I really like David Gilmour, but his work style can be off-putting to even the most loyal fans. David Gilmour once said that Pink Floyd was the laziest band in the world. David Gilmour could say the same about himself  ;) I'm very glad that Mark has a different style and approach to his work.  :)
I couldn't disagree more. "Luck and STRANGE" is a short but brillant album. Unlike Mark with ODR, David dared to move out of his comfort zone, and to go into new territories, the albums sounds almost like opera music at times. A song like "scattered" is really Pink Floyd-grade. "Sings" is very touching, especially live with Romany. "Between 2 points" is really original. "Dark and velvet nights" is just... Wow. Quite gothic! The title track and "Piper's call" are quite brillant. I attended 7 shows last year, 2 in Rome and the 5 NYC ones. I have probably seen his last concert, just like I saw MK's last concert at the same place (MSG). These shows were nothing short of stunning, even if Dave's voice didn't age too well...

But I didn't write anything about the albums. I didn't review the albums.
You said he was lazy...?

Funnily, I think that Gilmour and Knopfler carrers are quite similar after their bands.

And sometimes I like more Gilmour's approach. He never stopped being the guitar hero everyone fell in love with.

I always thought so but about MK and Robert Plant.

Lazy because he records so rarely.

Ah, ok. Yeah, 2006, 2015, 2024, every 9 years... And the he tours very few dates, prices go absolutely crazy. I agree on this one... He said that this time he wouldn't take 9 years, that he will go into the studio quickly, but I seriously doubt it. This is the end... Gilmour will soon be 80, Waters is 82, I don't believe they can tour again... Mk has already quitted... Only Clapton is over 80 and still plays like in the 60s....

But apparently David Gilmour's new album will be released in 2026.

Past 70 years old, each individual really go ageing his own way.

Albert Lee is still touring past 80.

I think it's pointless comparing these type of artists ages, we, as human's all age differently, look at Phil Collins :( I think the person how has aged the best is Ringo Starr.
Knopfler, Oldfield and Gilmour is all the guitar I need.

Doing a parallel, David released, I believe, 5 solo albums instead of Mark that released 10 solo albums not counting his soundtracks + NHB.

2 of 5 DG's albums he barely performed live. His first one is much more a experiment, and the About Face album kind of filled a gap during the Pink Floyd's dispute by Roger/David.
David never played those material after 1985 (with only one exception)

Mark was/is a active musician that released, in average, an album/tour on every 2 years (I know, there are exceptions).

Post 2006 David's releases are way better than Mark's. Every album was followed by a live DVD ("On An Island" tour have 2 DVDs) plus easter eggs, interviews and a lot of interesting stuff.
However, note that the gap between DG's releases: 2006, 2015, 2024 (1978 and 1984 doesn't count). So, every tour was an EVENT. Every tour was a celebration and every "albun/tour" was prepared to have a LOT of material.

When Mark started his solo career, after a 4 years gap, he released a epk, VHS and a CD.
During the release of STP, there was a great documentary about MK (never released officially) + the album.

I cannot affirm if Ed was THE guy with an eye (aka inteligence) for it because, since PC start to manage him, only standard material was released.

What I am trying to tell is that, IF Mark had very few solo albums, maybe his released could be more "Gilmorized".

In my opinion, I prefer more albums than live records.
However, MK solo releases could be better.

Good post.

I got to see MK live in 96. 97, 98, 01, 02, 05, 06, 07, 08, 10, 11, 12, 15 and 19. And I personally think the solo records are consistently excellent, with a few duff tracks. We also got piles of direct live downloads. The only thing we really missed out on was a high quality solo live dvd/blu-ray.
