Notice that the YouTube link on the bottom leads to... TUNNEL OF LOVE. Seriously, that's the link:

What's happening? Apart from the mortgage of course :lol

Not that long! It wasn't like this a couple of weeks ago. It used to be linked directly to markknopfler.com

Very strange then. Could this have anything to do with the Hall of Fame in april :think

To me it would make sense that they create a DS site for information and stuff like that, now when DS are going to be inducted into the RRHF. What I think is going to be interesting now; are they going to do more out of it?
-
The site is new, and it states "Dire Straits - The Official website of Dire Straits". That's the first time ever, isn't it? That there has been an official website related to Dire Straits. Must mean something :)
-
It belongs to a brand management agency, that claims they works with Mark Knopfler and other big names.
For me is a shame, because they are asking for our personal data first, and they do in an unsecure web (no https). The web itself is full of nothing, very unprofessional IMHO. I don´t even think they have the rights to commerce with Dire Straits brand, just the Mark Knopfler one.
-
Guy now:
Q: "Hello Guy, just to your and our knowledge. Is this website any kind of official? They claim it is. Also, is not secured (https) when asking for people´s personal data."
A: "No, of course it's not. There is NO official DS band website as the band no longer exists, just the many tribute and fan sites. Be careful out there."
-

Yeah, probably direstraits.com domain is very cheap and of course was free to use by anybody :lol :lol :lol
With that said, the form is suspicious as it can be.

It's official, the information of the company that registered it it's the same that runs the official MK site:

Then why Guy is saying it is not official ??? ???
-
Then why Guy is saying it is not official ??? ???
Because Guy is a musician that works for MK as musician, producer and engineer, not the person who manage all aspects in MK career, that's Paul Crockford, his manager.
Is PC who did the contract with the company that runs the official MK site, that is the same that owns the DS site we are talking about.
-
It’s probably a way of making some money from the RRHOF. Their might be some minor interest in the band/MK when its broadcast in the States.

Guy's answer is now changed to only: "Checking".

Yes, after he checked the information that Alberto and I provided to Guy...

He just needed to do a very simple Whois lookup, it takes 1 second, like using Google
https://www.whois.com/whois/direstraits.com
-
I think it is nice that we can ask him, and he made an honest reply and listened to us :) How cool it will be if the ceremony and this domain can open the eyes and ears to new listeners, 26 years after the last DS tour.
Events the last weeks have made me realize I like this forum and MK waaaay too much to keep away :)
-
Interesting. It is now a form to sign up for some type of an email subscription list. We already know both sites are registered to the same company, and the confirmation email gives a Toronto address down in the fine print, as does MK.com if I am not mistaken.
-
Maybe MK will surprise us and will announce after the Hall of Fame introduction one final reunion tour. Why all of a sudden is there after all those years an official website ?? And if the site is run by the people of MK it would be pretty logical. Why shouldn´t Guy be so mysterious about all the recording sessions since the last tour. If you spend so much time in the studio for the "new album" and a musical which is going to run in 2019 there should be more.

You know better. The only thing that will happen is that DS perhaps will play a few songs at RRHOF.
And that is quite unique if that is the case after more then 25 years. You know long it takes for MK to make a new album. And do you have any idea how much work goes in making songs for a musical?
There is no more, i'm sure

Do you think that in this page we seen any uncut new proshot recordings?

Many!

Call me cynical but the only reason for this website can be for money-making purposes. Therefore I would wager that the so-called secret project has something to do with DS. Perhaps previously unreleased material is what they have been working on, and this website can be used for internet sales/promotion etc. I wouldn't get too excited about a reunion.

But maybe this is the only way for Mark to rejuvenate himself after "the best tour ever"? Maybe it actually is... Honestly any refresh will do.

Perhaps there will be some (new) stuff availible after the RRHOF event in april. Another greatest hits cd/dvd or perhaps they found a live concert from many years ago they dusted up a little bit. Count me in for a live recording from the BIA tour ;D

But we already know what the so-called secret project was...
-
We know what the secret project is - Local Hero! ::)
-
There must be some reason to have this DS website up and running suddenly after more than 25 years. But i would not expect to much of it. Like said here before, probably to make some money out off it in combination with the induction of the Hall of Fame. And if we get lucky perhaps a new live cd/dvd...
-
Registration Date: 1996-11-26
They have owned this site since 1996, zero exploitation, unbelievable at best
How many big bands have no website like dire straits ? zero ?
-
I seriously doubt that there's something special coming up. I really think it'll be news, pictures and probably a few videos about the RRHOF and that'll be it. We know Mark doesn't look back...
-
I don't expect any sort of reunion, but releasing old stuff would be great !
indeed, we know that Mark doesn't look back, and that there is no really chances for this, but this site and the RnRHoF give me some hope...

