I downloaded the whole set.  They are the Get Lucky high res promo pictures.   They are pretty weird and I hope we have better ones next time!

I think some of you are being unduly harsh about this set of photos. "Weird" and "strange" are strange and weird adjectives to use to describe them.

I assume they were taken by Zoriah Miller, who is a freelance photojournalist of some note, especially in his coverage of humanitarian crises. His work has even rubbed the U.S. miltary authorities up the wrong way:

I assume the choice of photographer was down to Mark himself and those among you who like "Brothers in Arms" so much may wish to ponder just why he might wish to meet Zoriah and have him take those publicity photos.

I doubt if Mark will use Zoriah again, as he seems to change photographer from one set of promo pics to the next, but, if he did, I for one wouldn't be upset. Indeed, I would applaud the decision.

twm,  I don't find ALL of them weird -  I like those those taken on the sofa in the old warehouse building, very much.  It's just those taken in Highgate Cemetery that I find quite weird, because they just don't look much like MK at all, in fact I can hardly recognise him!   I did already know about Zoriah's work in war zones, etc, btw!

You're more of an MK fan than I am but I could recognise him in all the shots, including the outdoor ones.

The pictures shown on the MK.com Gallery are not the whole set - there are a few much nicer ones taken on a chesterfield sofa, which I do like.   Some of the ones which are taken looking at guitars through a window, look distorted to me, though - MK looks a bit like a sad clown.  If you like those in the cemetery, that's OK, they're just not my cup of tea.   It would be boring if we all liked the same things, wouldn't it!   ;)

To be honest, I like these much more:

If MK is the subject of the pics I think it should be MK that takes most of the picture and not any stone, flowers, wall or whatever. These ones are from the Shangr-La sessions and I like them all very much.

Yes, I like the Shangri-La ones, but I also like the ones from ATRR with Emmylou a lot too - the tourbook has some lovely pictures.    In fact it was the same photographer - Fabio Lovino, so I hope he is chosen again!   :)

The cemetary ones are ok for me, actually I like them, is that high and low angles pictures that I dont like at all as it distorts everything in the picture, MK, the guitars, the lights, the scenary... Total unnecesary.

It's all in the eye of the beholder.

My guess is that Zoriah took a whole host of photos, selected those for consideration and presented them to Mark, who then chose the ones to be used as publicity photos. I can't imagine that any publicity pictures would be made generally available without Mark's prior approval.

Low angled shots; high angled shots; shots through glass; shots of images reflected in glass; shots taken with the camera turned at an angle; shots of part of the subject; shots where the background almost overwhelms the subject; shots taken very close-up; shots taken with a modicum of blurring; shots partly in shadow; shots with high contrast; unusual textures; unusual patterns; matching patterns; and many more approaches: when you're trying to take a fresh look at a relatively commonplace object or fairly frequently photographed subject, you'll try anything.

twm, WOW, the photos you describe sound fascinating! I would like to see them all! In fact I only saw this one photo that appears at the link that Pottel first mentioned. Of course I don't really care how they are taken, as long as they work both artistically and commercially. It is a very difficult combination that we tend to overlook. And yes, it is all down to personal taste.
Come on, it is not funny anymore.
