Het JB, I totally agree that London Pride is excellent.
Colin (The other half of 'Superval') will agree with me that 'London Pride' bought from the 'Stanhope Arms' before an MK 'RAH' Gig is even better! ;)

Looks like from the Privateering van, pretty nice!

Just got an advance copy of the entry from Guy and he says that Mark has promised neither he nor the band shall frequent the local during the recording sessions. During the last month he has had the plumbers in at BG and they have fixed the taps with a direct feed to the London Pride brewery! ;D

Geez, didn't realise the temperance society were on the case!
The Beatles, Hendrix, Floyd et al were making some of the greatest music ever while high on mind altering drugs, but DMG objects to a few pints in the evening! :)

Nah, Mark has been promoting the vinyl re-issues, saying " I know there's no extra tracks on these albums, but I'm very excited to finally feel my old records weigh 180g"

Actually I still have hopes based on that we know nothing, that the band is coming soon to complete the recordings. The very little we know is MK is working with Guy alone from last months of 2013, with a little break on november for the US dates, and Guy had been quite silent in his forum during that period, what suggest they were working very hard.
My guess (and wish) is that they were working very hard because they want to have the songs shaped to start recording with the band soon, and follow the usual MK schedule (recording january/february, releasing september, promoting the record and selling tickets october/november, touring from march/april next year until july/august)
Actually is more my wish than my guess LOL

Doesn't mean any of them are any good! To be serious, we don't know how many he usually writes before deciding to discard some of them for an album. It probably won't be a number but rather an amount measured in quality instead.
Sometimes I wish Privateering had been a single CD album as there are a lot of skippers for me and songs not up to his standards. I'd rather the new album be a single CD of high quality songs and doubt very much it'll be a double again even with 50 songs.
-
dmg, one might get the idea you got of Privateering as just a single CD with just the highlights, but!!! What if he left out the good ones and not the skippers... and the good ones get lost in the vaults... Think of that. This is what drives me crazy when thinking of not releasing a double CD! He was in the "Blues Mood" for most of the recording sessions, so it could easily have been that he released a Blues CD. And for me most of the Blues tracks are among the weaker ones....
On another note: Did anyone else think that the long preparing time in the studio with just Mark and Guy and with no diary entry could mean that they work on a solo MK accoustic album? Or is this idea too far fetched?
-

Don't think so. It's just the way it works. This time it's separated in 3 parts: september, november and now. So I expect some musicians flying in within'a couple of months.

I think Guy said one time that MK was not very keen on making a acoustic solo album..

Well, it sounds good to me. 8)
8 months to wait then 7 months to make plans.
The next show is almost there ;D

NOT the same for me but I have to say the geat song/skipper ratio is good. ;)
Anyway, Mark please go ahead, whatever you do is great. We need the tour dates in september :wave
-
I would had splitted the record into the bluesy songs, and the rest, and it would had been perfect for me. Maybe the mix of songs is the problem.
The bonus songs are good to me too.

I think this is more and more unlikely, specially with the economical crisis in some of the European countries, more and more promoters wait to check how other countries sales are going, how many dates are being announced and some other promoters simply do their best to find financement, sometimes they do it sooner, sometimes later, sometimes some shows had to be cancelled or moved to other places...
The last Spanish tours had some dates that were moved from one city to another, and even in danger of being cancelled, but luckily the number of dates never changed thanks to a new promoter, that its doing his work really good.
-
I have to add that I think Privateering is excellent and with this album Mark is really showing us what a songwriter he is as well as being a very special guitarist too. No skippers whatsoever on the album as all 20 + the additional tracks have all got their place. I actually thought Mark said he had around 80 songs on file so there is bound to be some beauties there!!
Please no, not an acoustic album -Admittedly Hank Marvin did an excellent Acoustic album (The Guitar Player) but it's certainly not my favourite.....
Must be some movement on Guy's page soon.....

Alas, I think you are right but wouldn't it be good - especially for those planning lots of concerts.
-
Oh yes, it would be not good, perfect!
Last tour I wanted to attend the first show, but the first show was announced very after many batch of italian, british, german and other european dates were announced, so it was very difficul to know which one was the first date until all the dates were announced, and made the statment that that was all (that it wasnt, as another dutch and spanish date were announced later)
-
Oh, the tension ;)

I bet there will be a pic with a lot of guitars!!! ;D

The day I read this thread, I dreamt about the new album. In my dream, I listened to a song, and it was superb, a midtempo guitar-driven rock, like, let me see, "When it comes to you", not too country, though.
And I remembered, when I woke up, that I had a similar dream when I listened to "Calling Elvis" in advance of the album release, back in 1991. I even dreamt about the booklet artwork, which indeed was very similar to the final look. The font I dreamt about was courier new.
Nice to have the same feeling again, almost 23 years after.

true, the more songs, the merrier, i'd rather skip ten songs then having to miss out on a blind willie mctell like song that never made it to the record, coz the artist thinks differently from the way we think

And if no entries create such a ramble here, I can only imagine what would happen if he starts writing! Come on boys and girls. Behave, and go down to your local pub for a pint or two. Ask the DJ to play Kill to get Crimson album. It will sound new...

No idea how you all see it but I have the feeling that Guy seems somewhat annoyed that the recordings are progressing SO slow, at least I recall him making comments about that. Also it seems that first came his cook book, and the attempt to sell some more around christmas, then the Blues Club gig was more important... First diary entry was announced for November, don't forget... ;D
Not that I really care that much about it, but I remember him being a little bit more enthusiastic about his recording diaries in the past...

I think at this stage Guy is in between a rock and a hard place; Mark wants an honest opinion but if Guy says they're rubbish he'll get his marching orders! I suppose he'll have to give Mark a politicians "answer" to the ones he doesn't like! :lol

Or maybe give the Greek politicians answer:" Only one more year of austerity" . I believe that we hardly know how they work now. MK probably brings demos (rhythm and lyrics) and Guy tries some orchestration and if it works they patch up some licks left in the top shelf of the studio and some riffs left from sessions with others. ;D

John McC just tweeted his tour schedule with Mike McG. Till mid March this doesn't leave a stretch of two coherent weeks of possible recording time with MK. Somehow this troubles me a bit, because either the band recording starts very late compared to MK's ambitious start in the studio early last autumn or is it after all going into an acoustic direction? Is an autumn release date and therefore a 2015 tour in danger? What are your thoughts on this piece of news?
-
Here's John's list:
http://www.johnmccusker.co.uk/
I am going to three of his dates, TS at Liverpool on 4th Feb then Bury on 8th and Saltaire on 7th March.
There is a gap in his schedule after 8th March until his tour with Heidi Talbot in April.

Mark has recorded an album without John and Mike before. Can't remember when but I'm sure he has at some point in the past!
Seriously, they could always record their little bit later and then mix it in.
-
The next album may not be folky, so they may not be needed, but as dmg said, their parts could be mixed in later.
-
Although, together with Phil Cunningham, they are such a splendid folk section that they are used as "live" as possible.. Border Reiver, Before Gas & TV, Kingdom Of Gold.. all pretty sure recorded at a full session, not overdubbed later I am pretty sure...
One or two folk tunes would be enough for me. I guess we never will get a "pure" MK album that offers only one style, one direction. His albums are always a summary of all his usual styles..
LE

Let's hope for a less folky album this time.. I like his folk stuff, but not too much of it:-)

I also hope for a new direction without the folkies. He peaked on Get Lucky with that. Before Gas and Clyde are 2 of his most wonderful tunes for me, but enough is enough.

Perhaps a mixed bag again would suffice - something for everyone! ;)

I bet that folky stuff is played live together but added to the band mix. I mean that there is already drums, bass, guitars and keyboards recorded and then the folk section adds their part.

