You may guess the lead chorus lyric has a touch of Gravy Train, and I "tried" to solo in the style of 'If I had You' (from the Dire Straits EP)

Sorry for the singing !! Couldn't convince my band singer to take the song seriously

Thanks for listening, the tremolo guitars in the chorus, the whole thing really, sounds much better on headphones or a stereo. Unfortunately, most people get their first listen through a phone or tablet, and I don't know how to mix/make that sound 'good'. I guess that's what the people at British Grove do ?

I like your tone/playing on guitar, but also the sung/spoken vocals ala JJ Cale /Mark in early years

I listened with headphones, and the mix sounds great !


I work at TV, and we always pay attention to what will be the result on a small TV, on small speakers, etc...

I worked some years ago in studio, and engineers have different speakers to make their mix : the "good" ones, and the "bad" ones.
but you are right, nowadays, they should consider smartphones to !

I've a got a mates wife (who's quite a yummy mummy herself) keen to be in the vid, so I may re-do it with a bit more professionalism. Lots of fun, when you're in the mood.

We reshot the vid with a Supermodel (friends wife) and, importantly, got some real drums on the track, which makes a huge difference. Hope this embed link works !!

Edit - forgot to mention that one of my main aims (apart from trying to make a hit song like Clive James) was attempting to make the "sound" ok on phones & tablets, which is unfortunately how most people hear their first taste of anything. But also, it should sound super duper on headphones, cars and quality hifi systems too!
Sounding good on phones & tablets has always eluded me - I think the real drums, recorded in stereo via condensor microphones makes ALL the difference in getting that beat across.
So on a phone there`s almost no Bass, therefore half the beat vibe is gone

If any recording gurus (Ingo / JF / Dusty) have any tips i`m all ears!

For some reason I still like the first version better! But maybe because it was playing in my PC speakers for quite some time! It was sort of a new Badges, posters, t-shirts and I like it very much. Give some time to let the new version grow in me!

I just found now the time to listen to the 2nd version , and I agree with Vgonis, I prefer the 1st version.

the mimimal drum click fits more to the song IMHO, and the guitar sound/mix is more "relevant" in the 1st version. It has this JJ cale flavour, that I missed a bit in the 2nd version.

I agree with you though that real drums are most of a time better than a drum machine, but in this case, I prefer the machine 

there are some examples where a drum machine fits more than real drums. It can make a special ambiance like e.g. on in the air tonight (before the real drums comes in)

Another example : I like very much the instrumental on Golden demos (the melody that later ended up on behind with the rent) : a drum machine, some synths and  Mark's guitar, great atmopshere


as for mixing, I 'm not sure I'm  the right person to give advices.
My recordings were all made through the Tonelab ST (used as a soundcard), no amps no mics, even the drums were trigged ("real" drums, with real drumhead but trigged, with no acoustic sound).
And I use headphones for mixing.

As for playing on a phone, I'd say it depends very much on the headphones.
the iPhone has a very low level , and the headphones are quite bad IMO, so I changed for better headphones to get more bass,  more presence
