I could not agree more... Unless its just a preference to some of you like Mark in a lower key!?

I think Mark's voice is absolutely brilliant on this track and it's certainly not out of his range :).

Mark's voice has blown me away so much over the last few years, it's a style I feel that Mark could not do with Dire Straits! It would not have sounded right back in the day.

It's mainly on his first line, it's sounds like he's straining to reach that high note.

On the lyrics, I think it's more likely that Jimmy Webb changed the lyric himself, I don't think MK would disrespect another songwriters work by altering it. Or perhaps they discussed it between themselves. :)

There is no question Mark's voice improved over the last 15 years, and it's very cool to finally know how it sounds in full range but still I prefer when he sings in low keys - his natural territory. High keys are dangerous for MK, I think. It sounds terrific on a record but when performed LIVE it is a struggle. For example, I loved his harmonies with Emmylou Harris on All the roadrunning album, but they didn't sound as great live. Mark has set up a vocal trap on himself. You can tell that he's excited that he can sing stuff that he wasn't able to sing 15 years ago, but it requires effort and precision and I always thought a great advantage of MK's singing was this laid back manner which he still has on stage even today.
...Well, he's a big star now but I've been a fan of his for years. The way he sings and plays guitar still bring me to tears...

Wow! I am so used to Johnny Cash's deep voice on this song it was almost a bit of a shock to hear Mark sing quite high - but a positive shock. I think it sounds brilliant! Also, as much as I love the version with Cash, Nelson, Kristofferson and Jennings, it has always sounded a little too 80's and overproduced to me (the spaceship sounds for example) but this version presents the essentials of the song. Very nice!

By the way, I didn't know Mark was interested in sailing. Interesting!

Woaaaw !!
One of the very first country song i've heard (by Cash Nelson Jenning Kristoferson...)and MY favorite country song ever !
But ....I didn't know it was written by Jimmy Webb.... :-[
Love this version with Mark !

Is it me or?

At 1:00 I hear "I was a sailor. I was born upon the Tyne...."  ( instead of I was a sailor. I was born upon the tide) but maybe that's just my imagination? has MK changed the lyrics?

They changed "Perhaps I may become a highwayman again" in  'Perhaps I may become a songwritter again'... i love that

Haha Yes that seems to be my favourite line in this song ,but it is really hard to spot the difference the original is tide but I prefer Tyne!

Interesting interview with Jimmy Webb on NPR Weekend Edition Sunday. If you click on the "listen to" he expands on MK's vocal influence a bit more than it says in the text that accompanies the article. What was most interesting was to hear how much the other musicians in his group listen to MK.