McCusker is touring with his wife and has no time for Mark's tour befor 29.04., Dutchessy.
I guess Pottel means that he secretly (same as me) dreams that the reason for the long silence on Guy's site is that the album is almost ready and will be released this spring (like ATRR) and could bring a tour already starting THIS April, not next year... but these are only dreams, because pre-sale should have started long since... :D ;D

I'd rather have the folky stuff ( HFB /YTC etc) than another heavily blues flavoured album. Marks best "blues" tracks are things like One World or I think I Love You Too Much. I didn't enjoy the "rootsy" blues on Privateering so much.

I watched the new year show at Hogmanay and John and Mike were there with Phil and Aly too (of course ;D). Then, later on I was surprised to see Heidi Talbot come on accompanied by the band! Unfortunately, I didn't rate her voice at all and neither did anyone else who was watching/listening.

Indeed. The band though were excellent, especially Phil and Aly who are Hogmanay staples!

Guy has just answered some questions in his forum. So no acoustic album as he mentioned Strats, Telecasters, Les Paul and other electric guitars as well as acoustics. He is talking also about a collaboration in BG studios :hmm I wonder if this is for the new MK album or another project. I suppose he will soon upload the first diary page.

Collaboration sounds like that MK is playing for someone else

dudes,
'little Joe'?? v 'Old fart' Gilmour!!
Like it or not but Bonamassa is the new Gilmour!
I will admit that I was very reserved about Joe but after seeing him 'Live' last year and watched/listened in depth to his material I have to say I'm hooked (and Mandy too). Therefore dare I say it but my Gilmour collection is well.and truly collecting dust!
Dont knock quality mr Pottel ;)

Remember on Privateering when Kim Wilson was invited to play we had an over indulgence of mouth organ on all the blues numbers taking over from any possibility of Knopfler guitar solos.

Maybe so and partly agree, but if you listen to Joe's playing and certainly at times there are some phrases in his playing when I think you can hear a bit of Gilmour??
Go listen and tell me what you think.....
-
I watched a gig from the Albert Hall recently and I was impressed, which surprised me as normally I get bored with the repetitiveness of the hlues. But I didn't really see the Gilmour connection.
Joe himself seems like a cool guy and posts regularly over at the Les Paul forum.

Oh well it must be us, only we can hear Gilmour through both Joe's sound and certain licks he plays!

I loved Kim Wilson's harmonica on Privateering and if MK made another blues album I would like Kim to join the band on tour. At the moment though I'm just looking forward to hearing something completely different on the new album. :)

Joe is surely the new Clapton, not the new Gilmour. :)
There is no new Clapton - there's only one God!
-
And who might that be? Cause Clapton has lost its deity status in the late 70ies... :lol
-
Thank the lord there is no new Crapton - one's bad enough! Thank goodness we have Joe as a young, enthusiastic alternative who is already a guitar god at the age of only 36!!
Poor Crapton looked lost when he and Joe played 'Further on up the road' at the RAH (2009) I don't reckon he'd seen/heard a guitar played so fast!! ;D

Old slowhand Clapton has given us at least half a dozen classic unsurpassed records (most of them within a band) and at least as many good solid solo ones to go down the rock ages. He is the ABC of rock, so even though I don't like his latest playing and records, he is to be treated with respect. Let's hope Joe makes as many classic records (his output is stunning as volume) although the vast competition and way of the music business is not very helpful anymore.
-
Certainly a tough old world out there for a guitarist these days but if its any indication, Joe is like MK busy recording then he is getting ready for a world tour. Joe it seems never stops! and I guess thats how you have to be to get noticed.
Mind you judging from the platinum sales of 'tour de force' he is getting noticed alright!!
anyway the thread has sidetracked somewhat so shall we start another thread for some serious bonamassa talk! on the general discussion?
-
As the original thread has been totally flooded with chat I wondered about keeping this particular 'new' thread for all the updates to go on as and when they appear and the other one for use for discussion about it?
Anyway the first entry is just about to be unveiled...... :clap :clap :clap :clap

Pottel or someone with authority - could you sticky this please....

Before you open it, which of Joe's albums are great to start with? Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated, since I don't have any of his records, only song here and there and what I have seen in youtube.

Well for a start you can download 'Dislocated boy' Live for free from Joe's homepage.
Personally I started with the 'RAH' 2009 Live album and then subsequently purchased all the studio/Live albums and boy are they good!
Maybe start with the studio albums 'Dustbowl' & 'Driving towards the daylight' to get an idea of where Joe is at!
)
The other albums in Joe's catalogue are:
Solo studio albums
A New Day Yesterday (2000)
So, It's Like That (2002)
Blues Deluxe (2003)
Had to Cry Today (2004)
You & Me (2006)
Sloe Gin (2007)
The Ballad of John Henry (2009)
Black Rock (2010)
Dust Bowl (2011) - Ruddy excellent!
Driving Towards the Daylight (2012) - Superb!
Live Albums
A New Day Yesterday Live (2002)
Shepherds Bush Empire (2007)
Live from Nowhere in Particular (2008)
Live from the Royal Albert Hall (2009)
Beacon Theatre: Live from New York (2012)
An Acoustic Evening at The Vienna Opera House (2013)
Give Joe a fair go - you might just enjoy him. Mind you to see him Live is another matter!!
-
Thank you so much for the detailed list! So his latest albums are the best? Wow, this is a rare case. Usually the raw, genuine, unique sound of each artist comes in his first albums. I will get back to you once I get them and listen to them. Thank you once again!

I have just found that the early albums are fine I was just thinking of introducing you to the material he is playing right now because it is mindblowing. By the way a JB thread has been started on 'General Discussion'
Try the Live album's as they are seriously good - check out the licks from the Gibson Bonamassa Gold top!
-
Or better clean up the Diary thread and put the Bonamassa posts together.. although commenting on every single diary entry also could be a solution..
There has always been chat more or less but it is obviously been captured by the Bonnamassa fraction heavily. ;D
Looking forward to a really great and BIG first entry after all those months waiting, Mr. Fletcher...

Nowt wrong with talking about JB - LE but of course in the right thread!! ;)
-
I'd merge this with the other thread and expect that the Jb conversations remains in the Jb threads (there are two at least) but it never works, LOL ;D
-
Please, May I ask you if you kindly move to the two Joe Bonamassa's thread to talk about him, and talk here about the 2014 diary?
A new thread about this topic was opened because this one has changed into JB, so now I am gonna merge both topics, so please, go to JB threads to talk about him, it doesn't matter to mention about him here, but lets try to focus.

Sorry Sir and actually totally agree!! Onto more important issues and the unveiling (soon) of the new MK Recording diaries!!!!! :wave
-
The fact that the first diary entry has the today date makes me feel even more nervous about it ;D
The delay posting that first entry was always a good sign for me, as i thought it might be because they were working really hard, and now, knowing the big amount and variety of guitars used, and that some guestS were at British Grove as well, yet to know if for MK record or for anothers artists, makes it even more exciting.
Im gonna add new names for the colaborations. David Crosby and Graham Nash. MK recorded guitar for one of the new Crosby songs, and we know that Crosby and Nash are recording with Gilmour, so, my guess is the connection could be there. Crosby goes to MK studio to met him in person and thank him for his nice playing, and ended singing backing vocals for MK ;D
Its another chance ;)

Yeah, the Crosby/Nash thing could definitely be a goer IMO; a favour in return for playing on mine.

Yep I'll go with that too - Gilmour too I wonder?

I wish but, apparently Mark and David are already friends, as It was mentioned by someone that MK got to know some speakers in Gilmours studio and bought some for British Grove, and Gilmour recorded parts of "on an island" at MK's studio, but they never did anything on each others records...
I really wish Gilmour and Knopfler do something together on their records, so lets see what happens ;)
-
Also another thing comes to mind...
What if MK is doing another "crimson"... I mean, like in that record, doing all guitars by himself, craft the biggest part of the song just himself and Guy, and then call Ian and Glenn to finish the songs, and the Macs and other guests to add details here and there...

