Pottel, I went there both days, but had to settle for a view far away from the stage, namely the rocks outside the theater, overlooking the theater and most of Athens! (The sound is fantastic up there, but the distance is a bit of a problem) For my wallet 40-50 Euros/day were too much even 6 years ago. I chose to buy their records instead. I found out about them in 1994 and really tried to follow their releases. Not like with MK, just albums and some maxi singles with the songs I like best. These are the photos before the concert, and I have to find the rest. (Probably in color film, that wait to be filed...) Sorry for posting the same one twice!
At the same theater our man performed in 2008! This is a picture from the summit to show you the view! (this one from a Blues Brothers concert, late 1990ies.)
By the way, Europe thread doesn't allow me to post! Any ideas?
Superval, you said the magic words: little time. On these grounds I have to agree with you and Jackal, but the thrill of finding a new sound is very big, and if you don't search you don't find. And yes, I agree, I don't have to dive in the pigsty to get the pearls, when there are plenty in the ocean or some fancy shop, but the metaphor thing is going too far to even understand what I am saying. I just think that discovering means that you might step on an ugly mine, even if it is hidden inside a beautiful prairie. You can't tell if something is beautiful until you taste it.
I am not in favor of music just because it is "new", since new is every music that I listen to for the very first time. Or maybe it isn't. Because when you listen to the rolling stones you can hear Robert Johnson somewhere there, laughing along with the devil at the crossroads. And when something sounds strange to your ears it must be at least intriguing to even label it as strange. As for inaccessible, well, some times I have to take the word of my friends for some things. They have devoted the time to listen closely and repeatedly some things before suggesting them to me. But they can't give me their experience as well. They can only reassure me that this difficult, seemingly inaccessible music, will reward me after repeated plays. One example for me is Kid A by Radiohead. I couldn't listen to it. And a friend of mine insisted it was great. I took this tape during my summer holidays and listened to it every day. He was right. Still not my favourite Radiohead album, but indeed, great. I didn't know it was beautiful, until I understood it. Someone else had to tell me so. And yes many times I disagree with their choices, but I can only say that I don't understand it. After all the very effort to define something as art, is a restrain. And art should have none of those. I always judge the result and not the means and i am certain of one thing, that I might be wrong.
Who likes Philip K. Dick? I am about to finish one of his non sci-fi books, "Mary and the Giant". A very nice book, and guess what the plot revolves around a music store. Some nice insights about music, before the rock' n' roll era. I liked one particular part. Quote:" Let's try and be reasonable.I agree that we have to be clear about the means and the end. But sound is not the means and music the end. Music is a term of evaluation, that applies in familiar sequences (motives) of sound. What you call sound, is just music you don't like!" Reply: "And what's more, if I kick a bunch of bottles, twice, I have the right to claim that I have composed something that is called Etude in Glass, isn't that so?" (I am sorry for this on-the-fly translation. I have the book in Greek and I have to translate back to the original language English.
