Special (versions of) songs
« on: May 19, 2010, 04:23:45 PM »
i wanna start this thread to collect "special" songs, or special versions of songs, as, always when i hear i think, oh, need to share this with the AMIT members, and then forget.
so, with this, i hope i won't
examples are:
Feel Like Going home: Sung by mark at the 1998.07.28 Ronnie Scott's show.
So Far Away: Sydney 1986 and Newcastle 1993 version
....
EDIT Collected comments from below posts:
Devil Baby 30-03-2008 Amsterdam KTGC Tour
MfN: Montserrat version with Sting, Clapton, Collins. Awsome
Speedway: RLRR version with Emylou. Fascinating
Sultans: Live Aid version. A bit messy, but so charming and energetic.
BiA: Mandela version. Feels like the second coming of Christ.
TR: Vaison'96. Stunning.
ToL: Munich'91. Feels so smooth and touching, makes the (although brillant) Alchemy version sounds like a rehearsal.
Going Home: Wembley 85 with Hank B. Marvin, so powerful; also, Vaison 96, incredible energy.
TMTS: Wembley 85. A crime that it was never released officially. A song considered for revival nowadays according to Guy, but this has yet to happen...
Tunnel of Love Uniondale 85
Where Do You Think You're Going at the Rainbow Theatre 1980 (BBC ARENA 80). Amazing....

from the Hillbillies...Railroad Worksong, (which is OK on the album),  Redcar 97. It's on Youtube. Mark's solo goes on and on and is full of emotion.

I do like Water of Love from the Vaison 96 show.  Some days have that different guitar riff going through my brain all day!!

Six Blade Knife, from the Live at the BBC album. Slow burning!!!
Six blade knife and In the gallery - 2nd Rockpalast show, imho the best versions of these songs, extended ending solos, very special. Six blade knife from Live at the BBC even has messed up lyrics.

Where do you think you're going - I don't get it why many people think that the best version is from Arena 1980. I think there are far better version (Boston 1980, Wiesbaden 81, Cologne sept. 1979).

Calling Elvis - Vaison 1996, has differently arranged chords in the middle solo.

Solid Rock - Tokyo 1983 is kinda special, because it doesn't have the sax ending solo as usual on alchemy tour.

Ride across the River - Stockholm 1985, very powerful, great drums.
any Knopfler, Floyd or Dylan will do....

i really like the "Next time you're in time from the "Jazz Diaries" with Chris Barber.
"This is a very nice radio show that Mark Knopfler did for Chris Barber in his radio show the Jazz Diaries. They recorded four songs exclusively for this show, two instrumentals and two with vocals. Interesting to hear Mark Knopfler play with a jazz band and nice interview in this one hour show. Mark Knopfler joins at about half time in the show - the part about Mark Knopfler is from track 8 to track 18. Goin' home is not the Mark Knopfler song, and it is played only by the Chris Barber Band, also recorded exclusively for this radio show. Perfect sound quality."
any Knopfler, Floyd or Dylan will do....

I love " pyroman" live version in LA with Bonnie Rait as a guest. Super awesome.  Anyone ever had a listen to it.  Also, in this same concert, MFN was rearranged a bit in the beginning. And I just love it.   I believed it was the concert in LA 2001.