I hope not.. Not my favorite the KTGC album.......

I agree although there are some decent tracks on there but alas a few 'skippers', but I presume jbaent was meaning in the sense of how that particular album was put together...

Yes, thats what I meant.
Anyway, I really love the Crimson record, its probably the one that I listen the most. In my humble opinion is very underrated, even by MK himself, many nice tracks there, being "Heart full of holes" one of my favourites.

I'd like to point out that I recently discover two cool facts about Kill To Get Crimson:

Yes, and as far as we know, its just Guy and MK right now...
I also expect, like LE, something unexpected, like Guy telling the band will be in London in one week to finish the record... I wish! ;D

I don't really see why; maybe more songs are being rejected so we get the cream of the crop on the album this time. Or perhaps they are trying harder to achieve perfection or more complicated arrangements. Personally I think this sounds good - I wouldn't want a record rushed out in a week like the Twisting EP back in '83.
-
Maybe we will get
an album with 8 tracks - each 7 to 9 minutes long with extended guitar solo and storming build-up final a new diary entry this weekend... :-X

I wonder, and I'm not sure about the response...
sometimes I think that it was great, 30 years, ago when you heard a record for the first time, without any info about it, only a discovering...
I remember the 1st time I heard the STP album. i had never heard any single before, a very few info about it, and.... WII, STP, Baloney.... wow !!!! I remember it very well ! I was blown away
after that, all albums had their recording diaries and discussions on the forum, so during the first listen, we already knew some infos about songs, had some clues about overall musical style, sometimes there were "wrong" clues....
Guy's diaries are fun, but sometimes it can gives you some hopes that never happens, and sometimes it spoils some surprises that could have been more fun at the first listen, if we didn't knew them IMHO
just my 2 cents
-
Oh who needs a new "Studio" diary anyway, now that we have, much more important, a new link to the "Native Roses (support us on kick starter)"
Seriously, could it be possible that Guy enjoys this thread and is trying to fool us? :hmm

The entry - when it does eventually come - is now bound to be a big disappointment to all of us! ::) ;D

Just found this on the John Mayer forum (http://johnmayer.yuku.com/topic/13652/the-random-JMc-thread-part-IV?page=85#.UueYv7TvLIU):
So, this singer shared this photo on her instagram, I think she is one of Eric Clapton's back up singers, she mentioned that she was in the studio singing for eric clapton, willie nelson, john mayer, mark knofler.

I think he's had a bet with Ianto that we can keep this thread going until March with daily comments about his diary without him updating it! :lol
-
Or maybe there is some serious trouble between them - maybe Mark and Guy are split up - or have some artistic disagreements. I hope not. But this is so unusual for Guy.... If he is not allowed to put the diary page online, he could have taken away the announcement, couldn't he? :think
Plus he isn't updating his forum at all at the moment. I sent him a (provoking) question about a possible release date last week or so, still no answer, also no other questions were answered. I am sure there are many!
I don't want to get worked up but this is really strange indeed. A small line: "sorry folks, no diary this time, too much work to do!" would do it for us.

Maybe he is so busy that he doesn't have time even for this little post.
Or maybe it is sort of a marketing trick.

I really think Guy is an internet addict (opposite to Mark) who delights in teasing and playing the 'look what I did today' thing. The forum proves his addictive personality, I find it strange that him and Mark have such a close relationship.
I bet Guy reads every thread on AMIT !
But then again, I'm probably wrong about everything.

There are similar gaps in the touring plans of EC (7 Mar - 27 Apr), John McCusker (9 Mar - 8 Apr), Willie Nelson (10 Mar - 27 Mar). Coincidence? :think

now that would be an interesting combination?
-
Guy Always says tours are planned almost 1 year before they really take off......
-
As I confess to beeing a real "MK-get-a-lifer" and as I can't wait for some substantial news from BG, here is my summary of the inbetween the lines info of Guy's answers:
About five months back from now on September 20th Guy confirmed being back in BG with Mark.
Never before has pre-production-work taken so extremly long, even if you take away the mini-US-tour, the Christmas break and the "distractions".
My first possible explanation of a MK solo accoustic recording with the help of Guy has become rather unlikely since Guy mentioned that Mark uses various electric guitars.
So why the long time with just the two of them? Maybe they prepare more than one project? A full MK recording and a film soundtrack or something similar (dream, dream little boy)?
As Guy said that the collaboration is more a guest appearance, the idea of another proper duet album like the one with Emily is also unlikely, but that would have been a good explanation for the long and killing secrecy on Guy's side which will last half a year in mid March!!!
Finally there are hints that their time in the studio will continue for quite some time: band members are touring in the spring, there has been only "a little discussion" about guest musicians and they "are not thinking that far ahead" as concerns an album release time frame. And if I am not mistaken, the recording of previous albums always had at least two seperate recording sessions with band members.
For me it all comes down to the nagging question: does this as of now already endanger a 2015 MK tour, given Marks traditional schedule of realease in September and tour in Spring or am I worrying tooooo much?
Your thoughts on this are highly appreciated!!
-
If we think in the usual MK schedule, the band might be now or next month if we expect a release in September and tour next year, but that looks unlikely with the info Guy gave us...
Maybe touring next year could be still possible, it happened with Emmylou cd that they release the cd and went on tour in two months or so, but with MK solo releases things always went different.
-

Thats before the usual MK schedule, that started with STP, since then, with the only exception of the Emmylou records, the schedule was always
- release in september
- promo in autumm
- tour starting spring next year, until summer
However, I always thought that they took too much time after finishing recording and releasing. I know that when the recording is finished, they have to compile, add overdubs, mastering, designing the cover, booklet, work on distributions etc for the release date... but, would ut be possible that the band comes in spring this year and release the cd in september this year?
I dont really know how all those works take, but if they were releasing in septemer because its the time that it takes... I dont expect a release this year, at least in september...
-
Mark was talking astonshingly open about his "60-song-book" with a lot of unreleased material. I was suprised about him mentioning that - together with his Privateering-interviews where he said that it was double just because of pure inspiration, we might expect a 3-CD-Box, or another double, and the long work in the studio might just be a result of MANY songs being recorded right now... ::)
LE
-
Maybe he is not recording a new cd... Maybe its just shaping into real songs some of that 60 songs from his laptop, for, lets say, the future ;D

GF: I AM working on GF 3 this week and it's all sounding good after a long hiatus.
So thery are busy... but he has time to work on his solo projects also? :hmm

I want a 4track release
telegraph tunnel planet sultans from on the night
I can pay any sum
everyone has his holy grail
mine would be the whole communique album in demo version (like WDYYG on MFN comp)
it does exist, as it's explained in the Oldfield book :
all songs, except Communique composed at Nassau, had been recorded as demos in London (I guess around octobre-november 78) and as they were very impressive, Beckett used to joke about them : "you already done the album in one take, we just have to do it again"

Well, the band did play songs like SHS and OUATITW on tour in 1978 so they would probably sound something along the lines of these arrangements. I think LW was played too, also slightly differently. Oh, and FMH at a faster pace from one show (can't recall right now). I reckon these demos would probably have these early arrangements.

FMH : Amsterdam Paradisio 23/10/1978
yes agree about arrangements.
we have all songs from the first album (except Lions) in demo version, so I find it would be great to have also the communique album (and well all albums... ;D)

Everything exist on demos, before they get to the studio to record the album, they have demos made before.
Mk and Guy are recording demos right now, when the band, or other musicians come to complete the songs, they are the record.
-
It would be interesting to hear demos of songs that got complex arrangements in the studio, like Ride across the river and such songs.
-
we know what Behind with the rent sounded like before the whole band came in and then it completely changed.

