Over Christmas I watched the "Legends" documentary on Herb Alpert.

It was an excellent piece of television. Very well made and the great thing about the BBC is that there are no commercials, meaning that an hour documentary is actually an hour. You can get a lot of material into that length of time so this should be quite in depth.

More info from MKNews:

NEW TV DOCUMENTARY: The new hour long Planet North TV documentary, Mark Knopfler - A Life In Songs, made for the BBC will be broadcast at 21.00 (GMT) on BBC4 on the 28th of January. Looks like they are set to show lots of MK next Friday night. They are airing the documentary twice in three hours and following it with the 1996 Jools Holland Later Special programme. They will then be repeating A Life In Songs three more times over the course of the weekend. (Updated: 20/01/11)

It seems very interesting.

Hi knopflerfan,   Yes, it's a shame, but the programme is only 70 mins long and SOS would take up too much of the programme.  I would happily sacrifice a couple of the other songs to make room for it though!   I just don't understand why they said that it would be played!    That's just typical of the BBC!   Maybe they will alter the playlist - fingers crossed!   ;)

Hello superval, I agree with you and I would quite happily 'drop a couple' in favour of SOS but I don't think it's going to happen but you never know?!! I shall personally look forward to whatever IS played though!!

From the RADIO TIMES 22-28 January

MARK KNOPFLER: A LIFE IN SONGS
9.00pm BBC4

MUSIC This agreeably laid-back biography charts the rise of the Dire Straits frontman, from Tyneside teen guitar obsessive to unit-shifting stadium sultan.   The tale is told mostly in the words of the level-headed and unassuming man himself, now in his sixties, as footage of the big-hair-and-headband era is woven with clips of his recent folk-rock collaborations.

Knopfler's days as a sensitive soundtrack scribe (Local Hero, Cal, The Prciess Bride) are sadly under-explored, but where the programme really scores is in the off-the-cuff, front room performances and charmingly prosaic stories about the origins of songs and riffs ("I fiddle about with the amp").

How the master guitarist developed his distinctive growling vocals is never answered, although the confession "Bob Dylan changed it all for me" may have a bearing.

Just the sort of high quality Documentary that Mark is deserving of. Charting many aspects of his incredible journey so far. Mark is a very humouress man indeed. Yes, totally agree can anyone who thinks Mark is retiring any time soon, put that myth to bed now!  There really is not another artist in the world who is as passionate with all aspects of writing and recording music as Mark. I look forward to many more awesome years ahead.

Super, super, super.  I was expecting a bunch of the same old clips and interview bits we've seen over the years... not only were there new things to see (old photos, especially!) but it was nice that the filmmakers put in some of the absolute best bits of live footage, and not the obvious choices.   Loved the way R&J from Alchemy jumpcut into R&J from the last tour... wow.  I felt old, but wow.  :)

My favorite moment:  "I don't think you do necessarily know which song is better than another, they're just different.  They're like people and you have to do the best thing by them, and you do the best thing by them almost like a little person.  Then they grow up, you do the best thing, they are the boss - and then they walk away from you.  When they're recorded, off they go and they have their life..."  Wow, huh?   :)

It was absolutely amazing, watching the young Knopfler via old family photographs turn into the legend that he is!! I absolutely loved the 'unplugged' versions of various songs being played at British Grove and then the song would merge into the one played on the 'Get Lucky' tour... Some lovely footage of the 'Get Lucky' tour rehearsals too and just to confirm I can do DVD copies for those who would like them. I want NO money just a contribution towards postage.

Just watched the first 2 parts as well.
Very nice the see photos never seen before, to hear Mark talk about his parents, and, above all, to hear him talking about the Spanish City and TOL which he does not play anymore but which obviously he has not disowned !
I am shomehow (so far) a bit disappointed with the live footage, it is almost all taken from official DVDs: Alchemy, On the Night, RLRR... except for "Going Home" with Henk Marvin in Wembley 85 ! which is telling us one interesting thing: BBC still has the Wembley'85 tapes ! so, please, BBC, go and release this gem ! Best versions ever of SoS, BiA (very rocking), Going Home, TOL, PI.... and the one and only video version of MTS ! Please ! :)

MFN was played, which wasn't on the DVD!    The original television programme was 2 hours long and last night's programme was 70 mins!   Obviously, something had to go and  SOS was too long!    Anyway I already transferred my VHS to DVD, but it would have been nice to have had a better recording.

