Queen - Greatest Hits
« on: October 11, 2025, 05:23:56 PM »
Queen is one of the "other" bands I love to listen to on a regular base, and which is hardly ever talked about at this place, while many other artists of the same level are mentioned regularly. I wonder how Queen is seen and liked among Amiters. I wouldn't call myself a fan but again and again I adore what high quality catalogue they produced. (Talking about the original Band until Freddie Mercury passed away.). Always the four original members, (same as U2), with a lot of dynamics between the members, a highly gifted frontman and somehow one good album after the other. I often compare with Dire Straits dynamics.

The Greatest Hits Album (number 1) is really absolute great and an astonishing collection of great material. Also the way the (vinyl) Album is made is lovely.

I like Queen a lot too. Also Supertramp, also Genesis (both Gabriel and Collins eras) and Police.

Queen has a lot of great tracks in many different styles, which makes them a great band to listen to.

Queen's Greatest Hits 1 & 2 are really really great compilation.

And luckily for Queen fans, many legendary concerts had been released in the last years.

I love Queen during their first era 1973-1977 until news of the world

I wrote reviews about albums from this period : https://textes-blog-rock-n-roll.fr/queen/

after that, I like some songs, but not albums in their entirety

Of course, I really like Queen, but their operatic stylings irritate me a little. Freddie Mercury had extraordinary vocal abilities and at times he exploited them heavily. But they are a great band.

Indeed! So many box sets and releases that it is hard to keep track of it. Queen Fans are lucky (and rich!) people it seems.

And of course it's milking the cow but bery often it is done with a lot love for detail, all possible formats, collector's stuff, complete career and all important concerts available.

DS fans still waiting for Wembley 85 and ONE proper blu-ray.. and all because MK "doesn't look back"...

Great singles band.

For me the fact that they never managed to make a "classic" album relegates them from "top tier" artist status. Highlighting their Greatest Hits as you do (I agree, it's great) underlines that.

Their marketing people have done an incredible job raising their status since Mercury's death.

The film REALLY annoyed me my completely rewriting history around Mercury's aids diagnosis and the band's status around the time of Live Aid. I know you need to take some dramatic licence with these things (see also the "Judas" stuff in the Bob Dylan film, but IMO the Queen film went WAY too far.

Fully agree about the movie. There are other recent questionable decisions lately but the early work or let's say together with Greatest Hits II Queen was really among the greatest.

I guess "A Night At The Opera" could be ranked as a "classic album"?

I've heard some people try to make that argument, but is it REALLY loved like Sgt Peppers, Pet Sounds, Abbey Road, Tubular Bells, Rumours or even BiA? I don't think it is.

For me, the classic album is the last one.

The last one is pretty boring to me, for me the last ones that are really good ones are "The Miracle" and "Innuendo". "Made in Heaven" is only interesting because it was the last one with Freddy Mercury recordings on it.