I think that in the case of Lions and Communique (the song), it's not sure that a demo recording exists
in both cases, the song was composed and written in the studio, during the album recording. So they rehearsed it, tried few things and then recorded it directly I believe.
It's a litlle bit different than demos completely recorded and "produced" almost like a released recording, like the case of 77 demos, or autumn 78 demos
of course now things are different, Guy and Mak can spent all the time they want in studio, so they can record and mix at many different stages during the album recording
Jimi Hendrix recorded tons of demos because he couldn't write his music, but I'm not sure it's the case for all artists all the time.
And it depends on what you call a "demo"
it can be rehearsal recorded, a jam recorded, a self-made recording in a hotel room, an alternate mix, only a different overdub, etc...
for example on "gloden demos", I make a difference between DWB or LOTW which are the final recording without lead guitar overdub, and no wonder he's confused or secondray waltz, which are works in progress, attemps, or whaterver you could call it, but all songs are under the name "demo"
here are "studio outtakes" from floyd' animals :
http://www.gilmourish.com/?p=4953 (http://www.gilmourish.com/?p=4953)
Someone could call them "demos", but it contains many final tracks from the final release, so it's not completely "demos" in the way I quoted the WDYTYG form the MFN comp which is a completely different recording from the Nassau sessions
-
Oh, to be a fly on the wall right now at BG - before Guy suggests to remove all the guitar solos to let the song "breathe" and then John and Mike come in and change them into a "Celtic Connections Take LSD" sound!
-

yes, maybe it would like listen to the Waters acoustic demo of Money, compared to the final mindblowing version on the album... :D

I agree with 3Strats on the blues stuff. I was so hoping he'd do a blues album in the direction of "I Think I Love You Too Much," but "Don't Forget Your Hat" didn't do it for me.

the best Mark's bluesy tone and playing is on bob's Change my way of thinking imho

Sonny Liston (live) and Junkie Doll (live in particular but also on the album) sound very well. On Privateering, Bluebird is the the best blues song. Simple but haunting.

in term of rhyhtm/groove/playing/sound/tone/arrangements, I prefer Blood and water
-
I'm not very fond of Blood and Water. Except for the chorus part with the water sound. I feel I "should" like it, but it just seems that we've heard songs like this many times before.

Hello!
bluebird... just mind blowing!!

agree. and bluebird, and blood and water and the privateering bonus songs.
-
I must confess that the first few months after its release, River Of Grog did not work for me, I did not like that song at all. But in the meantime, I really
LOVE it! His singing is great, the guitar sounds great, the melody is unusual, a little complicated and just creepy, great song!!!
I really thought if MK would ever do an album like this song, just the man and the guitar (and maybe sometimes an electric like on the Bonus-live-version of Baloney Again) it would be perfectly well for me!!
River of Grog.
Bluebird is a great blues track, also Today is Okay, but Got To Have Something is sometimes underrated. It is great, too, much better for to to listen to than the boring Kingdom of Gold... plus Jim is doing some great stuff there.

Gator Blood played live (late in the tour) is wonderful. I love this swamp rocky blues sound (could be a Tony Joe White song).
-
Indeed it is. I love the live versions, too, (my favourite is Padova) and think that the studio version lacks a cool intro. It is quite disturbing for me how the song starts on the album. Hope that GB makes it onto the next set lists.

Guy answered me to one question in his forum regarding if the band has been called for sessions, and he says that there is no dates for that yet, or something like that as I dont recall the exact answer and cant check it now...
Maybe we can forget about a 2015 tour... When I got his answer I checked the previous recording diaries and there is always a more or less long period of Mk and Guy alone, then the band comes, sometimes in two different periods, one around the end of the year, and another one at the beguining of next year, which is the release year...
So, if the MK musicians, that are the most busy musicians as they are working in tons of recordings in Nashville, were not called to any date yet, maybe this is gonna be more slower than we thought...
Recordings with the band around fall/winter 2014
Final recordings during the beguining of 2015
Release in september 2015
Tour starting spring 2016
Check previous recording diaries and you will see that this fits better with MK routine, unfortunatly for us.
-
I'm not totally convinced that there are no dates fixed. Even if band comes in in fall/winter the dates must have been organised. I'm still hoping that the band meets around 10th march til first week of April. We will see...

Presuming that John & Mike are to be on board again, John's tour with Mike and John Doyle will be ending on 8th March and resuming on 9th April with Heidi Talbot, so that would fit OK, just so long as the rest of the band are free too!
-
That implies that Guy lied to me with his answer, because if the band was called, he could say "yes, but I can

Good point jbaent! That's why I tend to plan anythyng only when I know exactly when things will be. I know many people already planned the whole 2015 for MK tour without any trace of official information, so I think they are all crazy.
-
Sure we are crazy. I don't plan anything for 2015 till I know what's going to happen with MK. Then everything will be scheduled around the tour (I think we still have a good chance it will take place).
-
dude, a 3cd? i would soooooooooooo buy it. this discussion went on elsewhere, and i stick to my opinion, the more the merrier. i'd rather have 10 bad songs more then miss out on one new Long Highway (did this on purpose, for my good friend dmg)
I want a 4track release
telegraph tunnel planet sultans from on the night
I can pay any sum
And you can add, Why Worry,Portobello Belle, Fade to Black, So far away &The Long Highway from 1991, I Think I Love You Too Much & Setting me Up from 1992 US Tour, Iron Hand from Paris 1992.
Then a bonus CD with alternate live version of R&J, Heavy Fuel, YourLatest Trick form the 1991 leg, full uncut version of MFN and WOL (although only for completist collection for the latter one) and new mixe of "OES" with a greater sound difference during the "middle quiet sequence".
-

I wish you are right, but if MK sticks to his routine, and release in september of this year, its needed that the musicians are booked already, as they are very busy musicians. Unless MK decided to go on improvisation, and call whatever the musician is available instead the ones he wants.
Other chance is that they are booked to come and play at the end of the year, and they release the cd in spring 2015 (like with GH and ATRR) and go on tour one or two months later, which seems unlikely to me.
Unless you have other information, in which case, contact me in private, please ;D

Mark has extensively worked the last couple of years so let give him some time to breath. 2015 would have been logical but 2016 would not be that long (Gilmour fan have to wait way longer between solo tour ;D)
Now that Mark is his own boss, nobody to tell him "call the band, take your favourite guitar, put your amp on and play and record your bloody songs like if your were performing them in a small sweaty London club. Do it five day a week for two weeks, then select the best takes, mix them in three days and put that fuckin' record out and go on the road with it".
Instead this is more of "which of my 200 Martins&Co will sounds best on that song for these next two chords? Guy come on we will have a long experimenting day today!"

Good summary of the situation.
-
Of course, we are not pushing MK to hurry with this (but... better sooner than later, LOL), we are only expeculating with dates, with the little info we have. Of course the cd will be out when its out, and same with the tour, but, we should talk about something in the meantime ;D
-
I don't really see why the tour dates always have to be the same every year. It might be nice to have a change. Also, why does he have to wait for the two Mc's to get themselves together? Just do an album without them for a change or use other musicians. Does he actually write songs with them in mind now or what! I think getting his own studio has meant the recording process has become a much slower and more relaxed affair for Mark. I get the impression it's like he gets the lads around, they have a wee play and sing-a-long, then go for a pint. Doesn't sound very professional and even, dare I say it, like they're not taking it serious.
-

But still - I think he has a pretty heavy regime and a very tough worker's men mentality, when it comes to studio work. Nothing to say about a pint after a hard day's work (when you like it)

Of course we are to discuss and share opinions.