Thanks Superval ! It would be nice to see MFN, it don't think this version is available on Youtube.
I doubt, though, that it would be nearly as nice as the Montserrat version one year later, with Eric Clapton and Sting at the RAH - this one is an absolute killer for me !
Do you know what the hell they were thinking when they removed SoS and MFN from the DVD ?? Fear of competing with the "Live Aid" DVDs (released at the same time) which featured these two songs ? (awsome version of SoS with sax, so-so version of MFN with a less-than-inspired Sting)

There was big talk about this decision when the release was made. I think the DVD had the focus on MK's solo stuff because  "A Night in London" was released in 1996 to push the Golden Heart album. So the decision to take off some older stuff is not too strange. Also I remember that it was said that Mark was not happy with Sultans from that night because of a mistake in the beginning.. I could have lived with that mistake on a DVD for sure.

I am eagerly waiting for part 3/4 and 4/4 on YouTube from the documentary right now...

But what was released in 1996 was the VHS tape, -not- the DVD (it would take another 3 years at least for DVDs to come...), and the VHS tape *does* have MFN and SoS ! The DVD was released in 2004 - I really doubt it aimed at boosting the sales of an album released 8 years earlier, the thing to push at the time would have been Shangri-La... :)
Can't see any mistake at the beginning, but this would explain why Mark wanted it removed... anyway, the Live Aid version is awsome on DVD, don't you think ? not as good as Wembley 85, but still very nice. And all this mess on stage... these were the days :)

It's amazing how the show completely omitted the LOG album when taking us through the DS catalogue.  It also skipped rather quickly through his solo career but the whole show could've lasted two hours as far as I was concerned.  In any event I thought it was a very good documentary, possibly the best ever;  I've never seen Mark as open regarding his family or early life before.

It would have topped it all off had they shown the Wembley '85 show afterwards instead of the rather depressing, uninspired "Later" show but c'est la vie.

I was able to watch TV yesterday evening and loved the documentary with so many beautiful songs, to see Mark talking about his life and singing and playing in the studio. In my opinion this was one of the best documentaries!

Then I want to say THANK YOU pipertotheend for uploading the videos of the documentary, that was really great! It is a pity that part 3 can't be seen yet, but perhaps we can in future! I already posted the videos at my page at Audiocandy.com and am sure visitors from around the world will like watching as much as I do! Here is the link: http://www.audiocandy.com/mdat/Fieneke2/forum/Mark_Knopfler_and_Guy_Fletcher/Mark_Knopfler_documentary_BBCFour_%28UK%29!!_1295799448

Btw IF you are there, then don't forget to watch all the beautiful pictures I took during the concerts in Brighton and Amsterdam! You can find them by pushing the "photos" button on top of my forum!  :P

What a documentary, what an artist, it feels so great to be one of Mark's fans and to be a part of this wonderful group of fans! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/Fieneke2/Emoticons/Danceandsing-s.gif)

It's now risen to 8 and Get Lucky and BIA are in the top 20!   :D
And if you look at concerts on video, RLRR DVD is #2 (just behind Crossroads), Alchemy DVD is #7 ! Not too bad, given the fact that Pink Floyd's fabulous "live in Pompeii" is #20 ! :)

That is exactly what I thought! I would love to have an official release from the Wembley '85 show, it is my absolute all-time-ever-favorite-Dire-Straits-piece!

I've always wondered where the rest of the show went to.  I mean surely they recorded the whole show, so it must have been on soundboard quality recording at the time?

Also evident is the small cut in TOL at the band intoductions but all in all I totally agree that this is a memorable musical performance.

Yeah, I remember thinking "So Far Away" was song No. 3 on the set list at that time, and Mark was already heavily sweating when he announced "Everybody in?". Ride Across The River from that night must have been fabulous...

Thanks for all your messages!

I did upload part 3, but it's been blocked on copyright grounds (those in the U.S. seem to have been blocked from watching parts 2 and 4 as well).
No surprise really, I suppose this was only to be expected.

I'm working on putting it up on another site (dailymotion.com...thanks for the tip Justme) and will post the links here when they finish uploading.

If nobody beats me to it, I will certainly do that as well. The reason I'm uploading to YouTube/Dailymotion is for those who can't (or don't want to) download a whole DVD to watch this. Only those in the UK can see it on the BBC site, but hopefully everyone will be able to watch on Dailymotion. Fingers crossed.

