Wondering if this song could be about Elvis, who died aged 42..
Also thought it might be sung from Leonard Cohen's perspective about Joni Mitchell, or maybe Cohen himself, but apart from the trilby hat, that doesn't really add up

I don't really see an Elvis connection except the 42 thing...

Remember your skinny young folkster
With his guitar and his greasy cap
Do you still want your ageing hipster
With his records and his trilby hat?

Angel heart, it's time to let go
It's so much harder to live in this town
Fact of it is I'm forty-two years old
And the venues are closing down
Folk rock's just beat up old names
I've been holding out as long as I can
It's a new tech crowd, it's a property game
And I'd need to be a richer man

Ah, but you have a precious voice from heaven
A once in a blue moon ecstasy
You could sing the phone book
If there was still a phone book
You could sing the phone book
It would sound beautiful to me

Nowadays when I get up and sing
They'll be talking like I'm not even there
Now it appears I'm maybe not their thing
That's okay though it's not that I don't care
With all the rest of the semi-fixed abodes
With their colours and their songs and their soul
I'd be long gone down the road
If not for you, girl rent and control

Ah, but you have a precious voice from heaven
A once in a blue moon ecstasy
You could sing the phone book
If there was still a phone book
You could sing the phone book
It would sound beautiful to me

The cool kids who make your town
Gotta help them stick around
You wanna keep your city hip
Or all the kids will desert the ship
I know the way I can see by the moonlight
Clear as the day
Now come on woman, come follow me home

A very kind friend on the forum sent me a download of Precious Voice whilst I was on holiday, but now I'm home I can comment without too many distractions and on better equipment.

It needed a few listens, but now I can honestly say that I love it and it is going around in my head all day - a real earworm!   I really don't understand why it wasn't on the album, because it would definitely have been one of my favourites and is certainly better than some that were chosen.

Thanks, Robson, for the lyrics.   :)

It's a beauty. Cannot believe that this ended on the cutting floor....
Like so many songs it works on different levels, I suppose. It could be a bit autobiographical in some sections.

Precious Voice From Heaven, Pale Imitation, Sky And Water, Don't Suck Me In.....unbelievable these GREAT songs didn't make it to the album.   :disbelief
This is all the heaven we've got right here where we are in our shangri-la.

There are so many great songs that didn't make the main album, but especially after STP, I always could think of a good reason. Small Potatoes on TRP has too much of an STP feel, Summer of Love wouldn't have added too much to SL, and Follow The Ribbon would have messed with the flow of Privateering. Other later bonus tracks wouldn't have fit with the other songs on the album (Early Bird, Terminal) or would have been too similar to existing songs.

But this song is different. I still can't believe how this was shelved. I'd dare to say it's the best song we've heard in years! Classic MK band, that signature post-DS guitar sound, the doubled acoustic guitars, Guy's sounds, a story you can relate to, different sections, catchy melody. Man, I really love this song.

Totally agree, this is the best song from this period in my view. I found this album very average minus 1-2 songs, this song would have been a standout on the album.

It struck me this morning that this song could be about (and dedicated to) Paul Kennerly and Emmylou Harris.

Mainly because of the obvious relationship and because the protagonist seems to think as a producer but also sings. And because if someone has a voice from heaven, it surely is Emmylou. Both of them have a close relationship with MK also. Not 100% sure about the 42 years though as that would have been in 1990, as Kennerly was born in 1948.