The usual timing is typically Mark's wish.
This originate from the exhausting 85/86 tour and for OES Mark asked the management "to follow the sun". Of course doing a world tour panned over a 13 month period is not that easy to respect but from 1996 onward this has been established as a trademark, touring from spring to early summer then the important for him family summer holiday and not stay away from home for too long period.
You have to be Bob Dylan to make him accept to go on the road for a rainy fall tour by bus or be short record promotion run (and the more the years goes the less promotion for them Mark tend to do).
Mark at 70 being his own boss, has control over almost everything he can control and is in its comfort zone without record company or management interference about what he's recording or timing.
The main concern for him seem to keep on filling the venues where he plays. Europe is still pretty good but USA (at least some part of) seem to be more difficult.

I think EC sounds much older than Mark, certainly on his recent albums. Privateering appealed to me much more than Old Sock.

Right, I should have mentioned "live" as I haven't listened to Eric's recent studio album.

Yeah, Mark sounds about 90 live these days! Bob seems about 20 years younger on the stage and yet is unbelievably older!!! :disbelief
Just been listening to versions of WII for the other thread lately and I can't believe how much energy has dissipated from his performances since then. He can't even find enough breath to sing all the words these days! :lol

in 2013 saw mark play 6 times, also saw eric Clapton and chris rea at bluesfest
most enegery on stage was chris rea!, dancing and spinning around ,and amost tripping of a guitar lead, and voice good as well
think claptons voice was the best out of the 3 and playing seems ok too,
but overall think knopflers concerts were the best out of the three, just that knopfler sound and his voice has never been great but goes with the music , think 2013 had way more energy than the 2010 concerts may of been due to his back in 2010

for studio version no (pensa-shur MK1), but for live 96 and 2001 yes
-
Btw, did you notice that there isn't the National in any of those pics?
yes, until now, two other albums does not feature the national (I mean Mark's one) :
the ragpicker's dream (although some steel slide by Richard on Old pigweed)
Get lucky
and for STP : not sure
maybe Junkie doll has the national played by Richard like on tour, but not sure, it could be a Richard's one

"Wine Red Raspberry Ripple Rogers"

Name all guitars is a piece of cake, but songs is a tough one. Especially when it comes to distinguish between ES-335 with different pickups and 1959 and 1958 Les Paul.
-
Considering "Get Lucky", I thought Richard plays the National on "Pulling Down The Ride"?
no, when Richard is playing slide (lap steel playing), like on pulling down the ride, he uses his own national triplate with a big square neck, the one he uses on :
- old pigweed
- in the heartland
- all that matters
...
Mark introduce this guitar saying "it has a really really big square neck, very hard to play" during 2005 tour for all that matters, and specially at Botthbay 2006
for stand up guy, it's not clear :
on the album booklet it's written Richard plays his "hawwaian national" on both ATM and SUG, and on MK news, Chuck ainlay provided infos saying that he plays Mark's national on SUG....
so difficult to say....
-

Can't really agree that it was worth the wait.
Nice pics but no real insights, no info on rumoured collaborations etc.
And the recording process appears to be following that of what is generally regarded to be his worst album ever...
-
Someone recently has mentioned a parody that Mark & Guy spend days/weeks checking which Martin will sound best on "the next two chords". That kind of epitomises what I dislike about the modern millionaire ex-rock star vibe.
I guess it really is retirement, in a sense, there's no pressure to pump out an album every year and therefore the artist can get comfy in the armchair and not push themselves.
Who can blame them? After Marks whole career why should he 'have' to bring us the cutting edge of Communique or Love Over Gold. He has earned the right to do what he wants, and that IS success.

Yes LE I agree about abreviations, and I try most of the time to not use them, but sometimes whan I have 2 longs song titles in the same sentence, I admit I succumb to the temptation... :-\
I don't understand dusty's comment either, if it's about Privateering I find it a little bit harsh, but of course it's all matter of taste :)

No problem, JF, I must admit that I used to use them myself, and of course it is Stand Up Guy, could have checked it, it was not so difficult after all...
after several cups of coffee it suddenly struck me that Dusty of course means Kill To Get Crimson, because the process of work is pretty much the same... working all alone with Guy in the studio, taking a long time to dive into the songs etc...
Right? ;D

for stand up guy, it's not clear :
on the album booklet it's written Richard plays his "hawwaian national" on both ATM and SUG, and on MK news, Chuck ainlay provided infos saying that he plays Mark's national on SUG....
so difficult to say....
Ah, thanks! :thumbsup

About Guy's forum, I sent another question to him about 8 to 10 days ago.. (can't hardly remember what it was I asked ;D, something about him losing his interest in keeping his site updated and something like that, but friendly-written and with the adequate praise for the upcoming GF3). It seems he doesn't answer questions not with the same consistency than he used to. There were times when really EVERY question was posted. Nowadays it seems he chooses what fits best and ignores the rest. First time I got knowledge of this was when the secret US gig took place last October. To be fair to Guy, I got a personal message from him that explained to me why he couldn't comment on it.
Somehow it seems there is some change in PR work. Maybe Mark has enough of the constant diary stuff following his work. And "just a lot of drinking of tea and chit chat punctuated with occasional flurries of activity" does not sound excactly like the big amount of work he was indicating in earlier comments, doesn't it?
I can live with it perfectly well as long as we have a great new album. All I want to say is why keeping the tension up with announcing something and not delivering it for three months and then coming up with stuff that could have come from recent diary entries just as well. guitars, desks, mics. Mics. guitars. Desks. Oh, and Mark!

I sent an answer for competition, but seems like it's almost impossible to be 100% correct (even for MK lol), although for 50% of songs there is a clues everywhere.

The diary entry says to me how naive were we thinking that the new cd will be out this year touring next...
It looks like they are in early stages yet, unless Guy provides with new (and valuable) information, my guess is cd out in 2015, tour on 2016.

Yes guys, I meant KTGC. :)

I still think we will see a new album this year. Somewhere in the fall. Probably October instead of the usual around September release. Remember Guy said something on his forum about some oppertunity comming in between they couldn't let pass by. Secondly he also states that they have locked themselves away.
"after another great stint on the road last summer, Mark and I resumed work in the studio a few months ago and started work on another album."
Besides that I think he keeps something secret from us for now about this recording. I think they have some very special guest(s) on it. Also this could be a very good sign it takes a bit longer. Usually first Mark and Guy work out and lay down the basic songs and later they add the band. Adding the band to the tracks doesn't take that much time. Mark works with very skilled musicians. It's often just a matter of a couple of weeks to add those tracks with the rest of the band. I have a feeling Mark wrote alot of material again from which they can work with.

I do really hope, that you're right. But my impression is that we will have to wait until the autumn of 2015....
-
Why would you think the new album will be released in 2015? To me it doesn't make sense. He is now in the studio working on the album. If you look back since 2000 he released every two years a new album. Except for the last one, but we got a double album from Mark to make up for that. :-)
To me it doesn't look like his kinda normal routine 2 year scedule, if he would release it in 2015. Writing songs in the fall, recording winter/early spring, mixing/mastering in spring time, summer manufacturing etc of the cds.. around fall album release. Then fall and winter promotion on tv and in magazines and beginning of spring tour.
Also Mark understands he is aging and that at some point his body won't let him do what his mind wants to do. Knowing Mark there is still so much he wants to put out there into the world. That album will be here in the fall! ;D
-
I agree with Guitarman. There's plenty of time yet to record an album - we're only just into March and it doesn't take long to record an album really. The EP back in '83 took only days to record!
There's also the possibility that they could go on the road as the album's being released. Why do they have to wait until the year after release? In '91 they were on the road before the OES album was even released! Same for BIA I think. What a load of panic merchants! ::)
-
For an autumn 2014 release the album has to be mixed/comped/completed in May 2014. There are these inevitable months between completing the recording and its final release... Now we have March and the band has not even been at BG...
So maybe it will be an semi-acoustic album, and the band has just some minor jobs to do.. a three week stint and everything is ready because Guy and Mark pre-worked so well... The schedule is tight nevertheless and I am also sceptical in matters of an autumn release this year...
Maybe Mark breaks the routine (once more) like he did with Emmylou or Golden Heart and plans a spring 2015 release. That again would mean no tour start in March/April 2015 but later... or it will be just a small tour...
Or mark really takes his time. Doing two, three, four, more band sessions, guest musicians etc. and really will release the album when it's ready - autumn 2015...
It is quite thrilling isn't it...

