According to Guy, this is how the "guest appearence" happened:

Not long after we arrived at the venue, Pete came into the dressing room with a message from Bob inviting Mark to join him onstage tonight for one of the songs. Without hesitation, Mark agreed and moves were afoot immediately to get an amp up on stage so Mark could run through the song with Bob's band. Within minutes, Glenn Saggers had rustled together the necessary equipment and Mark and Bob's band went through the changes of 'Beyond here lies nothing'.

So, Bob Dylan didnt have to say any single word to MK in all the process... Well done Bob, very humble from you. At least he invited him to join them at stage in the end.

Well it was a fantastic gig. MK was having a great time and his singing and playing better than the last 2 tours. I had no idea what to expect from Dylan especially with all the stuff about him being past it, but I must admit he was great and does have a huge stage presence. It also helps that he has a top band. So if this is your first Dylan experience I can say don't be scared he really does bang out some catchy rock and roll. Looking forward to Hammersmith even more now.

Hi arabia!   I know that I have been a bit hard on ol' Bob myself, since seeing him live last week.   I have lots of his albums from the early days until the present and I love them, but seeing him live was something completely different.   As many people have said, his band was extremely accomplished, there is no denying, but the volume was just too loud for my ears and, of course, there was the problem I had with Bob's voice and his lack of communication with the audience.  Anyway, I think I had better stick to listening to his albums in future!  

I hope you enjoy your Hammersmith concert and maybe by then Bob and Mark will be playing a bit more music together!    

PS One of the songs that stayed in my mind from Manchester was Forgetful Heart - that one sounded very nice.

Hi Pottel!  Yes, as I said in my Manchester review, I really enjoyed "Times Have Changed", "Simple Twist of Fate", but I remember that "Forgetful Heart" was good too!

I dont think there is an us and them mentality, just an "the way we think how the things are and how should be considering what we know about MK and his previous tours" and "the way things are happening with Bob Dylan and that we are not used to that things at all". I was reading "The Rocker" a biography of Phil Lynnott, and I read somewhere that in late December 1979 he jammed with DS at the Rainbow(?). Have you heard anything about that, or any recordings? Mostly curious, since in other parts of the book Phil was quoted saying the Phonogram didn't pay too much attention on Thin Lizzy due to the enormous promotion of Dire straits, but from what I  know, Dire straits were rather a quite storm-act, selling on the force of their music. But which ever was the case both songs that they recorded together were great, and the video for King's call, was a big laugh with MK's hair a bit raised to remind us of Elvis!

Since the beginning of the common tour, some 70 people joined AMIT. I guess some of them (most of them?) are actually BD fans, like Arabia. Why don't you give us your opinion, about MK and BD tour. It would be nice to read something from another fan, a bit of insight, to help some of us understand Bob's art, the way he offers it. No pan intended.

Unfortunately I can't make any of the shows on the current tour but I have seen Bob lots of times so can offer an opinion.
For me Dylan is(not was) a great singer and without wanting to sound pretentious I regard his voice as another instrument in the band, so on the rave up rock and roll tunes he plays- eg Highway 61 Revisited, Thunder On The Mountain-it is all about the sound of the music, the way he belts out the lyrics against the pounding drums and guitars. It's certainly not a sound that will appeal to everyone but I love it and just don't think it would sound anything like as good if he had a more conventionally pretty voice or if his singing was more laid-back. Love or hate his voice I think everyone would agree that he doesn't hold back when he's singing!

That's just one part of his live shows though, he could not have written Not Dark Yet or Forgetful Heart as a young man and his voice now is just perfect for that material, I remember a show from a few years ago when he did Nettie Moore-for the length of the song the entire arena was silent, hanging on every word. There are not many people who can do that.

There's also his stage presence, despite not talking to the audience or allowing video screens to be used Bob is the most electrifying performer I've ever seen, it's impossible to explain but he such natural charisma.

Basically though it's all about his voice-for me the way he sings is the main reason why I love him so the opposite is bound to be true-people who hate his voice will never enjoy/appreciate the shows.

Bob is a one off, and one of the many things that makes him unique is the way he provokes so many extreme reactions, this is the man who fills large venues year after year, makes albums that go to number 1 both sides of the Atlantic but still p...es off so many people with his live shows. There really is no one like him.

the best joke i have heard dylan mumble at a concert was in new york city at
irvingplaza december 8th 1997, where the opening act was joan osborne who sang
the man in the long black coat, after singing her set she was at the bar
drinking, and it is a small place...maybe two thousand...dylan had just finished
his first seven, eight, songs and was introducing the band and thanking the
opening act...all of a sudden he says: "and i'd also like to thank joan osborne;
joan and i is gonna sing a song..." and joan in the back stands up to come to
the stage, when dylan says: "but not tonight."
