If Guy thought it was best played without the middle solo, then presumably he thinks they are playing the song more poorly on this tour then. ;D

In my humble opinion, they never played a proper version of What it is live  :(

I agree.  I've often thought MK found the lyrics difficult to sing whilst playing the guitar and so they slowed it down and also his guitar playing while singing is very weak lacking power.  In fairness the lyrics are particularly complicated and sung fast in this song.

However, I listened to the Denver version last night and it's good.  If only the guitar sound when he was singing was more powerful.

I like the idea of Mark finding it difficult to sing and play his own songs live. doesn't make us mere mortals feel so bad when our efforts fall apart  :)

While I agree that What It Is lacks some punch as compared to the album version, I've always thought that Mark's playing is really strong live on this one.

Oh, I only meant his guitar playing while he is singing;  it is almost inaudible!  Richard's acoustic is louder!

He doesn't often get the the lyrics mixed up but he has on this song many times which is why he has to concentrate more on the lyrics than on the guitar I think.  The solo's are fine though.

I haven't heard all the live  versions ever played (not even a fraction of the ones that are available on bootlegs) but I tend to agree with you, the album version is awesome!

I have to agree that the version of SOS from the 16th, is probably one of the best i've heard from the last few tours. Sure hope he plays it like that when i see him in London.
He seems to have found some passion and meaning in the song again. Cos it seemed to have lacked something over the last couple of tours.

My guess is that they omitted the first What It Is solo in 2008 because Mark found it difficult to play.
No, I don't think so at all. If that was the case, he would just have played it differently.

It's possible, that's what he did on many other songs. But still, on that tour nearly all of the fast licks disappeared and it was no coincidence.

And it seems to be the same on this tour, or not? Really strange... And I remember MK using some white powder (Chalk? Magnesium?) for his hands in 2008...

Well, the What It Is solo is back and so are some of the fast licks from Sultans. He may be struggling but I'm sure he'll get there if he keeps playing these demanding parts every night.

There are 2 different recordings available and both have very good sound in my opinion.