May 2014 completion isn't impossible (probably) but why so long to release? What about a summer release?

Don't panic :disbelief
The man just moved to Universal.
That means Universal wants a record as soon as possible and I have no doubt MK wants to show his loyalty.
Moreover, Guy is obviously too busy to update his diary section. That's a very good sign: they are under pressure. ;D
-
Personally I reckon MK already has the songs/tunes as he stated at Bridport he already has a backlog of many songs. I am going very strongly for a summer/Autumn release with a tour next year!
That's what I'm hoping for as I want to do as many shows as possible for my 40th Birthday year!!!!!!!! ;) :wave

That only applies for the US, he is with Universal since they "eat" Mercury, long ago.

Guy is being misterious about when the band will come to record. After he said that next diarie entry will be when band comes to town, i asked him if there are any date for this, and he didnt answer at all.
I wonder why all that mistery about it...
-
Have been reading the most recent posts in this topic. Well....., it sure would be nice if Mark & band are planning on releasing a new album somewhere in the summer/fall, or maybe early 2015.
If all this mysterious stuff Guy is coming up with means they are working on something new, that would be very good news. :)
Have a good friday all (it's almost weekend everyone :)),

I've just read the answers of the guitars competition.
Guy mentions songs we don't know, probably left from previous albums.
Mark Knopfler Signature Stratocaster: When I'm on my own
Grosh Electrajet: Bonfire Night
Gibson ES330: When It's over
and one we alreday know, 1954 Fender Stratocaster : Two skinny kids
Now that Guy mentioned these songs, may we dare ask him from what recording sessions they are ?
-
According to the competion list Glenn Saggers may have spilled some beans regarding upcoming titles! (Two skinny kids, finally, YAY!)
MK Recording Diary February 2014
COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED
Thanks to all who entered this tricky competition. The winner was Jarle Larsen from Norway who gave the first correct answer. SO many of you were incredibly close which shows you really know your MK guitars. Personally, I thought it would be impossible.
Here is the official list from Glenn Saggers
1964 Fender Stratocaster: Sailing to Philadelphia
1954 Fender Stratocaster:Heart full of holes/Fish and the bird/Punish the monkey/Behind with the rent/Let it all go/We can get wild/Remembrance day/The car was the one/I used to could/A quality shoe/Two skinny kids/Everybody pays/Summer of love/Shangri-la.
Mark Knopfler Signature Stratocaster: When I'm on my own/Redbud tree/Occupation blues.
Pensa MK 'D': Not on anything released, only recorded live on Kingdom of Gold. (I accepted Kingdom of Gold as the correct answer)
Grosh Electrajet: Bonfire Night/Yon two crows/Piper to the end.
Gibson ES330: Madam Geneva's/Behind with the rent/When It's over. (the precise year of this guitar is unknown as it has no serial number)
1959 Gibson ES 335: Baloney again/One more matinee/Wag the Dog.
1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard: The scaffolders wife/Let's see you.
1958 Gibson Les Paul Standard: So far from the Clyde/Before gas and Tv/Cleaning my gun/You can't beat the house/Remembrance day/Dream of the drowned submariner/Yon two crows/Follow the ribbon/Today is OK/Hot or what/Why aye man/You don't know your born/Speedway at Nazareth/5:15am/Back to Tupelo/Whoop de do/The trawlerman's song.
Gretsch 6120: In the sky/Punish the Monkey/The fizzy and the still/Hard shoulder/Yon two crows/Seattle.
-
And :clap to Jarle, congrats!
-
I am no gear-head at all so I was not interested that much in Guy's competition. But what I know is that those new song titles have the typical MK flair and that they give me goosebumps alone by reading them... :D

It's somewhat obvious that 'Two Skinny Kids' may be up for the next solo album or perhaps a Everly brothers tribute since the passing of Phil :think

Someone called Larry Elder saId that he recorded not only the master sessions but also the concert itself where MK played with many country artists, including a duet with John Anderson in "When it comes to you" and "Two skinny kids", but that recording of the concert never saw the light of day :(

You all know these two little creatures that sometimes sit on your shoulder, that little angel on the right and the little black devil on the left, talking to you? I had the imagination of Guy Fletcher today, in both variations...
The bad Guy was arrogantly saying to Glen Saggers, ah, give them the list, I have this boring competition for the get-a-lifers and really don't feel for working it out, Glen was on the spot providing the list, and Guy posted it without even looking at it... you can probably imagine what will happen to Glen in THIS dark world...
On the other hand, we have the bright friendly world, and the Good Guy was thinking, those poor fans had to wait for three months now for this diary entry, I will give them something for compensation...
;D ;D
Really, I have no idea how this could happen.. Do you think Guy does not even care about which songs have been released (as bonus tracks) and which not..?
LE
-
Now more seriously, I listened to Two Skinny Kids on YouTube first time since years, and it is really so touching. The idea that MK came back to this after the Phil Everly died has something sad and is so typical MK. It is obvious that now it was the time to do it once more, properly.
Do you think this song will be recorded with pedal steel, therefore with the magic Paul Franklin again? Would so love to hear him again on an MK album..
It will be interesting to hear it from the new album and compare it with the old version - remember Secondary Waltz, there was not much resemblance with the first "Golden Demo"... I would love to hear it the same style as on the YouTube version.. with undoubtedly better vocals of course...
And talking about Paul Franklin, the track name "Bonfire Night" let's my imagination go off for a new On Every Street...
LE
-
Btw, Bonfire Night is now deleted from the list
-
yeah, wanted to post that in the same minute. Strange enough, the other three songs are still there, whatever that means..

Me too! It also made me think how Mark has managed to reduce the number of guitars he takes on the road with him. The red Strat reissue takes centre stage now and covers many bases, replacing a lot of guitars including the '54 Sunburst he used to take on the road for OSL and SFA. Most of the guitars he takes on the road now are pretty new (aforementioned Strat, Don Grosh and the Pensa's) except the Les Pauls.
-
I wonder if that song titles are from new songs (or songs for the next record) or songs left out of previous records...

Whenever a song sounds like a DS song would sound, its left out, too much fun.

I think the only reason why Bonfire Night would be deleted -- and the other three still remaining -- is that Bonfire Night indeed is a new song, contrary to the other three older ones.

Get Lucky as well with the one recorded at full volume in the boot. Each album has left over, some are reused later some others never.
-
Right! About re-use - let's hope so!
LE
-
And some appear partially in other songs. Do you remember the "making movies" song that got split up and the riff became the Expresso love riff while some of the lyrics ended up (as inspiration only and completely changed) as part of Skateaway. And Ironhand that appeared almost 8 years after it was written. We can still hope for that elusive riff from the DS era that could have been Money for nothing no.2! (although I really like this as an example and not as a reality. After all how many songs about Money can MK record, It's money that matters, No money at all...)

Hi again, would you say the production of the new MK album is still in its early stages? Or - the other way around - is an autmn 2014 release still possible?

The best thing to honour this legacy would be Mark accepting to dig out all these hidden treasures and provide the old and new fans with the best source.
There are tons of stuff in the closet.

great find, looks like him yes

I think we can assume that the new album has also alot of celtic influences. I really hoped for a more American Heartland sounding album, with country and bluegrass influences. My two favourite albums are On Every Street and Sailing To "Philly".. Would be nice if Jerry Douglas appears as guest on the album again. I absolutely love the sound of his weissenborn lapsteel and dobro.
Anyway, i think I am gonna check out the Transatlantic Sessions DVDs.

