Just because Guy thinks they should have a crack at Border Reiver at rehearsals, it doesn't mean 1) they will have a go at it during rehearsals 2) it will make the set list

I trust him :-) if we could have as many surprises as we got in 2008 ! i would be delighted :D

Hmm, was only about 6 wasn't it?

Cannibals, Hill Farmer's Blues, Marbletown, Daddy's Gone to Knoxville (soon dropped), Postcards From Paraguay, Devil Baby for one night. The rest was all very predictable.
That's really only four then!

Some of us had "Secondary Waltz"  and we had "Going Home" instead of "The Wild Theme", too.  :)

Iwas fortunate enough to hear Going Home last time! ;D

But on the whole, i agree with the other sentiments here...tour personnel being the same - yeah - i can see that being a good thing - they are a talented bunch of guys.

However, concernes over the setlist do still remain...

Calling Elvis - No thanks - hang up the phone

Walk of Life - No - sit back down

What it is - No it isnt - not again!

Telegraph Road - The road to nowhere

Romeo & Sultans - We arent gonna get away without these are we - no matter what anyone thinks about not playing them this time

Why Aye Man - Oh God Man (no!)

Speedway - mmmmm - if im honest - no

Money for Nothing - Money for NOT playing it??

There is so much quality back catalogue material - and yes - iknow the arguement about signposts in peoples lives and they are now "our" songs as we have played them at significant times in our lives etc - but i really do feel the setlist could do with a good shake up - oldies are good - but fresh oldies please!  Oh and a nice dollop of Get Lucky - as tunes like Get Lucky, Cleaning My Gun, Piper, Border Reiver etc - shouldnt be overlooked ;)

OK, I forgot about Going Home, I suppose having the full band version was a bit of a surprise (if having music from Local Hero in any form at teh end of a Mark Knopfler concert can be considered a "surprise"), and I loved it, but Secondary Waltz wasn't a surprise, I guess the surprise was that he played so little off the new album.

Personally, I would love it if they played WOL SFA and MFN. Well, not really personnally but I'm hoping to take my 5 year old and he loves these songs, I am afraid he's not so much into the "slow songs" as he puts it

Calling Elvis - was only ever performed properly on the OES tour.  Without the pedal steel and extra percussion it sounded terrible.

Walk of Life - became "Stroll" of Life.

What It Is - was one song they never quite got right live - it always lacked the power and energy of the studio version.

Telegraph Road - must get played unless they decide to play Tunnel of Love which will not happen - you need an epic to finish the show properly IMO.

Why Aye Man - I love this song!  Keep it in.

Speedway - If ever a song was made to be played live this is it.  Any crowd would go mad.

Money - Could replace Brothers now, or So Far Away

Please no more So Far Away - it's the same every time and it was bland the first time and they can drop Our Shangri-La for me now too and Sailing to Philadelphia.  Two good songs but not great live songs in that they just slow the pace down just far too much.  True Love Will Never Fade can go but he'll have to play one from that album so I guess that'll stay.

I agree, "Calling Elvis was great on the OES tour, but I really liked it at Vaison and Copenhagen '96 too!  Also I liked it on some of the NHS shows - it was a bit funky and different to the other versions!   :)

I would reduce the DS stuff to just "Sultans" (although it sounds worse tour after tour) and "Romeo" (which is the same tour over tour, except for the few secons intro) and the rest, Mark Knopfler solo stuff.
You might get lucky, now and then

Also I liked it on some of the NHS shows

The NHS shows were good, but not as good as the BUPA ones.

"Going Home" would have sounded even better if he had played it with the Les Paul again. That 96 version was fantastic!
As for the songs I could do without, I'm afraid my first vote would go to "Brothers In Arms"... I really don't know why but I've gotten tired of it Also, PLEASE, no "Our Shangri-La" again or I'll personally climb up onstage and rip out MK's whammy bar!
