There’s a knock at your door and……
« on: September 16, 2021, 01:23:10 PM »
outside is standing Mark Knopfler. You pinch yourself but it really is him.
With him, he has an acoustic guitar and says to you “I can come to your lounge and do three songs for you.”

What would you ask him to do? His own or potentially covers if you really wanted.
One acoustic guitar (plus a capo if you really wanted Song for Sonny.) No Glenn for effects or Guy for keyboards and watch fixing.

I think I’d have him do:
-5.15am. Gutted they only did it live a couple of times. It would work well with him just strumming.
-The Boxer. Really enjoyed his cover on radio 2.
-Laughs and Jokes and Drinks and Smokes. I enjoyed the bit he played as a solo piece on the Tracker press kit.

Over to you.

I'd say:

Play three songs that you never recorded or never released by whatever reason, the three ones that you prefer.
You might get lucky, now and then

I see a lot of jokes possibilities here. Like hey, I ordered a pizza, not a guitar. Or oh no, it's you again! But jokes aside, it's obviously a tough choice. Certainly something he never played live. Like In The Sky, Sucker Row and Heart Of Oak.

'OK,  Mark, here we go,

My first one would be 'What's The Matter Baby'
Second is... Hey wait.. Didn't you say three?
(door slams) why are you going now?
Hey? Hello? "

I must admit, as a guy who either transcribed or came up with acoustic arrangements of 70 Mark's songs, not every song will work in acoustic, or you need to really work on it hard, sometimes for weeks, trying different variations, tunings and such. Tunnel Of Love will definitely sound dull on acoustic in standard tuning, however, I tried it once in Open G and it actually kind of works.

Mark, of course, has two huge advantages, being the guy who wrote the song and the great singer. He wasn't in the early days, but he developed an amazing singing voice as demonstrated in many of his recent songs. 'Restless Farewell' has perfect singing from MK. The older he gets, the better his voice gets (at least in the studio, I'll not talk about live vocals).