MK reads this for sure. Every name we would like him to play with goes to his black list and calls other people that have nothing to do with our desires...

Clapton: Bruce who?
Knopfler: Exactly

How are you so sure? Think Mark isn't that interested in scrolling through forums tom read what the fans of his music think or hear the latest news about himself. I assume he'd be rather racing his wonderful Maserati, spending time with his lovely wife and keeping his company running properly. I have a strong feeling that Mark as employer feels very responsible for the people around him. You can make that up from his interviews and songs. He understands that people are in some way depended on him to get by financially. That the people have to make ends meet every month. And that he rather have as much people being part in the making other people happy business (entertaining industry) then in the making other people miserable business (militairy industry).
Besides that, Mark has his music "idols/inspirators" too. Hank Marvin, Chet Atkins, etc. I am sure that if Mark would know about Bela Fleck that he probably would be pleased to work with him. Or atleast interested. Personally i think they would connect very well musically as well as persons. For a musician it would be crazy to have a blacklist based on what fans would like. As a musician you need the skills of others too to get your music to a higher level and a new dimension. Mark is surrounded by the best of the best throughout the years. So why not Bela? I'm sure his sound and his strong melodic qualities would be very pleasant addition and variation to Mark his arrangements/songs. Mark knows like no other how important it is to change instruments and musicians. Or else every songs would start to sound about the same.
-
Oh no...Another McCusker-McGoldrick feat. Mark Knopfler record...
Yep, a slide guitar album featuring Sonny Landreth, Jerry Douglas, Derek Trucks, Bela Fleck, Paul Franklin etc. would be nicer, but hey we can't have everything in life, hey? But we can surely dream about it! :D
On the other hand nothing wrong with musicians like McGoldrick...

Ruth Moody again :)
And it seems they have quite a lot of songs ready now?
Still some questions... Will there be another band session for more songs? Or is it waiting for some overdubs, then mixing and releasing?
-
Nigel Hitchcock was there too...
I understand they are comping, recording overdubs and at the same time recording more songs, so I guess this is far for being ready to release.
-

Is there a difference between comping and mixing?
-
I would say comping means choosing the best results from different and many recordings - takes - and taking the best ones. For example Mark can sing his vocal part several times and the final choice then is built, combined, - or comped - from these recordings... (I remember some discussion some years ago that you could clearly hear on the the track "The Ragpicker's Dream" where the different vocal parts were ... I listened a dozen times but was not able to make out where the differences were.. ;D) So different guitar parts, different drum parts and so on, listening to them in a row the whole day (which is what they did obviously on the famous Ragpicker diary picture on the London roof in the sun, you remember) - taking final decisions, discussing...
mixing then is purely a question of mixing the final tracks together, volume, fades, dynamics and stuff.
Any better explanations welcome! :wave

Anybody know about Mr Molsky's guitar work? I've never heard him, nor of him. After so many years of the trusty Dick Bennett in the line up, I cannot picture a new face on Mark's left side. Ianto replacing DC didn't seem to bother me as much as this one does. Maybe we're just creatures of habit and got too used to seeing "one big family" on the stage...I sure hope Dick is back soon.
-
Mr. Molsky playing on the album does not automatically mean him playing in the live band, too. Remember Richard was also not playing on Kill To Get Crimson but was in the band later nevertheless. Although I find it strange also not to see Richard in the band, after all those years...
Sometimes it could come from the Musician himself. We all think MK is the big Muso boss. But it is also quite exhausting to do these tours with him. Maybe Richard just said "leave me out the next time please, I need some time to refresh" The same with Danny, maybe he even recommended Ian as the best drummer of the UK...
LE
-
I hope that Richard will be part of the tour / or other recording sessions. And this answer on Guy's forum gives hope. Seems that Mark is doing the most guitar related stuff. It's not a replacement of Richard. I guess that Mr Molsky is more into fiddle and banjo.
Q: Richard Bennett is not in the pics, and his blogs writes about other recordings at the moment. Who is the new guitar player?
A: A guy called Mark
-
A Chris Whitten quote from other thread posted by Dusty comes to mind, when Whitten said Paul Franklin was very worried about all the recording sessions he was missing while touring with Dire Straits...
Obviously Mk tours are not so demanding, but its also several months of missing recording sessions for all the American musicians, specially Richard Bennett. Maybe he was just busy to take some time recording in London, maybe Mk decided to record all guitars by himself again (as with Ktgc), but I'd say Richard will be back on tour, as its planned such in advance that he can schedule all his Nashville sessions and not miss too much work.
-
It's also interesting that Jim isn't there -- so Guy must be playing all the keyboard parts by himself. Just another similarity to KTGC, isn't it?
-
Guy didn't give away any info on why there was only one band session of just one week given that they started work on the new album back in September. For me the absence of Jim is a far bigger question than the absence of Richard since Mark repeatedly praised Jim while one tour: "always new all the time". The whole new album project is still one big mystery to me and things have not been any clearer after the second diary entry.
-
That's right, we have only a few informations what's going on all the time.
But I'm now 100% convinced that it's not hard rock or metal, rap, hip hop and house ;D
@wayaman: the '92 tour was something else, nowadays we're talking about a few months and Richard has already done it severall times. So i doubt that missing recording sessions is the reason... We'll see. Curious!
-

LE
yes that's it
coming is "compiling" different takes to make the final one. Of course you can't hear the edits, otherwise it would mean they had been in a bad way !
David Gilmour uses this technique for almost all his guitar solos : what you hear in the final mix is a "compilation" of different takes.
He records several takes, and then on the mixing desk, he switches from one to another, choosing the best part of each take
-
That video of the Thomas Dolby session demonstrated comping pretty well.
-
Hello!
Do you know if this album will be the first without Chuck Ainlay after so many years? :hmm I cannot find him in the diary and if you look to the old recording sessions he is always present on the band sessions.
-
@ CarrionSpy
It can't be. I think there is more chances for a solo album with MK and a guitar only rather than MK working without Chuck. He's The Boss!
-
Do you know if this album will be the first without Chuck Ainlay after so many years?
Chuck might not be at the helmet doing the recording and co-producing at the moment, but I think at a certain point Mark will call in Chuck to do the final mix. After that it probably goes to Bob Ludwig again for the mastering. Though I wish this time the mastering engineer is conservative with the compression. The amount of compression these days on Mark's albums are horrible. I reallly wish one day the real dynamics come back. Sonically the early Dire Straits albums are such joy to listen too. Listening to overcompressed albums can be very tiring.
-
Actually Guy said right in the diary that it was him in the control room for this particular recording session.
-
I recall a video of a presentation of something at British Grove, and Chuck was there, at the same time that Mk was working on his songs.
-
I think MK has become more and more predictable.. It worked well with Ruth on a couple of songs previously, lets bring her in again, seemingly the same with Nigel, was the same with Mike Mc a few years back..Chances are we will then get much of the same sound we have been used to over the last couple of years and nothing that stands out as very new and exciting (regardless of Molsky which fits well into MKs current line-up and sound).

Not so sure, JF. I remember another, not-MK-related video on youtube some months ago where Chuck was at some presentation or something. We all thought hey, Chuck is there, it was later than October 2013, work on the new album had already begun then. Cannot find it.

That i can understand but i wonder what is the reason why he will not post my question....

