Thanks Marky49. I hope she had the chance to record the show ;)

Wow! I'd love to hear I Used To Could live! One of my favourites. . Kingdom of Gold is boring on the album, and the only interesting thing about it are the cool backing vocals. I wonder if Guy is doing them all alone...
And I wonder if Mark changed or extended the Strat Solo on Redbud Tree!
Please, Markywes, report! Pleeeeez!

And please Dennis and Marijn, report from yesterday as well!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting SETLIST!!!
Hi,
Not a bad set list at all, but I prefer the set played yesterday. Three new on the list......
I think that " Corned Beef " and " Yon Two Crows " should be there instead of " Cleaning " and " Kingdom ". I don't miss " Miss You Blues ", and I'm glad to see " BIA " on the list tonight :)
-
Three songs played both nights that I could live without ::)
1) What It Is ( maybe best MK song ever, but never really good played live )
2) Song For Sonny Liston
3) Daddy's Gone To Knoxville

Hi all,
Any record from yesterday And today?

I tend to be contradictory about Privteering for some weeks now. Some day I like this, some day I hate the other. Seems to proof that it is really a strong album! :lol What I know for sure is that Corned Beef City is not at the right place and really spoils the flow of music on the first album, and that I still cannot love Blood And Water. The rest ...changes. Even After The Beanstalk made some impression on me last night. Mark sings it rather good I thought.
Kingdom of Gold, yes, it is not bad. But not a good opener for the second CD. But who cares, I have all 24 tracks in a row on my stick..
Just thought about this:
At the 2007 KTGC promotion shows, he played True Love, Secondary Waltz, Let It All Go (and fuzzy remember The Fizzy?) and later on tour The Fish And the Bird... that are 4 (5) songs from the complete album... With Get Lucky, he promoted 5 songs over all. So we have more new songs now already after the first two BD rehearsals. I think we are in for a treat next year! :D

I have it on shuffle, including all the bonus tracks, so the sequence of the tracks doesn't matter to me. That way, I have a surprise every time! :)
I didn't like "Blood & Water" at first, but it has grown on me and I love the final solo very much.
-
That shuffle thing might be a good idea. I guess this album has more a "collection" character than a concrete playing-list sort of style. So I think I will try that, too!
LE
-
I think that the sequence of the songs matters... I try to listen to the whole album in the correct order every time I can... although I skip some of the songs (redbud, hot or what, miss you blues, kingdom of gold, blood and water...)
-
Btw:
Guy explained something about the special sound of Gator Blood - with drums, room, mic's, etc. I did not really understand it. Was MK standing next to the drums when they recorded them and sang through the drum mic's? Or what did Guy exactly mean with his explanation? ???
LE
-
"Gator Blood" is the only one I'm skipping at the moment - at least until the screechy guitar makes its entry! It's a good song though, so maybe I should persevere until I'm beaten into submission! ;)
-
Goodness - MK must really like Marbletown....its getting rolled out a lot on recent tours....not one of my personal favourites....but hey ho.... :P
-
I agree with LE about Kingdom only more so - it's a load of rubbish! Also Schmonka about Marbletown. I don't know how many time I can patiently sit through yet another one. Never liked it the first time and I like it a lot less now. Album version is best.
A shame they weren't treated to SFA last night. Don't tell me they're bored of playing it!
-
Marbletown is probably my favourite song on the RPD album, but I loved the 2010 live version too, probably moreso than 2011, but then I liked everything better in 2010!
I thought Kingdom of Gold was a bit boring to begin with, but the outro is wonderful.

Some more pictures on Guy's diary page. :)

really liked and still love marbletown, the whole going silent thing and then that crescendo, brilliant.

Hi,
It's always interesting to read the opinions here. Very often really different view on Mark's work. :)
I think that " Marbletown " is much better played live. The album version is a skipper for me. The song " Kingdom Of Gold " is maybe boring, but I don't think it's a weak song.
I like the guitar work on " Blood And Water ", in fact one of my faves right now. Songs that I hear every time is at this list.
1 ) Redbud Tree
2) Haul Away
3) Privateering
4) Corned Beef City
5) Go, Love
6) Yon Two Crows
7) Got To Have Something
8) Blue Bird
9) Submariner ( Still the strongest track on the album for me ) ;D
10) Blood And Water
11) Today Is Okay
The last 9 tracks is played more rarely over the last week or two. :-\
( I haven't placed the cool smiley at Bluebird and I can't remove it )

As our chairman...
Do you have located recordings of this shows?
;D
Come on man, we need them, you know it!!!

