Songs you don't want to hear during the GL tour?
« on: April 17, 2010, 02:54:42 PM »
Hi all,

I know this topic is a bit delicate - I know tastes differ and Mark plays what HE wants, but anyway here's my list of stinkers  ;)

Hmm, well, Song for Sonny Liston isn't one of my fav. songs but until now it didn't show up. :)

I'm glad the chance is almost zero I have to sit and listen to: Les boys, Twisting by the pool, Calling elvis and Private investigations. Sorry, but I really don't like these songs. ;D Go ahead, shoot me. :lol

Song for Sonny Liston
Done with Bonaparte
So Far Away
Donegan's gone
Walk of Life

And Shangri-La: I am done with that one too.

I'm definitely with Localhero1986 - Twisting By The Pool is such a corny song. Curiously though, I like Les Boys. Actually, I don't think there's another DS song I'd add to the list.
No accounting for taste, of course, but So Far Away and Walk of Life? Classics! Sorry!

In addition, here's my list:
Sonny Liston, Monteleone, You Can't Beat The House, Daddy's Gone To Knoxville, Punish The Monkey, Pyroman, No Can Do, Baloney Again...

...and most of the Roadrunning stuff - it's all a bit too wishy-washy for me.

Songs I don't want to hear never again and where there is a certain potential that they might be played (again):

Rudiger
Done With Bonaparte
All That Matters
Song For Sonny Liston
So Far Away
Our Shangri-La
What It Is
Monteleone

Already dead, but I also will never want to listen to them again:

Walk Of Life
Money For Nothing

Not too much in my opinion?

Walk Of Life  :disbelief
Money For Nothing  :disbelief

Sorry, but I can't stand them anymore, despite the tasty guitar in MFN. A local radio station plays MFN a lot  -I don't get it. He has got such a broad catalogue.
And she's sitting in her Lusso, in the early morning sun.

I will never understand the constant selection of several songs over the vast (and vastly superior) catalog that MK has. At least SFA and WOL were big hits for DS back in the day, even if I've heard them enough. Donegan's Gone is up there with my least favorite songs by MK--yes, it's a nice tribute to Lonnie, but not worthy of the constant repetition and I don't think it ever sounds all that great. Boneparte is a great song, but wasn't a hit whatsoever. They do a great rendition of it and it showcases the players but there must be something else with appeal. I guess Song For Sonny Liston is destined to show up since they rehearsed it standing up and it's bluesy. Another one I don't understand, as it's been done to excess already. Guy had a post a while back to the effect that MK had said he would not do a similar setlist to the KTGC tour again. Apparently he had a change of heart!  :D

I'm not really complaining tho, just noting my preferences. Looking forward to whatever they play, just hoping for a little different setlist than so far (away)....

Keep Knopflerin'   ;)

Walk Of Life (too much heard)
Cannibals (maybe the only MK song I hate)
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Definitely MFN, Donnegan, Sonny, WOL, Elvis, Bug, The House, Monteleone, most of the Ragpickers Dream, 'most' of On Every Street, Private Investigations

It really is  a shame he doesn't play what the audience 'really' wants to hear and more of a shame that he plays one or two that have not stood the test of time. I don't know of any other bands that would take that attitude - apart from Ritchie Blackmore.

Yes, I see what you mean, but he continues to sell out concerts, and at least in my country you can hear his songs on the radio every day. I don't care what he plays as long as he plays. Art isn't about democracy IMO, but about integrity. But I absolutely see your point.

My view? I don't want to hear Walk of life, but otherwise I want to hear whatever he wants to play. MFN would be fun to hear again. It's a cool pop song with the best guitar riff ever. I guess that's the song the majority of the audience want to hear.

It is interesting that it is thought of as 'art' - which in some respect is true - i.e. it is a piece of work that has been created by someone. However when we go to see him perform live the 'artist' becomes the 'entertainer' and we want to be entertained. Otherwise we can stay at home and listen to his 'artwork' as long as we like.

There is also the predictability element now that has crept in to his sets. For example, What it is, played very early in the set followed by STP. Then there is R&J/SOS, predictably in the middle of the set and TR/BIA towards the final third.

If MK wants to surprise us, it would really surprise me if we had to wait for one of those old DS songs as an encore.
