Tres Hombres - ZZ Top
« on: September 29, 2013, 11:02:29 AM »
For any MK fans who aren't aquatinted with this classic album I want to give you my personal thumbs up (money back if not satisfied*) approval.

Such GREAT grooves on all songs. MK guitar players will dig playing along finger style to Waiting For The Bus, the tones are awesome - some of the very first pinch harmonics ala MFN. And all very tastefully done.

My tracks of (instant joy) choice, Waiting For The Bus, Jesus Just Left Chicago, La Grange, Hot Blue Righteous, Sheik...

Ok I've had my say. :)
I LOVE this album, please get it, crack a beer and enjoy.

*money back only honoured in Antarctica...

Strange that you should mention ZZTop Fletch. For the past couple of weeks I have been listening to all their albums! (I haven't bought their last one, because since 1990ies their records were below average. But their 5-6 first albums and many tracks from the rest until the 90ies are just fantastic! And tres hombres is really a classic. I also like their first one (brown sugar and just got back from baby's are dynamite) and Fandango, (mostly because this was their first record I heard some 20 years ago.)
And if you are looking for a real nice budget  compilation avoid all but "Rancho Texicano". All the rest focus on easier, although fan, songs from their career. Also "One foot in the blues" does the trick, although it lacks many of their later hits, mainly because it is a blues compilation.
Come on, it is not funny anymore.

I have fandango, which is cool, but I need to get Tejas and the other one.. Demuchomexicano (??? I forget its name ) :)
I've never been a blues nutter but Zz rock in an MK kind of cool way.

If you are going for the original albums, one that is packed with great songs (at least 5-6 of my favourite ZZtop songs included) is Deguello. It is the in between record from the electric blues of the 70ies to the multi million sellers Eliminator and Afterburner. And since it has elements from both periods and great tunes, it is a must listen.

BTW, are you still buying vinyl? Many ZZtop records that have gone gold or platinum can be found in veru good condition (and of course they sound so good) with a couple of $.
Come on, it is not funny anymore.

tres hombres is my favourite ZZTop album.

I played la grange at my wedding  :)

Fletch, are you sure that Billy is playing with fingers on Jesus ? you mean the rhythm part ?

BTW, he's playing with both pick and fingers on rhyhtm part of la grange (saw him on TV)

the pick was sometimes replaced by a peso, to get those harmonics

many forums says that La grange rhythm parts are played on a strat

indeed many other parts on the album sound strat :
- lead on jesus
- rhtyhm/lead on have you heard
...

and although Billy is mostly known as a gibson (LP, thunderbird, flying V) or gretsch custom guitar player, he played strat on many other studio songs (e.g. heard it on X), but never on stage

my all time favourite ZZtop track is blue jean blues on fandango. I read somewhere that it's Billy's les paul (named "pearly gates") plugged directly into the sounddesk.
one of the best blues tones I vere heard

I saw them live in 2011 (with paul personne as support act).
I need you tonight was great : the solo played only with left hand, all with hammer notes, while he was waving the crowd with the right hand !

edit : too much typo, had to correct them  :D

La grange in your wedding!  ;D
Well, I played "It's cheaper to keep her"... (true story, but I was on the safe side, because very few could understand, so more like an inside joke with my woman.

Come on, it is not funny anymore.

La grange in your wedding!  ;D

well, of course, it wasn't for the meaning !  ;D :smack

it was just a pretext for me to play some hard blues lead guitar  :P  8)

the singer didn't sing the lyrics, he just mumbled few word, he sung "yaourt" like we say in french.  :D

here were our sets :

1st set :

1- Sultans of swing
2 - New York avec toi (french band "telephone")
3 - long train runnin'
4 - un autre monde (idem)
5 - I shot the sheriff
6 - Johnny B Goode
7 - wish you were here

2nd set (not sure with the order):

1 - driven to tears
2 - little wing
3 - la bamba
4 - la grange
5 - sultans of swing

I only sung sultans, and some background vocals on some other songs.

we were 2 guitars, bass and drums...does it reminds a band ?  ;) ::)

and believe it or not, but the first sultans  we played contained a mistake : when I started the end solo, the other guitarist and the bassist begun to play the verse chords....until I made him a nod to rectify it.
on rockpalast, mark is doing the reverse : at the first solo (which is under verse chords) he start playing the end solo,
that's why they played it a 2nd time at the end "let's do it properly"

but all in all it ends with the same result.

So my wedding, was a litlle bit my rockpalast.... ;D 8)

;D Understand, even though due to my being a photographer, this is not an obstacle for me or my wife! Unfortunately I didn't have a band or played in my wedding. And I had no video either!
Come on, it is not funny anymore.

Yes. And I would add the tone on industrial disease too.
