PS, IrisRose, you'll get my message.
More info from MKNews:
NEW TV DOCUMENTARY: The new hour long Planet North TV documentary, Mark Knopfler - A Life In Songs, made for the BBC will be broadcast at 21.00 (GMT) on BBC4 on the 28th of January. Looks like they are set to show lots of MK next Friday night. They are airing the documentary twice in three hours and following it with the 1996 Jools Holland Later Special programme. They will then be repeating A Life In Songs three more times over the course of the weekend. (Updated: 20/01/11)
It seems very interesting.
A very good night indeed, we are also fans of Transatlantic Sessions too. We've also booked tickets to see TAS in Birmingham on Sunday night, on their way from Glasgow to London.

No doubt will be up on Dime etc within days. :)
Part 1 is now here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzgm8TLsRIY
The other three parts are uploading now and should appear on YouTube over the next few hours. I'll post the links to them here later in the morning in case anyone has trouble finding them.
Also, if nobody beats me to it, I'll try to get the DVD of this uploaded somewhere tomorrow (any suggestions? dime, perhaps?). It's taken directly from the raw .mpg capture, not re-encoded.
Fantastic documentary! Recognised some people in the audience at a Get Lucky concert! I'll have to have a closer look tomorrow! So, was there anything more on this Jools show than on the "A Night in London" DVD ?
Unfortunately, the only down side was NO SULTANS on Jools, but it was a great night anyway! Thanks BBC! :D

MFN was played, which wasn't on the DVD! The original television programme was 2 hours long and last night's programme was 70 mins! Obviously, something had to go and SOS was too long! Anyway I already transferred my VHS to DVD, but it would have been nice to have had a better recording. Thanks Superval ! It would be nice to see MFN, it don't think this version is available on Youtube.
There was big talk about this decision when the release was made. I think the DVD had the focus on MK's solo stuff because "A Night in London" was released in 1996 to push the Golden Heart album. So the decision to take off some older stuff is not too strange. Also I remember that it was said that Mark was not happy with Sultans from that night because of a mistake in the beginning.. I could have lived with that mistake on a DVD for sure. But what was released in 1996 was the VHS tape, -not- the DVD (it would take another 3 years at least for DVDs to come...), and the VHS tape *does* have MFN and SoS ! The DVD was released in 2004 - I really doubt it aimed at boosting the sales of an album released 8 years earlier, the thing to push at the time would have been Shangri-La... :)
I am eagerly waiting for part 3/4 and 4/4 on YouTube from the documentary right now...

It would have topped it all off had they shown the Wembley '85 show afterwards instead of the rather depressing, uninspired "Later" show but c'est la vie.

It's now risen to 8 and Get Lucky and BIA are in the top 20! :DAnd if you look at concerts on video, RLRR DVD is #2 (just behind Crossroads), Alchemy DVD is #7 ! Not too bad, given the fact that Pink Floyd's fabulous "live in Pompeii" is #20 ! :)
Thanks for all your messages!
I did upload part 3, but it's been blocked on copyright grounds (those in the U.S. seem to have been blocked from watching parts 2 and 4 as well).
No surprise really, I suppose this was only to be expected.
I'm working on putting it up on another site (dailymotion.com...thanks for the tip Justme) and will post the links here when they finish uploading.

Or put the whole thing on: http://tracker.spanishcity.net/ (http://tracker.spanishcity.net/)
If nobody beats me to it, I will certainly do that as well. The reason I'm uploading to YouTube/Dailymotion is for those who can't (or don't want to) download a whole DVD to watch this. Only those in the UK can see it on the BBC site, but hopefully everyone will be able to watch on Dailymotion. Fingers crossed.
Just watched the first 2 parts as well.
Very nice the see photos never seen before, to hear Mark talk about his parents, and, above all, to hear him talking about the Spanish City and TOL which he does not play anymore but which obviously he has not disowned !
I am shomehow (so far) a bit disappointed with the live footage, it is almost all taken from official DVDs: Alchemy, On the Night, RLRR... except for "Going Home" with Henk Marvin in Wembley 85 ! which is telling us one interesting thing: BBC still has the Wembley'85 tapes ! so, please, BBC, go and release this gem ! Best versions ever of SoS, BiA (very rocking), Going Home, TOL, PI.... and the one and only video version of MTS ! Please ! :)
by the way, at the end of sos, they show images from a show, which i recognise from pictures, the tshirt and stuff, but never saw moving images of that, where is that??Isn't it from the BBC Arena documentary that we have on the Alchemy DVD ?

Very nice documentary, too bad he didn't play a part of Tunnel Of Love like he did with 'SOS, RJ, MFN and Get Lucky. That would have been awesome!
Oh, and the 'Faggot' part is in it as well ;D :lol
pipertotheend, can I respectfully ask that you upload your direct capture to Dime or Spanish City as an upgrade? The version that has been upped is a ridiculous sized re-encoded version. :(
I've now uploaded the whole thing (in one video) here:

Sure, I'm happy to do that, but I'm not sure where is best. It looks like Dime won't allow it, will Spanish City allow duplicate torrents?
Thank you! I am fairly certain Spanish City will allow it as an upgrade - concerns have already been voiced about the quality of the current version, your direct stream will be the best available. :)

I've signed up there, but I'm still waiting for admin approval on my account before I can upload anything.
As a bonus, I'll include Money For Nothing from the Jools show (the only song broadcast that isn't on the Night in London DVD).
Total size is around 1.75 GB.

Mark Knopfler. Remember him? The nice guy from Tyneside who fronted the band that never earned the same sex appeal of its eye-liner wearing, new romantic counterparts, but still managed to become one of the biggest stadium-fillers of the 1980s?
Dire Straits sold more than 120 million albums, yet few of us admitted to owning one even back then, and no one since has stopped to ask what came of its four band members. Did they burn out, fade out, die out?
This, the latest show in the Legends series, asked that question and we discovered that Knopfler broke up the band not because of their waning popularity, but the opposite. They got bigger and bigger, said Knopfler, until he just didn't want to play any more. What he loved was the "circus" camaraderie of the tours, which could not be sustained by the "big events" they became.
Knopfler appears now, at 61, an unchanged man, musically speaking, still obsessed with his Fender Stratocaster and still going strong as a solo artist, but he is so physically transformed that he can walk the streets without being recognised. The Bjorn Borg headband and sleeveless T-shirts have long gone and his scraggy shoulder-length hair is reduced to white head-stubble. We saw him lost in the crowds of a Lisbon caf
I'm thinking of either Demonoid or thepiratebay.org. Probably the latter, as it doesn't require membership to download. Any thoughts?
