Hi all,
I got contacted by management about this upcoming London event:
We have just launched a short running competition for UK fans you may have seen announced.
https://www.instagram.com/p/DJt1lsix6Bg/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
Unfortunately as with the Q&A for Mark’s album, it is run by the UK label so we are unable to open it up officially internationally, however we still wanted to offer a couple of spots to international AMIT'ers who can make it over. We have 4 spaces total. As per last time, attendees will be responsible for their own transport and accommodation.
Session 1 - 15:40 doors / start time of 16:00 - 17:45 approx - 2 x spaces
Session 2 - 18:40 doors / start time of 19:00 - 20:45 approx - 2 x spaces
Location: Highgate, North London
Please let me know if you are interested, and can make it for sure (this is important because of very limited spaces to give away!)
We will draw names at the end of weekend (or let management draw names) so it's NOT first come first serve
Also you need to be an AMIT member who has posted before
-
We are available for the first session! Mr and Mrs Knopflerfan...
-
Me and my son are available for any of them
-
I will ask my sister and an uncle..
LE
-
My wife and I could go to either of those sessions.
-
We could go to either.
-
So far i have a reaction of 6 AMIT fans. Unfortunately I have just 4 spaces.
I want to know if it's 100% sure you are going to make it, and it's 1 ticket each so no wife or son i'm afraid, we want to make as many amit fans happy (4 forum members instead of 2)
Who is still interested with these conditions?

Not for me then.......

I am 100% sure I can go to either event.
I can go by myself or with a companion (if I’ve understood your message correctly.)

Just fair. I’ll withdraw as it would include my son, who’s isn’t a Amit member. Only condition: the goers would has to report back on the event for the rest of us :wave
-
Thanks for the offer, I'd like to go but I have an important appointment that day that I can't change. Hope some of you might get a spot there!
-
Same, I'm happy to go on my own.
-
I would like to go to first session only one ticket would be needed. Thanks
-
I wouldn’t normally consider applying for this sort of thing but as a teacher, this date happens to fall in my half term holiday. Thrilled at the potential chance to go.
Thanks for this opportunity

As part of the email I’ve received with details, I’ve been given the chance to put questions forward to be answered.
I can’t think of anything particularly I want answered. Is there anything particularly you guys suggest? I could try and post the gist of their answer succinctly.

Maybe if they had access to other material, live, demos, alternative takes to had made a biggest box than the one released, to expanded it more.
-
Will there be other Box Sets or Jubilee Boxes referring to Mark's solo career and if so, are there the tapes of Vaison 1996 available which is by far the best solo Show of MK...

My question would be, if they are (still) in contact with Neil Dorfsman these days concerning the promo of the 40th anniversary of Neil's probably most famous production. And if they are how Neil views the album musically from a 40-year-distance.

I agree. Vaison is fantastic.
For example, Water of Love is wonderful.
-
Not sure if they would select it, but maybe ask John how he felt about NOT playing on a couple of tracks...

Yes I wondered about this one.
Thanks guys. Truth be told, I love MK, I love his music and I’m very excited about this event but in some ways, it is wasted on me.
I’ve only seen MK and co live 5 times (once per tour since 2008) only own one edition of anything I do own, an am certainly not in a position to be comparing different versions of the same song on different nights of a tour! I actually don’t even know what atmos is……
So most of you will be much better to come up with questions than me!
-
I hope to see some pics and feedback from todays happening! :D :wave It is nice that they do events like this one, even if it is not for me as I know too little about this. Not least is it nice that John Illsley is involved :)

Hopefully the q&a will on youtube later on just like last year with Marks listening party

Yes-I suspect it might be like that. Have had very little other info other than location. Wonder if there’ll be refreshments…..

My question would be: When you're remixing, and hear one of the musicians make an obvious mistake on the recording, do you alter it, suppress the sound for a moment or just leave the mistake in the remix?
-
Hi, all. Went to the early session as someone pulled out. Incredibly grateful to have been offered a place and managed to attend.
The studio was in leafy North London with doors opening 20 mins before the event started. I was struck by how small the guest list was, probably 18 to 20 people including a couple of familiar faces as well a couple of younger signed musical artists and people associated with the label and studio.
There were four rows of seats and I sat at the front. Having just come from a work meeting it maybe looked like I was more of a label person than a fan. The room itself was surrounded by visual screens, with some really comfy looking chair to the left of me. No speakers to be seen, they were all embedded.
The studio manager welcomed us all then Paul Sexton kicked off events and we watched the Under the Volcano segment as an intro. Then John and Guy entered the room and sat right in front of me so I had a great spot. Paul ran through some familiar questions about the making of the album but was great to hear John and Guy talk in such a relaxed way. The conversation was interspersed with atmos extracts from the album. BIA was first up and the thunder in the intro sounded incredible. Then Mans Too Strong some more conversation and then into So Far Away and Your Latest Trick. The mix on the latter sounded really immersive, incredible in fact.
The second part of the event was focussed on San Antonio. RATR went down really well indeed. Guy confirmed that there were no fixes or edits on SA, and commented how powerful and good he thought the toms sounded on the drums. The reason Houston wasn't used was due only to the fact the audience mics didn't record properly and Guy wanted the ambience. What was really interesting is that I truly believe the band don't really have much of an idea what was recorded during the tour and what wasn't, they were just focussed on the job.
I was pleased that Paul Sexton asked a couple of questions I put forward (sorry they wanted them at short notice so had to think on my feet without reading this thread first). I asked about the process of mixing San Antonio and whether Guy found it more creative than the atmos mix of the album. He said he did and that had really enjoyed mixing the album which was setup at his home then finished at BG. Also asked a question about how the songs evolved from Mews house to album. John said he enjoyed playing them in the round, interesting guy that there was maybe one song that didn't make the album but he didn't go further than that. Also that one song had to be re-recorded due to digital tape failure. The question about whether there would be any more releases didn't fare so well...."where are the tapes" coming up again, but John spoke about the Old Waldorf concert and having been given acetates of the show or radio show only lps post broadcast.
At the end of the event I managed to say hello to John.. proper nice bloke who said it was like hearing the album again for the first time...that was a nice moment. Guy seemed busy with another person and I had to leave but I did want to say thanks. They clearly make time for the fans (even ones dressed for work) and that was very impressive.
Got a cupcake on the way out. The event was filmed I think so watch out for some clips at the very least. Couldn't take many photos, sorry.

