anyone know who played the guitar solo at the end of the 1991.08.24, The Point, Dublin, version? it starts at around 4:25 something, and sounds very un-knopfler like. but too good for friggin Phil Palmer
i also noticed that the Going home version on that show is like the only one i know that starts with a normal piano, instead of synths...
i always used to love this series of first shows in Dublin. (also the Glasgow ones a bit later were brilliant)

Edit 1: Ah, you meant that little bit of acoustic guitar before the steel guitar? That's got to be Mark playing acoustic with a plectrum. Similar licks as on The Way It Always Starts from Local Hero.

We attended a couple of those Dublin shows in 1991 - the first time we'd gone away without the kids, as I recall. I think they were the first shows I recorded on behalf of my wife. I wonder where those old cassettes are.

I was at one of the Glasgow shows.  Friday the 13th as it happens.  I remember going from school and meeting my English teachers' kids at the concert and my Dad gave them a run home.  Next week at school the teacher asked me if I enjoyed the concert.  A couple of years later that teacher went on to manage 3rd division football team East Stirlingshire in his spare time and gave us free tickets for the games!

Anyway, back to the actual concert.  I always recall coming away thinking that a lot of new songs were played (unlike now) and that PONO was fantastic live.

I've checked. We attended the shows on 23 and 24 August 1991. I've also found both sets of cassettes but have yet to set up my hi-fi here, so I'll have to seek out an old Walkman to se what they sound like after all this time..

I've got my Walkman set up and playing through pretty decent bookshelf speakers. The Walkman is a Sony TCS-350, so not Sony Pro standard but still pretty good, and the samples from the two concerts I've played sound crisper than that YouTube clip and the vocals clearer. Could someone tell whereabouts in the concert "Long Highway" apppeared.

One of the samples I played was the start of "Tunnel of Love" with MK's brief spoken intro and his voice comes over strongly. We were in the balcony, on the left-hand side, quite close to the venue speakers. However, I have a memory that, for one of these shows at least, we were amongst a bunch of journalists who talked more than I would have liked. I can't recall whether it spoilt the recording..

19 songs at the first show and 18 at the second. One of the second cassettes is wending its way through "Brothers in Arms" in another room  at present, so I'll soon know whether I got "Long Highway".

Is that You Tube recording of "Long Highway" the best quality that there is around from that show or not?

I've now listened to both recordings and I think the 23rd has the edge in terms of clarity. The Irish audience was quite vocal but we were well above the main body of the audience which helped, though someone near me clapped along (guess who?). We were also pretty close to the main speakers which helped as well.  As I recall, I was pretty pleased with the recording overall. And, not being a particular DS aficianado, it was good to hear "Long Highway" again.

I was just thinking that going to these early shows you would haven't have heard any of the new songs yet because the album wasn't released until between the Birmingham run and Glasgow run of shows.  Of course the Calling Elvis single would have been released I think by then.  So many new DS tunes to hear in one concert, and TOL being played too - how exciting is that!

I know that digital recording devices do have advantages over old analogue equipment but much of the improvement in the sound quality has surely come with the developments in microphone technology. Any recording is only as good as its weakest link.

I think the BIA tour started before the album was released too.  The first concert was on 25.04.85 but the album wasn't released until 17.05.85 according to N&N.