When was the last time something official came out from DS? Was that the Alchemy DVD?

Do you think that in this page we seen any uncut new proshot recordings?
are you serious?
i have a question(s) for you (serious):
how old are you?
where are you from?
when did you start to listen to MK/DS?
have you checked dimeadozen/spanish city and other torrent sites in the meantime?
your questions always seem a bit,...naive/funny. sorry if that is all due to language issues.
-
I think he said 16 from Argentina
-
Here in Russia we had a fan club called "Mark Knopfler & Dire Straits" with all the music and stuff... But after a while I decided to divide it in half into MK and DS separately. So maybe this website is merely for dividing the material, because right now there's a mess on Mark's website. It's Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler simultaneously. So you'd have DS discography, news, music, etc. on this website and MK's stuff on MK.com.

yes everything is in MK's site, really ridiculous, amateur as usual

Everytime there's a young newcomer they all get too hysteric. Same thing happened just the other year.
It's like they can't survive unless they get all the info they need in on the same day and the same with info going the opposite way.
Take a breath, search, read. Many around here had to go through years and years to get a whole lot of knowledge.
Did someone say 18+? ;D
-
We all know that MK did very little about letting "new" DS stuff on the market once the contract was over (ie after Live At The BBC).
But as the time is passing by he always can decide that after all this years he would not mind anymore about stuff being released regarding his old famous band.
I know I am currently dreaming but who knows?

Hello Pottel
I want to answer all your questions
Im 16 years old from Argentina; im a Dire straits fan about three years ago..
I already checked all torrent sites..
But, why did you get angry with me?
And why you ask me about if i checked the torrent sites?
PD: With "new proshot recordings" i refer to New and uncirculated recordings

We all were newcomers once. Can we try to be supportive instead of criticizing? An original purpose of this site was to share our knowledge and enthusiasm. When someone new comes along, we need to welcome that person, not make fun of his/her lack of knowledge. Some of us know a lot more about MK/Ds than others. That does not make us superior human beings. Think of how you would feel--or have felt--when someone put you down for your lack of knowledge when you were trying to learn. Be nice, please.

Point taken. Not trying to put anyone down or being superior but I'm merely acknowledging that it's a pattern and I stand by my opinion.

A few hints on Guys website that MK has not totally dismissed release of old material and also that the record company are aware of the shitty bootlegs currently filling the gap they could make money from on Amazon
-
From Guys website in relation to archive recordings:
"We are well aware of the demand for such recordings. I can tell you that this matter IS being discussed. The legacy of any band of this stature is naturally very important to record labels"
For what it's worth i'd be after:
Mandela 88
A full Live in 85/6 concert (London Dec 85 / NYC 85 / Sydney 86)
Something from the On Location Tour
OES tour outtakes
Demos and outtakes
All issued with a high quality vinyl release

Not aware any of the London December '85 gigs being recorded - July 10th yes, usually referred to as Wembley '85.
Never liked the Sydney show; tired performance, short ToL.
Must be enough from the OES tour to take up a dozen CD's if you include the Paris, Nîmes and Rotterdam shows. :P
Let's not forget the Madrid 2001 DVD and the other shows recorded for overdubs - Glasgow, Newcastle and Bilbao(?).
This site is only going to be worth it if they make available the "Holy Grail" bootlegs, some of which I've listed above. We already have most available pro-recorded performances. One wonders what is still surviving and what they can lay their hands on and then get rights to... :think
-
I know a lot of those shows I listed only exist in audience as we know of ; but I'm sure there are more soundboard recordings we don't know about or have access to. Paris 83 and the OES outtakes for example
-

It'd be good to know if there actually are any gems we don't know of though. I have my doubts that this site will reveal very much except for better quality than we already have; nothing new.
Maybe I'm getting old (and I am) but growing up in the days of videotapes I could've lived perfectly well with the old MFN video. That sort of thing doesn't interest me - it's new material I crave.
-
Yes : new / unearthed material for me too. Being honest id never even watched the MFN video in full before I saw the improved version on YouTube
-
It seems like Springsteen and E-Street recorded every show they done back in the day. We get a constant flow of archive material from them on Nugs.net
Can only hope DS done similar and we don't know about it (yet).
-
The official site has been launched, further than that mailing list form, it's very little content by now, but it's a start!
More sections to follow.