Please ! :)

Yes, I was surprised by this. I could be wrong, but I think this is the first time the Wembley '85 footage has appeared in a documentary. It looked better than the "bootleg" versions that are floating around on DVD too. Probably the last we'll see of it, as usual.  :lol

Just watched part 3, thank you so much Pipertotheend !
So, we got more excerpts from Wembley 85, the rest being taken from well-known DVDs...
I think the documentary is worth for Mark's words and explanations; I am somehow disappointed with the live footage, nothing really new, and above all by the omissions: not a word about LoG ! Regarding a DVD-release as an uncut version, I suppose that if the rights to the documentary still belong to the producer (and not the BBC, they would only have (limited?) broadcasting rights), it could be possible.

Any news about the tracker? If it's not back up soon, I'll find somewhere else to upload the DVD. I'm thinking of either Demonoid or thepiratebay.org. Probably the latter, as it doesn't require membership to download. Any thoughts?

By the way, great news about the ratings. Perhaps BBC4 will take the hint and start broadcasting more MK (hopefully starting with a show from the last tour...the footage in the documentary was tantalising and looked superb).

Demonoid is good but as you say, you need an invite, so pirate bay might be better, but I expect the tracker will be back up soon one way or another. :)

And yes, the ratings are hopefully a wake up call for all at the BBC MK is still relevant!

Mark Knopfler. Remember him? The nice guy from Tyneside who fronted the band that never earned the same sex appeal of its eye-liner wearing, new romantic counterparts, but still managed to become one of the biggest stadium-fillers of the 1980s?

Dire Straits sold more than 120 million albums, yet few of us admitted to owning one even back then, and no one since has stopped to ask what came of its four band members. Did they burn out, fade out, die out?

This, the latest show in the Legends series, asked that question and we discovered that Knopfler broke up the band not because of their waning popularity, but the opposite. They got bigger and bigger, said Knopfler, until he just didn't want to play any more. What he loved was the "circus" camaraderie of the tours, which could not be sustained by the "big events" they became.

Knopfler appears now, at 61, an unchanged man, musically speaking, still obsessed with his Fender Stratocaster and still going strong as a solo artist, but he is so physically transformed that he can walk the streets without being recognised. The Bjorn Borg headband and sleeveless T-shirts have long gone and his scraggy shoulder-length hair is reduced to white head-stubble. We saw him lost in the crowds of a Lisbon caf

This is the DVD upgrade that some have requested. It also includes MFN from the Jools show.

This version is smaller, but also better quality. It has not been re-encoded, this is a direct DVB capture. The other version currently available is a re-encoded recording from a DVD-recorder. This new one is the exact digital video/audio as broadcast by the BBC and should therefore be the best quality available.

The only possible upgrade would be if "A Life in Songs" is repeated on BBC2 (as often happens with BBC4 stuff). A BBC2 capture would have a higher bitrate and would not have a logo on the screen. However, this probably won't happen for a while yet, and it may not happen at all. For now, this torrent should be the best version.

Mark Knopfler
A Life in Songs
BBC FOUR
January 28th 2011

Mark Knopfler is one of the most successful musicians in the world. During the past 30 years he has written
and recorded over 300 songs including some of the most famous in popular music.

In this in-depth documentary he talks about how these songs have defined him and how they have been influenced
by his own life and roots. It features previously unseen photographs from his personal collection and
omprehensive footage spanning his career from a struggling musician playing in pubs in Leeds in the 1970s,
to the record-breaking success with Dire Straits and his world tour as a solo artist.

Looking back over the 25 years since he wrote the iconic Brothers In Arms album, the documentary takes an
affectionate look at how this formidable, creative man has operated as a musician for three decades and how
he continues to do so as a solo artist who is as much in demand as ever.

Looked up Mark Strong but I haven't seen anything he's been in.

Got Piper's version, beautiful quality! And nice to have MFN too. :)

Thanks again!

I enjoyed the program very much.    Interesting that there was not a mention of the Cafe Racers or the 2002 summer charity concerts.    Except for Get Lucky, the solo career was downplayed.     Not complaints.   Just observations.    Obviously, for MK, it needed to be a two hour program.  :)

I'm glad it's OK!

Enzo, thanks for the cover, very nice!

Also, thanks to everyone who stuck around to seed the DVD. Unlike Spanish City or Dime, there doesn't seem to be a ratio system or incentive to carry on seeding at BTJunkie or Pirate Bay, so it's great that so many have stayed to help share.

Hi dusty!  Are you seeding at the moment, because I looked and it says seeders 0, peers 0!    :-\

I know someone who is wanting to download, but the tracker isn't accepting new members at the moment and this would be a good option.    ;)

At work right now, so computer is off. But if they can be patient I will definitely seed to them later, tell them just to sit tight, it's worth the wait!

OK, my ratio on this is now at 11 and I'll probably jump off soon, so get it now if you still want it. :)
