MK's daughter has been fronting a campaign to get her Dad to perform at Glastonbury-possible DS reunion?

She only asks for Mark to perform not Dire Straits.
-
if you look for MK, you are linked to a preview of the article but also there it leads to nowhere.
-
For sure it is always astonishing when someone has the influence and power to make things undone.... :think
To me it says that it won't happen.
-
She removed her post from the Glasto chat facebook page afyer the press picked up her post. They are speaking about Knopflergate there.

Glaston Mud Festival?

Let us ask Guy about it ;D
-
I think it is good to read he has been asked twice but for whatever reasons he does not want to play over there. :think.
Too bad if you ask me.
-
I understand Mark standing on the matter.
I mean what would have been his point in disbanding Dire Straits and ending collaboration with Ed Bicknell?
In others words, Glasto would have been the perfect place for a DS music revival and this is exactly what Mark does not want.
We have been aware these later years that the only times Mark accepts to play the DS game is for private/corporate shows.

Just a question about this article in 2006. Is there any truth in this or absolutely not??

The interview is true. But when talking to "DS" he did not mention exactly "who" (and remember that DS has officially disbanded).
NME October 2008 :
"Illsley told BBC News that he had attempted to instigate a reunion, only to be rebuffed by his former bandmate.

The opportunity has passed but seeing Rod Stewart, John Fogarty, Neil Young and Burning Spear do their thing at Glastonbury on the TV at the weekend did again remind me that DS would have gone down well at this festival, certainly in current years where the acts are even more varied, straying into pop.
Never quite understood the MK logic here.

He didn’t need the money and the stress levels. Also his guitar skills were already deteriorating since the ’96 tour.
-
Yeah, I don't think Mark has plans to play live again even in solo.
Over 35 years since DS played live, and a lot of water has passed under the bridge.
It ain't ever going to happen - just accept it.
-
I never believed in Glastonbury but there was a chance for Live 8 in 2005. I remember Mark said in one of the interviews that they didn't play at that concert for unexplained reasons.
-
Mk is retired of playing live.

They were on their US leg of the 2005 Tour. July 1st was Boston. So probably schedule reasons.

Yes, that's true, but big concerts like Live Aid or Live 8 were planned long in advance.
-
I have zero expectations that DS would ever reform and play Glastonbury, or ever again for that matter.
I just think if history took a different path, it would have been a nice thing. That is underlined when you see artists of his era and age putting on a good show in the current day at Glastonbury.
-
They could mime to backing tracks, though. Or do an avatar version, like ABBA.

Indeed, he is never going to play live again. I bet with the Local Hero project he could have done it on a tv show or something like that. But he let Guy do some interviews. I also think we will not see him that often in public anymore. Perhaps a interview at BG at the best..

On second thought, no.
Mark's guitar skills have deteriorated so much that he would have had trouble miming the guitar parts.
Plus he would look really silly wearing a headband now. If he could have found one that fits, that is.

never read that..
maybe they already had a stellar reunion and did not need another one?

Grudge, they knew there were scheduling conflicts, or they just didn't think about it. I mean, it's not like every band that broke up would think about reuniting for Live 8, no?
-
Eh, I'm pretty sure MK was already on tour at that point. In fact, I saw him at Radio City on 29th June 2005 and was still there when Live 8 was on. We had been on a Sopranos location tour and saw the Pink Floyd reunion on big screens in Times Square on our return.

yes. I will write an article on 13th for the 40th anniversary

My opinion is that anytime Mark would have wanted it, it would have happened.
Albeit nont promoted as it, 2002 was it.
-
Somewhere between the 1996 Tour and the 2001 Tour MK grew definitively too old and too boring to make me even WISH to see him again with DS anytime. The freshness, energy and drive was totally missing. And it got worse over the next couple of tours with the exception of 2013 where he seemed to have a (last) outburst of energy and motivation. To be honest, from 2000 on I HOPED he would never come up with a DS reunion. It would have destroyed the legend, totally.

-
I’m sorry to completely agree..
-
I recall this being a question to Dr Fletch who said the reason they didn’t play was simply they were not asked.
-
My opinion is that anytime Mark would have wanted it, it would have happened.
Other band members might have declined. Maybe Danny C would play drums, John on bass. Rhythm guitar, Alan Clarke?
So many different members over the last three tours (1980's to 1992).
-
If they had asked you, would have said yes, Chris? (I know, what if and so on). Just for one gig?

Mark and Alan? I doubt it :)

Probably not. In the end, everyone has moved on.

I think that if Mk reforms the band, he would take his nowadays drummer, Ian Thomas, with the band. Actually the only important members of the band would be MK and John, plus Alan and Guy as veterans in the band.
-
I think Alan has burned bridges.
-
i think Alan IS a burned bridge
much like Jon Carin in the Gilmour camp.
-
I think Alan has burned bridges.
Maybe Alan lied, but he said that before start recording his solo piano record he talked with MK about it and kind of gets his thumbs up, as long as most of the songs he recorded where MK songs.

