Goodbye speech
« on: April 30, 2019, 02:33:27 PM »
What seems to be known as Mark's «goodbye speech» now – the announcement that he'd stop touring after this last go-around – does he bring that every night now? Was it taped somewhere?

I'd love to know what exactly he says, and how.

In Barcelona he said:

Alright Barcelona - happy or great to see you again
yeah, it's been a long time now
i always loved to be in Barcelona
so, once again is, hello Barcelona
but now, i am an oooold man, you know
so, i wanna thank you Barcelona for all the many happy years of me coming to say hello
it is also goodbye Barcelona for me, i am very sad
so hello Barcelona, dear Barcelona, i love Barcelona
but i will still try to make some records and write songs, but has to be no more travelling for old granddad, nevermind

Thank you, Dutchessy. I wonder whether his repeating this (or something similar) night by night. If so, it would be great to have it on video. HOW he says it may matter a lot, too.

He says more or less the same in all the concerts.
You might get lucky, now and then

I'm pretty sure there's a video out there on YT land.

I found it very moving watching the live stream from Cordoba with the fantastic atmosphere there.  Many fans nearby the recorder were shouting things that were really touching and brought a tear to my eye.  Lisbon was quite different in terms of atmosphere, but the recorder was much further away.

Can you write something more?
I know the way I can see by the moonlight
Clear as the day
Now come on woman, come follow me home

No.  Actually I'd love to but I can't recall exactly what was said and I don't want to say roughly what was said as it would dilute it.  The words were sad enough but when shouted out with as much passion it was really moving.

The first concert I saw was in 1992, and then among fans, especially in the final tour phase, it was said that by now Mark was on autopilot, always same songs, it seemed that he was not having fun anymore, for example as with the Notting Hillbillies in 1990.
Then began the solo career that in a few months will end, but in the last tour, especially tracker, and now, I saw it in a similar picture with the one he had at the end of 1992.
I really don't think he will end his live career in a few months. I think that he will return to the low profile of the Notting Hillbillies, play with his old friends, Steve in particular, in small intimate places in which he will not have all the smartphones pointed, where he will be able to return to what he can do, without great expectations or jolts. who knows in a couple of years we will find ourselves at the sheperds bush empire or  leeds by Steve drinking a beer at the table and maybe Mark pulls out a Sensitive Kind to dedicate to his wife, who knows  :wave
Mark you deserve everything you want.......we love you  :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap

Did anyone else notice the subtle dig at MK on Alan Clarkes web site in his 'news' section.....

I don't really check his website as I don't care much for his attitude. But you mean this part?

"Congratulations to two fellow Geordies who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year: Bryan Ferry and Paul Thompson from Roxy Music. I was there last year when “significant” members of Dire Straits were inducted. Our event took place in Cleveland, Ohio, and a good time was had by all, which didn't include Mark Knopfler who didn’t show up, and who hadn’t arranged for someone to induct those of us who did, which was a first in the history of the event. But that didn’t spoil what was a pleasant few days in the US during which I received the rather weighty award, see below,  caught up with some old friends, discovered Jon Bonjovi is a fan, and did some serious shopping in Manhattan."

It doesn't make sense to "arrange someone to induct those of us who did", because it would mean that MK acknowledges the whole thing, but the idea was to abandon it alltogether as a part of music business BS and with no offence to his fellow musicians. It's a surprise for me that Alan doesn't understand simple things like that... :hmm

But speaking about Mark's Goodbye speech, it's so sad. What do you mean goodbye Lisbon? Are you going to say that in EVERY town? You can't just drop touring and that's it, there has to be shows somewhere (down the road wherever). What if you will go to Lisbon again, for instance? :hmm

Yes, what if he also say it in London "good bye London", does it means that he wouldn't play even small residence in London in the future?

Well, for big arenas yes, but is it really touring if he plays song or two sometimes somewhere...
