Just when I think I'm starting to understand a song, suddenly there are words that change everything.  How to understand them in the context of the whole text?    :think

A parcel of preachers
Talking heaven and hell
They never quit the speeches
They're always doing well

I know the way I can see by the moonlight
Clear as the day
Now come on woman, come follow me home

IF we are to accept that the song is literally about a pawn shop dealer, then it is the pawn shop dealing having a go at organised religion.

Churches, mosques, whatever. Preachers "talking heaven or hell" and soliciting donations from the congregation.

Yes, it all makes sense. And then there's this line:

I'm not an operator
I'm not here to take you in
I'm not here to tell your fortune
Or listen to your sins
I know the way I can see by the moonlight
Clear as the day
Now come on woman, come follow me home