It's money that matters ;)

I'm sure Mark didn't care enough to handicap the release. How many did Alan sell?
-

Yeah! Sure!
I was joking when I cited Randy Newman song.
I bet that the "all good" from MK was from his management.
"We spoke" was, at max, a whatsapp message or a brief 'hi, there' over the phone.
I think that Alan felt himself lost when MK stopped to work with him and got closer to Guy. Maybe he tried to get back to EC's band and receive a 'NO'. I don´t know... just guessing. Or simply he got tired of touring and big artists.
Alan, a trully great musician.
-
Alan fan?
-
Alan fan?
The musician Alan?
A fan... not really. I admire his work.
Alan have great skills and, above it, his tone and his chord voicings are top notch.
Great musician.
-
Agreed, great musician and very important to the later DS years. However I think he probably annoyed Mark and John over recent years and I couldn't see him being absorbed back into the fold.
-
I think if DS would have reunited at some point, around STP time 2000 would be ideal! A final onetime concert? Sure live 8 2005 would be cool! After that i feel MK became too old to really do the whole ds thing! My dream lineup for a final show in 2005 would be MK ofc, John, Guy, Alan, Pick, Hal, Chris! Love Alan Clark's work! Tho he seems to be problematic over the years! A shame really his work on Love Over Gold my favourite album is wonderful! When i see the lineup of festivals this year i get really sad, thinking about how music have fallen off! I mean Charli XCX with her massive use of autotune is the biggest act in Glastonbury!
-
The 2002 charity shows were as close as possible to a reunion. Even though it wasn't on the official headline, yet to me, it still was NHB and DS up on that stage.
I mean, MK, JI, GF along with CW. Who else was missing in that lineup for it to not have been Dire Straits? :)

Yes, I was going to write the same thing :) Mark Knopfler and friends at 4 concerts. Danny Cummings was there too:)

From memory at the Beaulieu gig the 2nd half they were introduced as Dire Straits.
What an evening...

If only Brothers in Arms had been a little less successful ...
-
I don't think Pick would do it.
DC on drums, or Ian Thomas.

There was also a 1999 set at John's wedding, but a private event.
Mark, John, Alan, Guy and... Ed on drums. Ed... would love to hear how that one went down.

The July 24 and 25 concerts at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London were recorded, and we only know fragments. It's a shame the entire set wasn't released on the official album.
-
I think that Ed said that a DS reunion was never discussed or even mentioned.
Despite all 'bad things' that involves the Instituition RRHOF, in my opinion, I think that Mark, David, John, Guy and a drummer (Pick would not be there anyway) should have played, at least, one song.
I think that Ed said something like: They should have played together for the fans.
If Mark was there, someone would did a proper introduction. Not that self-something that the guys did.
Would no harm for anyone.

Of course. How could I forget! :smack
A very fond memory to have. One of the best shows ("Save the baby") I've been to.
-
The Hall Of Fame thing was indicative of where DS are currently at.
Some of the sidemen are more desperate to cling on to their Straits connections than Mark and John are.
-
After seeing the farewell show to Ozzy and Sabbath, i start to imagine what a Mk final show at St.James park would look like! Sam Fender as guest artist, Sting, Eric Clapton? Would been interesting if MK was even a bit more like he's contemporaries in rock, having a final show for the fans atleast like at RHOF! But MK left DS behind in 92 and have never looked back! On a second note its sad to see all the great rock bands vanishing one by one!
-
I never expected that Mark would do a farewell show - it's not in his nature. It was obvious to me that the 2019 tour was the final one. I knew that he would retire quietly from touring without any fanfare. I do, however, look forward to hearing more new songs and recordings in the future. :)
-
There would be at least four months of microphone testing, and three weeks of rehearsal just for that one show.
-
Probably a month of rehearsals.
Those epics like Telegraph Road and Tunnel Of Love are surprisingly complex to get right.

I personally wouldn't be surprised at how complex they are.
Speaking of which, Chris what do you think of Danny Cummings taking over from Chad Cromwell mid tour in 2005? The tour started on 28th Feb 2005, Chad played up to 21st March 2005, then Danny took over from 1st April 2005.
No idea how much advance warning Danny received, or how many actual rehearsals he got with the band, but still pretty damn impressive in my opinion, even if he did know the structure of a handful of some of the songs from the OES tour.
-
I think Ian Thomas is a better drummer. Danny is a world class percussionist, absolutely superb.
-

I agree, it was more a question of the prospect of joining a world tour with a relatively complicated set in the middle, would you take something like that on (not for MK, obviously! Say, I don't know, Peter Gabriel or Paul Simon asked?)
-
I did The The world tour at the end of 2024 with two days rehearsal (two-hour show).

The The. An excellent example of a band name chosen before Google was a thing. :)
