This thread has now descended into a free for all to insult MK and throw as much mud as possible in his direction!  The final insult from a couple of "fans" on this forum is to call Mark's fantastic, talented band "The Dullards" !  Yes, I know that this title originally came from the mouth of Ed Bicknell - it wasn't funny or witty then and it isn't now - it is just repugnant!
even though the level has drifted at times, i do not think it was ever really repugnant Val?
any Knopfler, Floyd or Dylan will do....

Yes, it was probably a bit over the top!   :)

There is another point of view, however, and that is that Ed Bicknell actually thought the band were the opposite of being dullards and he wasn't being offensive at all.  I'm thinking of bands such as "The Stranglers" and "The Animals" -  neither of them were actually stranglers or animals!     So, dmg, I think I may have got it in the end even though I still dislike the nickname "The Dullards".

That's okay Val.  You're perfectly allowed to dislike it as much as I'm allowed to find it funny.  Let's just agree to have a different view on this my old sparring partner!   :)

If you haven't already, please listen to this, Jack telling the story of his time in DS in his own words.

https://art19.com/shows/the-leisure-class/episodes/5e6debf9-de14-494f-b3e4-8505a74122c6

Part 2 is much more interesting: https://art19.com/shows/the-leisure-class/episodes/9d9efa6e-dd15-4910-b5b7-fe1cd82111ab

He addresses his and Mark's relationship.

Wow I've just come across this... Deary deary me. What a sad account from Jack Sonni. Yet again the hypnotic MK fans avoid it for years. Dedicated / biased... & very very blinkered. So sad...

Best wishes.

My word...
I've just read the replies after Sonni's interview.

Comical. Not one poster sticking up for Jack. How sad. In fact it was almost as though no one listened to the damning interview but those that did took bits of it to suggest that Knopfler was the one who had a difficult time / was stuck in a bad situation.

Absolutely laughable.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

I'm out of here. What a bunch of sheep.

Not one poster sticking up for Jack.

Pretty heart-wrenching to hear Jack describe his last meeting with Mark.

Totally heart-wrenching.  Mark was a right b*stard in his treatment of Jack as he has been with so many former band members.  There's no excuse.

While it is kind of sad to listen to Jack's account of how it all ended, to call MK a "bastard" for not continuing to work with Jack is quite absurd. He changed his plans or hadn't quite figured out what they should be -- what's the problem with that? Mark didn't owe Jack anything. He made it possible for him to live the life of a rock star for a couple of months, and Jack seems to have enjoyed that a lot. Great, but why should that oblige him to anything more? If you get a plumber to fix your bathroom, and he does a great job, you say thanks a lot and pay him. And that's it. No obligation to hire the same plumber again for your next, totally different project. I'm sure that Mark had a lot of respect for Jack and his talents -- see his farewell note. But that doesn't make him responsible for his life onward.

They were friends.

It would had been easy to say, "Jack, mate, we had a great time, bit I'm moving and want to do other things, and probably would do it with others musicians, but I'd love to hang around with you when in town".

I repeat, they were friends.

I think it was a bastard move. Same with ditching Terry without explanation.

There's an argument that you have to be a bastard to get to the top, I wouldn't know myself as I've never been top of anything (but I have been a bastard).

These kind of blanket statements make me laugh. You think being the second guitarist in Dire Straits is similar to a plumber fixing a bathroom?
Like most aspects of life, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle, both viewpoints (Mark and Jack's) have some legitimacy.
Jack and Mark were good friends before Jack joined Dire Straits. I assume Jack thought the friendship was bigger than the band gig and would continue into the future. It didn't. I think it's reasonable forJack to be disappointed and sad about that.
All the players on the BIA tour committed to the project for many months and contributed to the successor that tour (and resultant album sales).
So why is it that Terry and Jack were dumped for the 'On Every Street' tour? I think they both had reasonable cause to feel cheated.
At the same time, yes, having paid Terry and Jack for their work up to the end of BIA, Mark had no further obligation to them. But bands and the creative people in them have more going on mentally and emotionally than a days work fixing a bathroom.