LE
I might be mistaken but my understanding is that they tried and used several different approaches during the recordings. Some songs such as Dream of the Drowned Submariner and Kingdom of Gold seem to have had the instruments recorded separately. Others like Blood and Water and Haul Away sound live but in separate rooms. Gator Blood, if I got it right, was recorded with no isolation at all, the wolf pack playing together in the same room, each mic picking up a bit of everyone's outcome and so on. That's old school sort of recording, which I particulary dislike...

Re the setlists, Sonny Liston, Knoxville and Marbletown make no sense to me anymore.

Re the setlists, Sonny Liston, Knoxville and Marbletown make no sense to me anymore.
Most interesting to me was that Knoxville made it into the set both nights. Makes sense that it's the sort of song to be played once every three or four shows, but looks like it may be a staple on this tour. I quite like it.
-
I think that " Knoxville " is close to " Beanstalk " on the new album. Songs who haven't a big apeal to me ::)

Yes, kind of bluegrass. Beanstalk is okay I think but Knoxville is much better.
-
Re the setlists, Sonny Liston, Knoxville and Marbletown make no sense to me anymore.
To my knowledge, "Daddy's Gone......" has only been played live a couple of times - the first night in Amsterdam 2008 and, according to Mossguitar, in Oslo 2006, so it hasn't exactly been overplayed. I like it! :)
-
Sonny Liston is played for Bob because it's supposed to be his favourite isn't it?
Marblebore is played to showcase the other band members (if the audience can stay awake long enough)!
Knoxville deserves another chance.
-
Knoxville sounds very cabaret too me, almost parodical. Maybe it's the new Done With Bonaparte?
Come to think of it - Dylan has a few songs that are in the style of Knoxville, doesn't he?
-
Hi,
Just a few words from me us I'm waiting for boarding...I shoot a car race at Nuerburgring tomorrow.
I met Paul outside the studio and had a quick chat. The complex is an old factory place, in a not so nice area. Guy, Mike and Richard said hello when we were brought in to the rehearsal room and I was standing right infront MK, little bit to the right. No photos allowed and we were watched tight!
The sound was bad at the beginning, MK's guitar very loud, his voice too low. It improved over time.
My favourite was 'kingdom' great playing of MK. Mike also played guitar and drums, Knoxville not my cup of tea.
Guy lost a lot of weight, nice haircut and shaved! :)
-
I don't want to sound negative all the time but I'm not keen on too many multi-instumentalists; jack of all trades, master of none springs to mind. These guys can't be word class at playing everything, maybe they should just stick to what they specialise in or maybe Mark should just not use them in alien positions. There is a great drummer and a pretty good guitarist in the band so why is Mike playing drums and guitar?
The factory site was, according to Guy the old Peek Freans biscuit factory! Inventors of the Twiglet (yuk), garibaldi and the bourbon cream among others. They don't trade under that name in the UK any more, I think it's United Biscuits.

I wouldn't want to sound negative either but this drum thing sounds weird indeed. First Danny no more, then Mike playing drums on some songs apparently
-
I'm sure Mike plays drums on only something really rudimentary. Plus, Mark wouldn't allow any half-assed playing, so they have to have a certain standard.

Having heard John and Mike play outside of MK shows, I would never in a million years call them jack-of-all-trades! They are very accomplished musicians and masters of the instruments they play!
-
Thank marky49 for your quick review. Glad you got a very good position enjoying the gig. It made me recheck the pics Guy posted. :)

I can fully understand where you're coming from and I've no problem with Mike playing whistles and pipes, John playing fiddle and cittern because they are in the same musical "locality." However, drums require Mike to use his passport! Just completely out of his comfort zone and not the style of musical instrument he is good at playing. The same when John goes for a wee shot on the guitar.
-
i now believe the first show was not recorded , at least not by the people we hoped for, as security was simply too severe (once inside)

I'm pretty certain it would have been more of a fun thing rather than serious drumming - wasn't there a washboard somewhere too! :)

Probably because there wasn't really a stage as such or any kind of proper barrier between the audience and the band and expensive gear. You know how crazy MK fans are! ;)
-
I can understand security when it comes to the musicians and gear, and the venue itself, but what I dont get is why forbid recordings or photos, if that was the case, specially in that intimate venue, because sometimes venues forbid recordings even the artists allow the fans to record, which I dont get at all...
I recall reading Guy telling that the management had take note of all the recordings they made during the past and suggested that something might be happening with them... Not only we still dont have any news about it but also we dont have any news about this two recent shows or the upcoming ones...
They had demonstrated that the unmixed and direct soundboard feed is good enough (the extra tracks from the 3 cd edition of Privateering sounds far better than the mixed Madrid 2010...), so they can do it pretty quickly and easily as they have a digital store etc etc etc etc
Nevermind...
-
I can understand that our amiters didnt recorded the show because of the security but...
What about some reviews? I read comments about a dashboard that I dont understand, and it would be great to read in which tracks Richard plays Pedal Steel Guitar...
Etc etc
-
Marky49 also stated that she liked Mark's playing on Kingdom of Gold. Now I wonder, what exactly did he play on that? There is hardly no lead guitar on that track on the album, is it?

