I think it's a mistake. I wonder why 1979 and not 1978 :think

1979 rhymes better with "one song at a time" so I bet it is not a mistake. Close enough though. They would still be in Deptford in 1979, wouldn't they.

I guess with mistake it's meant that it's 1979 and later 1879?

Yeah, somehow I don't think it's a misprint. The key might be the line:
The times they may have changed, my friend
Some people stay the same

the song as a kind of shot at glory flavour.
fast pace and folkish feeling but wit the theme played on electric (clean/crunch) guitar

I think he mixes old days (when they executed prisoners for show at the Execution Dock in London) with new days and concerts.

1879 is not a misprint.

Yes I thought so, too. But while in Devil Baby, ge divided the different times with different verses, this time it's mixed within a couple of words.

It also seems that it's not really about Chet. Only the inspiring words he used about his past are there?

This seems to be the most interesting song so far, at least to me.

What do you think about the "fakers" line?

Yes, and I also checked where Execution Dock used to be and it´s quite far from Deptford, it used to be close to the Tower of London area, where pirates used to be hang, so he mix locations as well...
You might get lucky, now and then

Definitely a swing at the shitty cover bands.

Also, note that he says three mutineers. If he's still comparing he might have left out DK.  :)

I just checked it again and I can confirm that Mark sings clearly 1979 in the first chorus and 1879 in the second

He used the same lyrical "trick"  on 5.15 am with 1967 and 1867... and how I loved that effect... gives me showers every time and made those lyrics epic...

"And I’ll be out of this place
And down the road wherever
There but for the grace, etcetera
I’ll see you later but it’s 1979
And I’m picking my way out of here
One song at a time"

Maybe 1979 refers to the first DS tour in the United States and album cover somewhere with the American prairies. I am thinking aloud
