David Knopfler - New Album - Crow Gifts
« on: January 25, 2024, 07:04:29 PM »
Again... all the same.

https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lirZ4Cj_e4MAaNPNfXl5I-J3VheqsenYE&si=0XZKNKw4gb0iJRCa

There are 1 or 2 good songs.
The rest is the very same. The same piano/vocals melody and a bit of the same folk beats as well.
I believe that DK played almost all instruments (except violin and brass)

At least, he sings with passion.

Lyrically he's very good and the album is well produced. It's fine if you haven't heard the previous 10 albums. It did make me laugh, listening through for the same Chord progressions and modulation in every piano ballard., Pachebel is turning in his grave!

To be fair to DK he's found his niche, his style, and he's sticking to it.

It's easy to be a critic.

Maybe it runs in the family. Or it just happens to most artists when they get older :)

Yep.
I felt the same way.
David piano ballads are all the same.
When he released Ship Of Dreams, those ballads was very good.
But, after the Songs For The Siren album, it's all about the same chord progression.

At first fhey may sound quite alike, but there are still some fine and nice tunes on each new release. Must say that this new album has surprised me in a positive way. I tend to have about 50% like and 50% ok verdict on most albums anyway. Some songs have a bigger impact than other and that’s what it is. I do like the covers he made, like  Book of love, traditionally a song that has been covered in disgusting ways that make you puke. DK nailed it imo, very touching and emotional. Glad I bought this copy too, although it’s quite a hassle dealing with customs.

But indeed, you gotta love piano ballads when buying a DK CD. ;D

that "it's always the same" thing is very subjective

when I talk about MK to friends, family, collegues... they often say "it  sounds always the same, same melodies, same chords progressions, etc..."

And I must admit that they are not far from the truth...

even us as fans, admit that several MK songs are often some kind of remakes in term of music....

There is something I like about David. He always says that every morning he wakes up, drinks his tea and take a guitar or sits in the piano and work on songs, everyday, as that's his work and his passion.

Every single day.

Easy to understand why he's capable of releasing three records a year, with that way of work.

Nowadays, after 25 albums, it's easy to "judge" DK.

I think that he took the wrong way after he leaves DS.
To my understanding, during his period on Dire Straits, he and John were the guys against the band 'modernization'.
David was the guy who wanted to keep the DS original format and style.

If he tooked the way that he took when he released The Giver, maybe he got more credit and sucess and maybe he, today, would get a bigger audience.

IMO, his period as synth-pop artist was terrible.
I know that he follow some germanic musical tendencies during the 80's but, i think that was a mistake.

If he followed the 'roots based' music that the keeps since 1993, his role as 'Founder Of Dire Straits' would be a big plus as he would be the guardian of the DS Original Style.
When DS was accused to be cheesy, he probably would be the "relief" for the accusators.

Well, it's easy to "judge" after 40 years of solo career.

He is passioned by music, that's for sure.
I lke him.
