Do you get them at Diners still?

was following Shangri-La's suggestion about the red or brown line. What else could it mean?

"When you're dealing with a toastie
What would you prefer, brown or red?"

LE

I feel really stupid to write it, but could it be just mustard or ketchup?
It's brown sauce (HP) or red (tomato ketchup).

Typically you would have either with a bacon roll but neither with a toastie.

So maybe he says it as to show that he doesn't know a thing about toasties? Too modern for him?

Maybe.

They aren't really modern though! Been around as long as I can remember!

Ok. There I was referring to what was quoted in the Article this morning. Would be nice to have more input from people like you who know more about the circumstances...

Yeah, I can't speak to MK's toastie experiences I'm afraid, only my own...

Me & my mates would skip out of school (West Midlands) and across to the general store and either buy some chocolate - or - the richest among us would buy a bacon roll, which was (for this shop) a small roll with the tiniest piece of bacon! This was back in 1988, those were the days!

I love these little stories. Did they eat them with brown or red?

OK, my take is that he's "brexit man" also known as a Gammon here in the UK, a white man, 50+.

He's a pain on the arse and he's been let go from his job because he's a pain in the arse.

He's in the cafe, and he's on his own, but he's trying to engage another customer in conversation, telling them about his old job.

In between he's haranguing the waiting staff, asking where his food is. He's alone so he's trying to get the person to join them so he says he could get them a toastie.

Haven't actually heard it yet...

No sauce was offered or requested! Just drippings of melted butter and bacon fat!!

I had a very tasty toastie at Pret a Manger yesterday - Cheese and Ham with a mustard sauce inside, very hot and crispy.   M&S also do very nice toasties, with ham & cheese inside and cheese also on the outside, but toasties should definitely not have brown or red sauce!    ;D

But still the lyrics are
When dealing with a toastie what do you prefer, brown or red

So what do you make out of it?

Is it maybe indeed him showing no interest so far in toasties as he is a "man out of time"?

Mr Val occasionally has brown sauce with a toastie, but only if it needs it, he says, and he is definitely not a "man out of time"!    ;)
