Dylans Another Self Portrait
« on: August 30, 2013, 12:49:09 PM »
Picked this up today (worldwide release was today I think?) and I'm on my second time round listening.

Really love the whole official bootleg series, but especially the stuff that concentrates on the outtakes/alternate versions. The acoustic demos Bob lays down are disarmingly non-commercial and beautiful to listen to collected like this. Some nice out of time and tune guitar playing peppered throughout, played by David Bromberg.

I bet Mark has these CDs today too, he's a fan !  ;)
Hey, i`ve got a truffle dog - finally a song the ordinary man can relate too!

Just got the vinyl box set. A peculiar thing with the various different CD editions. It seems as though that you have to buy the deluxe CD edition to have all the material. And it is pretty pricy! It is the bootleg series "Tell tales..." all over again. A real shame.
Come on, it is not funny anymore.

If you were buying  the deluxe edition book 3CD, it would cost you nearly 90 Euros.  There was also a vinyl edition (with less material) (70 Euros)  a 2 CD edition and a single CD edition. Each one had less material than the complete 3 CD edition, and completely annihilated the purpose of the series. It was not just a compilation. And we have the same thing with this one. Thank God they don't sell a single CD edition this time.
Come on, it is not funny anymore.

The budget way of buying is to buy the 2 cd basic version, and then if you choose, purchase the Isle Of Wight concert on iTunes. No deluxe $$ required!

Still really enjoying this bootleg, fantastic songs, great singing and vibes!! :) highly recommend, to Bob appreciates.

Oh Fletch you are a healthy listener.  ;D I have the collecting disease, and I think that Pottel has it as well.  :-\  Dylan, Knopfler and Pink Floyd as he states!    8)  If money wasn't an issue I would have every little edition from them as well. It has to do with the edition. The book/box/etc that comes with it. I have stopped buying all the bands I was following and liked since the beginning of the crisis, except Knopfler, Darren Hayman, Belle and Sebastian and Dylan (I missed the Pink Floyd boxes that have come out.  :'( ) But it is not the music contained, but also the format. It is about collecting.
Come on, it is not funny anymore.

I hear you VG, those big fat books are very alluring! :) I started a thread at ER a few days back reminiscing about the first official Bob bootleg boxset back in 91ish.. The boxset was a relatively new concept back in those days, it was certainly my first time *blush* and also my major induction to the world of Bob.

By the way, fans of a marvelous clean Fender blues sound will love George Harrisons tone on the song Working On A Guru (from Another Self Portait), at least I do ! :)

And when the time comes to sell them to pay for the rent, it is quite   :'( . Anyways, my first introduction to Dylan was in 1989-1990 when a girl at my high school gave me three tapes to listen. It was Oh, Mercy, Blonde on blonde, and The freewheelin'. It was love at first listen. Still my favourite Dylan albums, together with John Wesley Harding, Blood on the tracks and Slow train Coming. Yes, there are at least another 5-6 albums that come close.  ;D  My first box was biograph. Do you know it?

Talking of Blind Willie McTell, I downloaded The Best of Blind Blake last night from iTunes.  Includes Rope Stretchin' Blues prior to being "severely Hillbillied!"  Great stuff!