I'm curious about this website, though. Why now? So late? Who is the initiator? John?
The DS site has been hijacked many years ago and the people who run the MK official site did their best to legally recover the domain and use it to represent the band, but as they were busy with the last MK tour and other stuff (they run the official sites of many many many other artists as well) they didn't had time to start it. The site has been just with the mailing list form for many many times, waiting to do something else. Now the site started, just with the shop, but will have many other sections soon.
Yes, it's late, but better late than never!

I'm thinking more about the whole idea behind it. Surely Mark doesn't care, as far as we know, but since Mark and John are Dire Straits on paper, Mark must have given his approval. Could there be a financial motive on John's part?

Mark may not care about DS, but surely he cares about the money :lol
But seriously, it was strange that brand like DS doesn't have a website, nowadays even mediocre bloggers like myself have a website, and if you're selfish enough... Some bloggers even sell their own merchandise, but Dire Straits? One of the biggest bands in the world? Surely this is a move in the right direction, I'm looking forward to when Mark will realise there's was hardly any proper live shows released in the last decade or more :lol
Sometimes the lack of something is so obvious that you don't need to be Albert Einstein to see it...

The site, and associated PR campaign on social media is in my view instigated by the record company / rights owner; i.e the entity which will benefit from increased streaming or downloads from digital content. It's all about tyring to generate revenue from the back catalogue, and remind people it is there.

Sounds credible. Can any of this happen without a go-ahead from Mark and John, though?
-
The site isn't made to generate revenues for the artist, at least, initially. The idea behind it, is to generate enough money to be self-sustainable. Management pays money to this company to maintain social media representation, but sales in those sites will maintain and improve the content of that web. And the content there, will be on behalf of the fan, because they are trying to listen to the fan base. And it has management and Mark's approval.

Thanks, Binone, for the details.
The last sentence says it all. Mark cares about DS and I didn`t expect anything else from him.

For anyone interested.
Took six days to deliver. The Alchemy beanie was very comfy. From the description I thought it might be too tight fitting as most beanies are nowadays and I have a large head (giggity).
Both store and beanie get good ratings from me. :thumbsup

Great that they are fast and selling quality stuff!!!!
The site has now also a discography section, looks like it's growing slowly.
-
They are adding things to the site... The timeline is quite cool with some very nice pictures on it, the discography section also looks well, with at least the info available on the sleeve records.
-
Discography section got a nice update with the singles section, with mention to b sides "Eastbound train", "Badges, Posters...", "Millionaire Blues" and "Kingdom come" with links to the streaming versions of them!
I think is nice that they are included as discography, not only the "long plays".

I ordered a beanie and t-shirt and they arrived very quickly.
The hat fits nicely.
The t-shirt(L) is absolutely huge and is more like an XXL!
-
In the discography, they included a small "Did you know" section inside each record...
Nice little detail.
-
There is information about Walk Of Life, no information about Private Dancer (Love Over Gold) ;)
My little thought :)

For me it's strange that they never listed who plays piano on the first DS album. According to Pick Withers, it was Mark.

Really? It wouldn't surprise me though since piano parts are extremely basic. I guess Mark Knopfler — guitars, vocals and PIANO would look strange to them :lol

It is not strange at all that Mark is playing the piano.

it could also have been David as he learned piano during his childhood, and he plays piano on Portobello Belle on the Barbarella concert
and he is credited "keyboards" on the live at BBC (although I think it's a typo here)
it could also have been Muff Winwood
organ part during In the gallery chorus
and some little piano notes on Wild west end (intro and "chinatown" line)

Are they any good, I read comments on here that it was €20 chinese crap from Amazon. I’m tempted but might have missed one by now.

I have replicas of 20 euros of the National, the Pensa, the Les Paul, the Martin, the Stratocaster and the Gibson and honestly, the Gibson replica that MK.COM made is ALMOST PERFECT in comparation with my Gibson of 20 euros from ebay.
The cheap one looked ok to me, but when I put both together, the 20 euros one looks like crap, and the MK.COM replica looks so perfect that there is no comparation to made here.
It's expensive, but it is excelent.

They set up differents "warehouses" to send the orders depending from where you are ordering, to avoid customs fees to us.
