New bands inspired by DS/MK
« on: March 11, 2019, 02:41:34 PM »
Seems the DS/MK-style is coming back in style a bit more these days, I stumbled across some songs which have an obvious influence :

Pure Bathing Culture - Devotion :

Douwe Bob - Damn Good Time :

The War on Drugs - Red Eyes :

Anyone has some more new stuff like this?

Well, this stuff was around long before MK/DS... J. J. Cale and all. Some songs seemingly have MK playing in it, but it's late 60s and early 70s.
But with that said, it always baffles me HOW MANY different people admire Mark. It can be a metal musician or rapper, but he still likes MK.

Thanks for these examples, very good music indeed. Here I can agree that it's almost 100% MK/DS influence. A good catch, straitsway75.

Mark has always declared that he does not feel himself a master in any field, neither guitarist nor writer of songs, but in the past 40 years he has written 'his pages' in the history of contemporary music.
IMO in the 90's he was the best guitarist on the globe, he really did what he wanted with the guitar.
As a musical genre he has always embraced everything, rock, blues, country-blues, folk, pop and jazz, with excellent results.
He wrote milestones like SOS-OUATITW-R&J-TR-BIA-OES-STP-SAN-GL-OSATT and more...
He has his fans who follow him everywhere and whatever he does and who acclaim him in all parts of the world.
I love him.

The second one is just country fingerpicking, we are all used to hearing it from Mark but that's pretty ordinary. The first video is totally inspired by Mark though. If I closed my eyes I could swear it was him playing the guitar. As for War on Drugs they take it to the next level, the whole atmosphere they create sounds like DS. I see a lot of MK/DS in John Mayer too.

Except for that general 80s feel, which you find on LOG and BIA, I don't hear it at all in this one!

here is a french duo "Beauty and the beast"

I wrote an article about their album in 2017 :
https://culturebox.francetvinfo.fr/musique/folk/beauty-and-the-beast-un-duo-decale-et-detonant-257617

They sing sometimes in french, sometimes in english. Their style blends bluegrass, folk, country, western-swing...

this tune has a guitar with a MK-flavour imho :

I really need to push for this Swedish guy "Henning" who's been dubbed the Swedish Knopfler. And for very good reasons. His music and guitar playing is extremely close to early DS. You gotta check him out!