They don't want us to record, they don't want us to attend any of the warm up gig, either because we are not UK-resident or because there was no competition in our country. Not enough, they don't want to tour in our country next year.
What are they afraid of ? Our presence ? Too bad, we've decided to have some fun next year. ;)
-
The washboard can also be seen in Guy's diary!
On the right of this photo, is it Mike?
-
What a very low stage... If you were in the firsts rows it had to be great, but if you were in the middle or behind a tall person... No way to see anything during the whole concert... :(

I think that " Knoxville " is close to " Beanstalk " on the new album. Songs who haven't a big apeal to me ::)
I've been noticing this similarity too. Otherwise, I like both of them a lot
-
In both shows there were just two songs from the DS era. Is it possible that we are witnessing a new path here? Or these setlists don't represent at all a microworld of next year's tour?
About the songs themselves, I always thought that I was the only one who don't like the live versions do What it is, and now I read a post with the same opinion. Got a little "happier", I'm not alone. Actually, I've always considered the studio versions of What it is and Marbletown far better than the live recordings. Same with Boom like that.
And Kingdom of gold, forgive me the ones who like it, but it's almost all the time a skipper. Would'nt be on my setlist. Radio city serenade, that would be a thumbs up for me.
-
I find it hilarious that Guy has these shows on his site listed as "secret shows." He then goes on to say they are situated in the Tower Bridge Business Complex and gives us the dates and pictures too! Top secret! :lol

What is it about this song? It seems to be one of the most enduring hold-overs from the DS years, but I don't understand why. It never had the mass appeal that SOS, TOL or R&J had so I wonder why it's held on this long. And in MK's catalog of songs, an argument could be made that it is one of his weaker offerings. So, go figure! I'm just hoping that when MK and crew come across the pond to jam with BD, that he leaves SFA, so far away!

YES, it was indeed played in Oslo! (I don't know why you say it wasn't. Were you there?) But it was in 2008, not 2006. I just hit the wrong key on the keyboard. Sorry.

I will go to the Amsterdam show in may 2013. But..., about "So far way", I also wonder what it is about this song. An alright song in my book, but not one of Marks best.
I do however...., hope that Mark still plays "Romeo and Juliet" once in a while. That is still a great song and one of my personal favorites. The solo versions are even better than the Dire Straits versions from long ago (Well, I think so....)

Tastes are quite different I suppose. I am really fed up with R&J. I have heard it over and over, and is not doing it for me anymore. On the other hand So far away has a more spare sound, an "american" production and a cathy guitar riff, that i keep enjoy listening to, no matter the simple lyrics. Grom all the BiA singles, it is the only one that I would intentionally listen, (maybe BiA too). But like I said tastes are different.
-
At the end of the show, when "ze running" took place and all the get-a-lifers stand right in front of the stage, right in front of HIM, as close to him as never before, and he sings YOU'RE SO FAR AWAY from me, that's... transcendental... :o ;D

Every time we discuss set-lists prior to a new tour and which songs we would like to be dropped, I always hope that SFA will be one of those and groan a little at the prospect of hearing it again, but when I am at the concert, in front of MK and we are all singing along and swaying, I think it is wonderful and a great encore song! :D I expect it will be there again in 2013 and probably on the BD/MK tour too. ;)

amsterdam 2008 was a real joy to experience!! i was soooo surprised that night..
YES, it was indeed played in Oslo! (I don't know why you say it wasn't. Were you there?) But it was in 2008, not 2006. I just hit the wrong key on the keyboard. Sorry.
coz i checked the on every bootleg site, and also looked at 2008. Must have overlooked

That is quite alright. ;)

It's just that only recently I am re-discovering Mark and his music, so I didn't realize he played R&J quite often during his last tours. I did see some solo versions on youtube and thought those versions were really better than the old DS versions. I will see Mark in Amsterdam in may 2013, it will be the first time I will see him live again in a long, long time.

Ha ha ;D The first time ever I saw Mark live was already way after the "headband" days.
