B-sides
« on: August 23, 2010, 01:24:02 PM »
just heard Gravy Train, and besides the obvious fact that i love it as i do with most b-sides, i noticed the Calling Elvis riff at about 5:34...

...sort of...

Great song indeed! I bet this is exactly the kind of "guitar-hero-dueling-stuff" that MK doesn't want to play anymore or even hates to play these days...
Sad enough...

I wouldn't say that he hates to play it but he is now more inclined to play something else when acting as Mark Knopfler in concert.

But sharing a club stage with friends musicians, getting loose after a few pints of lager and why not let it roll it?

Yeah, I can imagine that, too.
And she's sitting in her Lusso, in the early morning sun.

Referring to the topic here, are there any b-sides at all these days? Would you regard "Early Bird" and the three Deluxe Bonus tracks as a kind of "b-sides"?
Early Bird is really a great song... If I remember right, the last "real" b-side was "Summer of Love"? Great, too. Also "Small Potatoes" was phantastic...

It is really a pity that MK doesn't want to release the classic "single" with exclusive tracks on the b-side anymore...

Let's hope the next album will change the release politics a little bit. No overpriced Deluxe-crap with crappy songs that in other times would have gone directly  into the bin...

To me, a b-side is always a song not released in the record as released as a bonus track in a 7'' single, a cd-single or whatever format, but always released, so Pulling down the ride, homeboy, Good as gold, Early bird and Time in the sun, to me, are b-sides of the Get Lucky cd.
You might get lucky, now and then

It doesn't make any difference to me at all - I have all the B-sides on one disc.   :)  Well, two!  ;D

Maybe MK didn't think it fitted in very well.   Personally, I would have preferred it to either No Can Do or Don't You Get It, neither of which I like as much.

In those days he had so many songs that somehow someone was always sure to get something else apart from the album. So 14 songs on the Golden Heart album, 70 minutes of music - and bonus on singles. That was really great! Nothing came together with KTGC, and one short song with Shangri-La... But I do not want to complain, Marks records are always valuable and worth of every single cent... I remember that sticker on the Wag The Dog soundtrack - "specially priced mini album - this mini-album has a total running time of 24 minutes and has been priced accordingly" That's what I call commercial integrity!

I think "My Clame To Fame" could have been perfect for replacing "Nobody's got the gun", one of maybe three, four songs that I always try to avoid and that I only "listen" to if I am not able to put off the stereo (in case I fell asleep or something...  :lol) The other ones are "Angel Of Mercy", "Ticket To Heaven", Don't Crash The Ambulance" and sometimes also "Les Boys"... But that says nothing about their objective quality, it is just that I do not like them.

You see, if MK were to ask each one of us what songs should be on his albums, he would get different answers from all of us, and that's OK, it means everyone is correct, because they are all good songs - just some are better than others and everyone has their own favourites   ;D   I hope that makes some sense!

In the case of the  GL extra, the difference is to order the expensive Deluxe box instead of buying one or two singles. And to have to buy GL again but in mp3 format to get another rarities...