On the train back from the second event. Can only echo the words previously submitted. My experience was identical, even sitting on the front row.
I counted 23 people there. So very privileged to be there. I think most were management, or from a record label, or worked on the project somewhere along the line. I sat next to someone who said he was involved with the Blu-Ray element of the project. He asked me if I was a journalist. I had to reply with “no just a fan.”
I hung round for a bit. Guy and John went to another room but did come back out fairly soon. They did, after all, know a lot of people there. Didn’t say hi to either of them properly but said hi to Guy in passing and thanked him as we were leaving at the same time.
I leave at with an unfortunate memory of the event though……someone walked out with my coat which was clearly similar to theirs.
-
Sorry to hear about your coat

Sorry to hear about your coat
Ah thanks. I left my contact details with the staff. Thankfully it wasn’t a long walk back to the tube station, neither was it particularly cold.
Wasn’t the sound in that room terrific?

It really was. Finally feel like I've got to hear what atmos should really sound like.

Glad you guys enjoyed it!

the visitor, MagicElliott Thank you for the report :)

Well the good news is that I just checked when I saw your message and it was me that has your coat, I had to leave quickly and run like crazy to get the last train home from Paddington I didn't even put it on just put it over my arm and as you suggest it was quite similar to my own!
Can you DM me and we''ll get this sorted out! Really sorry for the inconvenience.

The wrong coat-a good title for an MK song right?

I want to thank everyone who co-ordinated the fans on this forum being able to attend such a wonderful event last night, I went to the second one and I very surprised at how intimate the event was. I spoke briefly to a very pleasant chap who was responsible for managing the Universal Music archive (what a job!) as well as some other industry representatives there. I had to leave very quickly (with the wrong coat...) so didn't get much chance to hang around at the end but did manage to say thanks to Guy Fletcher and shake his hand when they left the main room at the end.
The sound system in there was tuned to perfection and I've not had the chance to listen to "reference level" Atmos music before. It was not loud in any way but warm and emotional to listen to. If I recall correctly they played tracks including Brothers In Arms, Your Latest Trick, Money for Nothing, Walk of Life, Ride Across the River and The Man's Too Strong and they all sounded wonderful.
There is not much for me to add in terms of the Q&A, but I recall John and Guy telling a couple of anecdotal stories that they found it difficult to keep up with Mark's mind in terms of his musical talent over the years, also that Mark always wanted Guy bring a keyboard (Synclavier?!) with him on the tours which often broke down and was a bit of a nightmare!
Again it was a fantastic event and thanks to everyone here as well as the events and label management team that extended the invite to fans of this forum.
Truly special.

The Wrong Coat sounds like a perfect track for his next album - how do we make that happen!?

I will thank the management again for this opportunity on behalf of you and all AMIT'ers.

Yes- a bit selfish of me perhaps calling it a happy ending! Sorry!
Do they still have your coat there?

Please do. Paul Crockford was there, as was Robyn Becker. But didn’t speak to either-wouldn’t have known what to say!

Haha no worries - was only joking. It's my own fault for not checking the coat properly and again sorry it has caused you some inconvenience.
I've called them and they have it safe. I just have to make another trip to London now though!! Do you think they'll let me sit on the sofas and listen to the whole album from start to finish!? :)
-
Thanks to everyone for reporting us of this event. :thumbsup

Thank you for doing this and thank you for managing this here on the forum now for the BIA40 and last year for the ODR event.
We could only have dreamt about such an opportunity in former times.

Don't forget your hat. Or your coat.

Oh gosh those sofas looked very comfy indeed. I actually helped clear the room and put chairs away after the event.

Hello mates
I'm very happy for all of you attending this event, I wish I would had been able to go, hope to see you next time :)

I spoke briefly to a very pleasant chap who was responsible for managing the Universal Music archive (what a job!)
I don’t suppose the archive manager told you anything interesting, like if any DS material was lost in the 2008 Universal fire for instance?
After all the talk on this forum of “where are the tapes”, it's funny that you ended up chatting with “the chap with the tapes”! (Possibly, maybe, hopefully)