A simple answer would have done it....
-
Cannibals, i think Guy just doesn't know. On his website he also mentioned that there are no plans for a tour at the moment. Besides that Richard has probably his own projects going right now and might have declined a request by Mark to take part in the recording of a new MK album. Anyway, does it really matter? Mark is always able to surround himself with top musicians. For me it is mainly about his songwriting, vocals, guitarstyle and sound. With Mark that will always be the same.
Personally, i actually like a change in the line up from time to time. New blood means often new/fresh ideas and sound. Have a big dream (wish) though. A MK slide guitar album, with guests like Sonny Landreth, Jerry Douglas, Derek Trucks, Bela Fleck, Ry Cooder, Chris Rea, Jeff Beck, Paul Franklin (box)... even though that will never happen.. the dream is still beautiful. :-)
By the way guys and gals ever heard of Nelly Niel (aka Andrew Niel):

I doubt that Bruce Molskey would replace Richard on tour. It seems like Bruce's role is more like Tim O'Brien, a multi-instrumentalist who specializes in American folk music and plays strictly acoustic guitar, along with the other stringed things. MK may be playing all electric guitars on the new album, especially if they are recording in separate tracks, rather than live, in which case Richard's participation is not necessary. But Richard, or someone with his playing ability, would be necessary when performing live. Richard plays guitar in a way that is very complimentary to Mark's playing, in terms of tone and style. I can't imagine that he would be replaced by an accoustic specialist.
-
I guess you are right. What I find interesting, maybe strange and quite alarming is a second fiddle... only reason for this is Mike playing flute and John cittern... I mean there is a violin in the band with John McCusker...
I have a certain "Speedway Of Nazareth" expectation when I read about Molsky's roots in Americana..

Regarding the release date - does anyone think that the delayed release of Privateering in the US will affect the release date of this new project? The new label just released an MK double album in Sept '13 - will they want to wait more than a year to release a new title?
For what it's worth, I am quite certain that MK will never discuss in public any dispute with a record company. But a couple of the songs on Privateeing seem to give some insight into his thoughts. The lyrics to "Don't forget your hat" sound a lot like the expression from the American south "Don't let the door hit you on the way out" which is said when you are glad to be rid of someone you don't like. The rest of the lyrics support that thought. That sentiment could apply to a record company executive with whom you are having a dispute. Also the song Privateering, especially given that it is the title song, celebrates the idea of being your own boss or the captain of your little ship, as Mark has said before.
Anyway, sorry to get off topic. But as much as I hope this new album is released in the fall, I wonder if the delayed US release of the last album could have an effect on this album's release, regardless of whether it is technically complete or not, simply for marketing reasons. I guess it would depend on how big his US market is vs the rest of the world.
-
guess ROW sales are more important to Mark then pure US sales. just guessing here though..
-
Does anyone remember the name of the "multi-instrumentalist" that was to tour with MK during the ill-fated Ragpicker's Dream tour? He had a bio on MKNews for a while. Kind of a flaky-looking character,IMO. Can't remember his name though.

Next question.
LE
-
I was assuming the new album wouldn't be out till next year but Guy answered - "could be" to the question posed of album coming out this year and tour next year.......... hopefully!!
-
If you read between the lines in some of Guy's answers you can for sure say there will be a new tour in 2015. I think the new album will come a little later than we are used to from MK. Perhaps somwhere at the end of of this year.... :wave
-
The album could come out next year and the tour immediately following it's release. Similar to the old days (although BIA/OES tours started before the albums were released so audiences only knew the first single).
Or, I don't see the big delay in completion of the album in the studio and release date. Isn't this just usually to arrange artwork and to wait for a suitable release time to get best sales? If it's finished at the right time and they're already working on artwork anyway then just get it out there! No reason for waiting months.
-
Guy suggested that they are still working, and summer holydays are around the corner, I dont think the work is completed before.
-
Back in 2007 I asked Guy about this mysterious 5 to 6 months gap between mixing and releasing an album, he passed that question on to PC, and here is what he answered:
That's a very good question, one for Paul Crockford, Mark's manager. Here's his reply - In answer to your fan question the delay is in order to get the record out to long lead time press and the rest of the media with plenty of time for them to consider the record for reviews and TV and radio play. In addition the manufacturing and distribution for a worldwide simultaneous release takes some considerable length of time to co-ordinate in order to make sure that the record gets into every market on the day of release.
My guess is that we might have a spring 2015 release like with Golden Heart or All The Road Running - releasing in March maybe. The tour dates could be announced earlier nevertheless. I am not sure 100 % but we had the case of buying tickets without knowing the actual promoted record, hadn't we? I remember
RAH tickets to be announced VERY early last time, or was it 2010... So concert dates announcment Oct/Nov, release in March, presale starts March, too, tour starts end of April and Bob's your uncle...
I would prefer a Oct/Nov 2014 release however. It all goes off from our lifetime, you know..
LE
-
How it happened with "All the roadrunning"? I recall the cd came out in around march 2006 and the tour started late april, but can recall when the tour dates were announced.
Gh dates were announced before but it was in early internet times so most of us knew about them when buying the cd as the dates were in the jewel case, and the tour started very close to the release date too.

As it is all so awfully quiet (and hot) these days, I thought why not listen to this again - with the view of maybe having a "proper" studio recording of it on the new album with much better vocals nowadays... I love this song, just listened to it three or four times in a row... although the sound quality is pretty bad (is there a better version available?).. but it was everything that reminds me so much of all my favourite MK ingredients.. those pedal steel, these drums... a little bit Long Highway flavour.. love it!
Hope Guy will come up with some news sooner or later...

Seriously, I think it's perhaps due to the imminent Transatlantic Sessions.
-
It means that Guy is busy.
-
I'm searching for ideas what it could mean that it will soon be almost a year since Mark and Guy started work in the studio and that there have been relatively few band sessions (even only one?) accompanying that work. Guy just stated that he and Mark would finish up alone after returning to the sudio in September. Unless we have been left in the dark concerning more band visits to BG, can we expect a very stripped down almost accoustic sounding record? Could that also explain the absence of Richard and Chuck?
-
i wouldn't mind a more acoustic album...as long as guitar is clearly on it.

True, Dutchessy.
And he makes it completely sound as a pure technical process. Fair enough, as he engineered it completely, but I guess 80 % of the diary readers are looking for something different when awaiting the latest content.
I wrote it earlier that, for my impression, Guy was extremely reluctant, low-key, very reserved when it came to speaking about the recording and album.
I wonder if I only was not allowed to or if he really and honestly utters what he feels like - just a another job to do, no surprises to expect, let's concentrate on the wonderland of British Grove when the material is the usual stuff...
I understand the "touching" sentence from Bob Ludwig as a judgement of the "recording work", not of the work itself.

Strangely, I can't find Tracker Studio Diary 3, except from the above link! Have I missed something, somewhere? :hmm
EDIT: Problem solved! I changed 2 to 3 in the web address! :thumbsup

Its not linked in the diary page yet so I assume is just a draft.

Guy has removed the content, anybody happened to copy whatever was on there?
-
Lol you shouldn't be there! Guy's sense of humour is priceless.
-
So greetings to the good Doc if he reads THIS! :wave

Technically he could be told by Dan about anomal activity on unpublished diary page.

Something about "best sounding recording ever" then "best studio ever" followed by "best album ever." ;)

Basically it said that they sent the songs to Bob Ludwig to do the mastering and bob sent it back mastered with a note remarking how nice it sounded.
Also that it sounds so well because the clasp system that allow them to record on analogue tape and put it on a hard disk immediately and that he did the whole engineering of the new cd without Chuck help, assisted by the in house engineers of British grove to which he is very grateful.

I do love the pictures of the studio gear, especially those old 'Abbey Road' mixer faders :)
Nice pic of Mark & Glynn too.

Fletch, I thought the same and was thinking about the Privateering booklet - there the pictures were also shot by Guy. These new ones have the high quality to be put into the Tracker Booklet, too. Maybe we will see one or the other. Always hope for an inforamtive, nice and commented boolet. Loved the Shangri-La comments by Mark, same with Get Lucky. Relating to this, the Privateering one was, apart from the great pics, rather disappointing.
