Listening to it from this isolated perspective, it's one of the most delicate and elegant sounds I've ever heard. For me, it's a true work of art. This nylon sound was a tremendous turning point in Mark Knopfler's guitar hero image; once again, he surprised his fans.

Two things to say:

1. It would have been wonderful and incredible if Mark had played this song live with this extended ending on a tour with DS or solo.

2. I wish there were more songs with Mark playing nylon; he achieves memorable sounds and reveals a hidden depth of his technique.
Let's go down to the waterline!

It's probably also worth remembering the calypso version of So Far Away (intro). Is it the same guitar sound?

very interesting to hear more distinctly Mark's nylon guitar

but he pics are false of course. it shows Mark on folk steel strings guitar, and playing with a pick.
it must be during the recording of Telegraph road, as it's the only song on the album that features such guitar parts

The classical guitar brought a nice nuance to DS. An added palette.

His playing is rough, though (listening to the LOG clip above). Nice musical ideas, but he sounds like he is ripping apart a Telecaster! And the sound has no depth. I'm not saying Mark tried to sound like a classical player, but have a listen to proper classical guitar player. It's a totally different league, and I'm only talking about tone production, not technique.

WOW, this is very nice to hear...
I always liked his playing on the nylon strings, especially the "force" that came out of it while playing Private Investigations live. (1992)

On my whishlist : an acoustic album - among his best songs (and defenitely the B-sides from his three latest albums) are acoustic gems...

There has been told before that MK played his songs acoustic to the band the first days in the studio - those recordings on an album....#keep the dream alive
