I don't know if this is posted before... But it's quite cool!! A lot of MK licks! I remember that we were
saying about the fact that MK recorded 23 different takes for just 1 song... OMG, a pity that we can't
hear those takes...

Mark probably thought of playing one or two takes on a lazy afternoon and give this guy what he wanted in the fast way. He probably was astonished to
meet such a demanding guy who got him playing so much different takes. I wonder how they socialized... And how the atmosphere was...

However, I like every single take I could hear on this clip... I wish Mark would do some stuff on his own where this kind of guitar playing can be heard...

Yes, it is officially released.  I downloaded the EP "Amerikana" from Thomas Dolby's site which has three tracks, one of which "17 Hills" is the only track featuring MK.    I like the whole EP, but "17 Hills" is my favourite track - I love it!   BTW If you look at the "No News is Good News" thread, you will find more about this track.    Also Terry Kilburn has posted some news on MK News about "17 Hills" which apparently, is on a CD called "A Map of the Floating City".

Great demo of how a comp track is put together. Of course it's tons easier in this day and age of pro tools click and drag. The computer age allows the artist to be much less rehearsed when it comes time to recording.

Well I think this is one of MK's best single collaborations to date.  It is full of MK licks and after watching the making of it sounds like Thomas Dolby knows a bit about MK. I dont think a member of this forum could have squeezed more out of MK if they tried.  Apart from demanding a solo from tunnel of love.

It's OK, but personally I feel like it's MK on autopilot. A lot of the licks sounded like ones he's played before in other songs.

I think when it's one of his own songs he puts more effort into constructing something new that he hasn't done before.

Yes, could be... But I like these licks very much. It makes a song very powerfull
And you can see in the first youtube video that Mark has done a lot of effort, a very
large amount of different licks.

Hmm, well, I wouldn't say it has anything to do with rehearsed or not. If you don't 'get the song', it simply doesn't work. No matter what stuff you record. But, of course it's much easier nowadays to try some new things and mix some parts. Recording an additional track is quite cheap.

What kind of guitar do you think he used here? I'd guess a Les Paul with both pickups selected, or maybe the new Don Grosh with both pickups. Sounds a bit like Piper to the end?

I can't say I'm too crazy about that sound. Undistorted it works great for funky rhythm guitar or surf/twangy stuff, but as a distorted lead sound, I think it's too wimpy. Bridge-only would have been awesome though ...
