OH MERCY is an album I play quite often. Perhaps I could have done without "Disease of Conceit" but songs like "Most Of the Time" and "Shooting Star" just hit me every time. Some dislike Lanois's soundscape approach to the producer's role but he caught Dylan's vocal delivery well and, as someone said earlier, there are some terrific out-take songs. And the alternate takes of some of the songs are really good as well. I have never really warmed to UNDER THE RED SKY.The nursery rhyme imagery doesn't put me off and neither does the basic r'n'b sound (it is a nice contrast to its predecessor, perhaps a deliberate step away by Dylan) but I can't really say that there is one song that gets to me like the songs on OH MERCY. The only one that I find myself humming in quiet periods is "Born In Time" but, as a piece of songwriting, that belongs to an earlier period,as has been stated already.

under the red sky rules, imho...

Pottel you are a devoted fan, your opinion is a bit biased. And anyway, we give too much credit to the critics when we say that they are to blame for poor sales or bad public opinion. I have seen albums skyrocket, regardless of the terrible beating from the critics. imnsho ( ;) ) a record sometimes has to be more than good. It has to be at the same wavelength with the world. Think of how much recorded music is out there. And it would be new to newcomers that listen to it for the first time. Only the date on the record would tip them off. In order for something new to sell, it has to have more qualities than good.
Come on, it is not funny anymore.

I played OH MERCY again today, plus some of the session tracks on TELL-TALE SIGNS. Some terrific songs there.

When I first got the video promo of "Series of Dreams" (1991), which I got from a musicbiz contact, it had the whole thing including the full credits. I noticed, at the end, a very long number. Even though it had no spaces in it, it looked like it started with a Los Angleles area code. So, as I was very impressed with the promo (clearly put together by a Dylan fan, I waited a few hours to allow for the time zone difference and called the number. It was indeed the video production company and the guy told me about filming the very brief sequence with Dylan in New York. When I aksed about the rest, he told me it had actually been done by a guy in Dublin and gave me the number. It now being very late here, I called Dublin the next day and it was another video organization, this time part of the U2 set-up. Charlie, the guy in question, was off sick but, some days later, we got to talk about the how the video was put together, which was very interesting.

Later that year, my wife and I went to Dublin for the DS concerts at The Point. Charlie had invited me to call in advance the next time I was due to visit Dublin, so I did. Charlie picked us up from our hotel and took us on a tour of the city (with Lightning Hopkins cassettes in the car) and then to lunch in the restaurant at The Point. Mark and the band were nowhere to be seen but Christie Moore walked right by our table, as we sat there.

We also got to blag our way into the press reception for the ON EVERY STREET album (again no DS members around) but the (very dubious) point of this story is to provide another, if rather far-fetched, link between Mr Bob and Mark.

I am SO loving to read these posts from you lucky people who can attend the concerts.   It's fun to know what's going on from back here in California.   Keep it up! :-*

And so loving to read from you, IrisRose.
But a spoonful of forgiveness
Goes a long, long way
And we all should do our best
To get along

I will help carry on.  But I need to find the exactly songs that MK played on some Italian shows.  So just wait for recordings to confirm.

Yes, I do very much like "Series of Dreams". There are several different versions in circulation, some arising from editing/mixing decisions at Sony that may, in fact, have been errors.

Trying to Get to Heaven sounded really nice with Mark, he played the Red Strat, not sure if it was one of the signature Strats or the other red guitar some said he's been playing. I look forward to hearing it again. I saw my friend Romeo there so I know at least the Dylan part of the evening was well recorded.

Tonight was a night in which I didn't have tickets but I decided to go down the Apollo around 9, during the switch over to see if I could find a real cheap ticket. In the end I found a young man heading in late who asked ME if I needed a ticket :D so he let me have it for 20 pounds which was all I had with me. I got in just in time to see Bob and Mark take the stage.

Tomorrow I will be in for the whole show, really looking forward to seeing Mark and Co.
