They did play together in the classic French and Saunders skit, and they did a sort of jam at the end, not quite what we are talking about here, but close. At first thought, their styles don't seem to work together, however, when Gilmour plays the Blues, it is similar to Eric Clapton, and he plays with Mark, so I could see where it would work, certainly they could play acoustically together. I would much prefer Mark to play with Mike Oldfield, they have more in common musically, but that's just wishful thinking on my part.

Both Gilmour and Oldfied are experimental types. A lot more philosophical perspective on things. I really don't see Mark fitting in with any of them musically.

But for example, in reviews of The Division Bell album, the name Dire Straits sometimes appears.

yes, for "coming back to life"

and what a song that is!!!

Early Oldfield maybe, but he is more like Mark in lots of ways, he released a Celtic album called Voyager in 1996 which includes several musicians Mark has played with, plus he is a highly accomplished fingerpicker, with his own style, and also started in folk clubs like Mark. Also, both Ian Thomas and Matt Rollings have played with Mike too.

we know. but i think it is not impposible for him to still do so, and vice versa.
both went to each others' shows/studios. so there is obvious mutual respect.
any Knopfler, Floyd or Dylan will do....
