(14) Fat chance Dupree

Fat Chance Dupree   4:15

Fat Chance Dupree
Had it in for me
The cause of which I never could divine
Well they say it had to be
Some kind of fear or jealousy
Anyhow, I did not see it at the time

Now Fat Chance Dupree
Was a trapper same as me
Could have been a reason I suppose
In the winter he'd come down
From his mountain hunting grounds
But I never wanted any part of those

But who knows why
I wish I knew
We feel the things we feel
Do the things we do
Yeah who knows why
I wish I knew
We feel the things we feel
Do the things we do

Kitty Mary used to come around
The most beautiful woman in town
We'd keep each other happy now and then
She did let fall that Chance Dupree
Might try to waylay me
In the cottonwoods down by the river bend

I thought: Come on if you're comin'
Come on Fats
Come on if you're comin'
Good luck with that

Now Fat Chance Dupree
Was lying in wait for me
Which I took to be considerable unkind
I took his weapon from his hand
Which made him understand
He should not have took the path he had in mind

But who knows why
I wish I knew
We feel the things we feel
Do the things we do
Yeah who knows why
I wish I knew
We feel the things we feel
Do the things we do

maybe a song about multiple hurricanes back in 2009/2010 hitting Dupree (South Dakota) or a song about the movie Badlands...?

Guitarist Cornell Luther Dupree?

I like this trope.
I know the way I can see by the moonlight
Clear as the day
Now come on woman, come follow me home

A guy called Bill Labounty played in a band called Fat Chance. He was also friends with someone called Robbie Dupree. Not saying this is the background, but Mark can make the strangest and obscurest connections and write songs about it.

Am I the only one, or does anyone else really like this one? I’m not saying it’s a masterpiece or better than any of the tracks on the main album, but there is something about this one that keeps me coming back to keep listening again. Lovely little song, I say.

It's a grower for certain. I just took the time to listen to it a couple of times. I just could not get out of the Janine loop.  :lol  Nice playing from Greg Leisz and cool background vocals by the boys. Now I try to figure out what it's about.

I don't want no sugar in it, thank you very much!

Who, what is Dupree?

He is a trapper who came down from the Mountain. It's a Wild West scenario, the music implies a Saloon scenery to me. There is even a Kitty Mary, the most beautiful woman in town. If it is a metaphor and for what, I haven't yet worked out.

This really is a good one, really like it. I found myself whistling it at work yesterday which is a good sign.
From the same family as Stand Up Guy. Should have been on the album as a nice variation.

I like this a lot too and agree it should have been on the album, together with The Living End and also Along a Foreign Coast.

I love this one, 4 of the 5 CD bonus songs are really excellent and all very different style wise. It makes a great EP.

Yes. I only saw the answer today. Thank you. Finally we can listen to the album with lyrics.
