: "I take my part of responsability in this negativity". Only for that, I love him. It is so rare to acknowledge one's faults. He forgave, moved on, became a better person... He is of course excessive in his statements and egoistic, but so human... who else could have said: "Until DSOTM, I was a socialist; afterwards, I became a capitalist..."

Long live Roger and Dave, your renewed friendship is the proof that everything can happen in this world. Even the best.

Thanks Roger for your legacy, how a student in architecture could become the architect of complex, elaborated, strange and beautiful pieces of music... Thanks for Meddle, DSOTM, WYWH, The Wall... and even for "Amused to Death", came to love this solo album !

Keeping my hopes down, will probably help me appreciate these albums more. Usually the first 10-15 years of a good group produce the good songs, then it is always mediocre, with the occasional spark of old glories, very sad to admit...
Come on, it is not funny anymore.

I also love Waters, but in his Floyd era more than solo. His solo stuff its too much political for me. Im fine with criticism like the record Animals, that its probably my favourite Floyd record, but his solo stuff, even The Final Cut, are really too much for me. I recognize that are really good records, but too much caffeine for my relaxing cup of caf

Childhood's end is one of my favorite songs from Obscured and I liked this live version very much! I also like Free four very much, and Stay and Wots the deal and OK almost everything!
Come on, it is not funny anymore.

totally agree with all herlock said

I think that all great Floyd songs were gorgeously composed and written by Waters, and surely "transcended" by Gilmour interpretation (both on singing and playing)

Money is a typical example :
THAT riff (in7/4) was composed by Waters, and off course the whole song too, but its surely wouldn't have been the same without Gilmour singing and playing on it.
another brick II is another example : an entirely Waters song, but well known both by his melody-lyrics, AND his guitar solo

whish you were is a wonderful Gilmour's melody and music, but so emotionnal because of Waters' lyrics

and of course many examples of co-composing : shine on, dogs, echoes, time, etc...

they were both at their best while collaborating together, rather than solo
