Telegraph Road "à la loupe"
« on: August 31, 2022, 03:24:12 PM »
few weeks before the 40th birthday of the LOG album (20th september), here is my chronicle "à la loupe" ("under the microscope" so to say) about the the song Telegraph Road

it's in french, but any on-line-translator can do the job :

40 years will pass on September 24. It's hard to believe. A very important album for me.

"L’histoire est celle d’un couple, Isak et Inger, s’installant en milieu rural avec toute la pénibilité induite. On ne sait si le contexte est post-apocalyptique ou aux origines du monde. Une sorte de métaphore quasi-biblique qui renvoie au mythe du jardin d’Eden, à travers des allusions à peine voilées à Adam et Eve.

A very interesting observation. I didn't think about it while reading the book Growth Of The Soil but I like it :)

Thank you for posting this study of what in my mind (and I don't think I'm alone in thinking this) is the crowning achievement of the Dire Straits discography, my favourite song from my favourite album.

I think the evolution of a song like Telegraph Road. which was played live prior to the recording of the studio version, is particularly interesting to follow as later live versions sometimes retain characteristics of the original performances that were changed in the studio. In this case, I always noticed that the Alchemy version was shorter than the studio version, which makes more sense in the knowledge that the original live version was typically about 11 minutes long. Another good example is Time by Pink Floyd, where Rick Wright always sang the original lyric 'lying supine in the sunshine' when the song was performed live rather than the studio lyric 'tired of lying in the sunshine'.
I got shot off my horse, so what I'm up again...
